The rain was lighter now as the old man and makkot walked out of the hut. Jezz and mazxx stared at them indifferently. Hauled on the old man's back was a big black bag and cupped on makkot's hands was a big brown box.
" Hope the rain reduces fellas", said jezz.
Mazxx played with his boots.
The two human beings walked upwards, away from the hut.
" C'mon, is this how you guys behave here?", said makkot.
" This is the bat mockers hedge", said the old man. " This land is primarily for people of their types , I don't blame them much though. I only blame the government".
"Well, this is a really bad place, and bad government", said makkot.
" Nice war you put back in there", said the old man. " Thank you".
Makkot smiled. " You had earlier given me shelter so I was kinda repaying the favour".
The rain had made their clothes wet by now. " A really Strange government", said makkot. " I mean look at how the place is".
The old man nodded in the affirmative and remained silent, as if cogitating. Makkot also thought. I wish I could abandon this old man, I mean he'll be of less help to me, he thought.
" How do we find shelter, I'm soaking wet", voiced makkot.
The old man smiled. " Drop the box", he said.
Makkot complied and the old man bent down and brought from it a device that looked like a torchlight without lights. He clicked on a switch and boom!
A big umbrella cascaded out of it and spread out in the air, covering them.
Makkot was sincerely impressed. " Wow, you sure have a cool umbrella".
" Thanks, I have some tech stuffs. I do gadgets In my free time. They are many inside the box".
Makkot checked the box and saw that it was filled with many gadgets.
" Wow!", exclaimed makkot.
" What's your name?", the old man asked makkot.
" Makkot", came the reply.
" Well, I'm Devon", the old man said.
Devon!.
Makkot googled at the old man, hell!, the name sounded familiar. He couldn't really recall where he had heard it but it sounded a lot more familiar than he knew.
" Sounds familiar", he finally voiced out.
The old man laughed. " I'm not the only one bearing devon, there are many people with the name devon in this world for you to find it familiar".
Makkot shrugged. " True", he said " True".
They walked in silence, makkot holding the umbrella gadget. The area was empty and the rain made it kind of blurry for them to see. They passed a few trees and a few bat mockers cloaked in crimson clothes.
" I guess you'll not have much need of me", said Devon.
" I could if you're less busy," said makkot.
" Your tech skills and gadgets will be useful to me in finding the enchanter".
Devon eyed makkot and smiled. " Sure", he said. " I have nothing to do and nowhere to go so I think I'll use my later years in helping find the enchanter".
Makkot smiled. " But what did you use your early years for?".
" Working for the government of bat mockers hedge, I think that's the reason they're frustrating my life you know. I used to be a top worker for them, building tech gadgets for them and stuff. I was their top priority. I built great gadgets for them, really dope stuff but one day they sacked me for no reason and stole all my plans. It was unexpected, I had no money, they didn't pay me my salary. And so I built this hut and struggled to feed. And now…", he nodded his head remorsefully. " They've taken it and I'm left with nothing".
" So what do you plan to do?", asked makkot.
" Destroy the government", said devon in a gritty tune.
Makkot was quiet for long. He and this old man harbored the same thought - REVENGE!.
" Help me and I'll help you", makkot finally said. " While we are finding the enchanter, let's make the government pay".
Devon smiled. " Thanks, I also want to retrieve all my rare gadgets, they could really help us on our quest".
"Ok".
They had trekked a reasonable distance by now. A very far one. They suddenly heard the distant beat and the sound of beats. It sounded ebullient and makkot couldn't help but shake his head to the beat.
Devon eyed makkot and smiled. " Seems the bat mockers youth are having a rock party!", he lounded his voice. The sound was now nearer now and more booming. The rain fell in only light drops now. The sky rumbling as if angry that the rain was reducing.
" Let's go there and pass time", said makkot, also louding his voice
" An old man in a teens party?", said devon.
" Well, for the sake of PASSING TIME, let's go".
The sound of the beats became nearer as the two men walked towards it. Devon had clicked the umbrella out and had returned it to the box. Their footfalls were something near light as they trampled the sodden ground. They suddenly saw a large pit filled with teenage bat mockers, dancing and waving their hands in the air. Gyrations, shouting and making silly faces were the order of the party.
Some people strolled outside the place, chitchatting and having fun, cans and bottles of drinks on their hands. Makkot stared at the place, a hidden glee slowly crawling out of him.
Different weird looking cars were parked outside beside the pit. Makkot smiled, one of them were for the stealing. Devon read his mind by from the expression on his face and smiled.
" Thinking of stealing cars?", he asked makkot.
" You sure bet", came the reply.
Devon smiled. " Such a bad guy you are".
" In the underworld that we live in, I think it's kinda the order of the day".
" I sure miss earth", said devon.
" One day we'll be back there", said makkot.
With that they sauntered like some gangsters down to the party arena.
