Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: Culinary Mastery

"Hey, Shiyun, don't forget about the bet you owe me," Ye Feng said after finishing his meal. He couldn't help but remember the wager Lin Shiyun had made with him during their last test. Though Ye Feng hadn't even bothered to fill out the test paper, his earlier displays of skill had convinced her to concede defeat.

"What's the rush? After all, I'm already yours," Lin Shiyun teased, pausing in her task of tidying up the table. She leaned in close and planted a light kiss on Ye Feng's cheek. "Happy now?"

"Wow, wow, Ye Feng, must you flaunt your love so blatantly? I haven't even digested the last serving of dog food, and here you are feeding me another pound!" Fan Tong cried out dramatically, his tone dripping with mock bitterness.

"Just don't look, then," Hao Jian chimed in, his nonchalant response earning a laugh.

The afternoon test passed quickly, with Ye Feng turning in yet another blank paper. The teacher didn't even bother reprimanding him, but Lin Shiyun made sure to voice her complaints as they walked to the school gate.

"Ye Feng, can't you act like a proper student for once and stop handing in blank papers?" Lin Shiyun asked, holding his hand as they strolled.

"Sure, but what's in it for me? How about you keep me company tonight, and I'll promise to take the next test seriously," Ye Feng teased, a mischievous glint in his eye as he watched her pout.

"I'm not talking to you anymore," Lin Shiyun huffed, her cheeks turning a soft pink as she let go of his hand and looked away, knowing full well what he was hinting at.

"Why don't you give it a try?" Ye Feng chuckled, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and pulling her close with a firm but playful tug.

"Scoundrel," Lin Shiyun murmured, casting him a reproachful look. Yet she didn't push him away, instead leaning into his embrace, a small smile playing on her lips.

"Classmate Lin Shiyun, I have a friend hosting a private party at their villa this weekend. Would you like to come along?" Zuo Fei's voice broke through their moment, his frustration barely concealed as he addressed her while ignoring Ye Feng.

"Thank you, classmate Zuo Fei, but since it's your friend's party and we're not acquainted, I think I'll pass," Lin Shiyun replied politely, stepping out of Ye Feng's arms. Though her tone remained courteous, the disgust in her eyes was unmistakable.

"That's a shame," Zuo Fei said, his voice strained.

"If there's nothing else, we'll be on our way." Lin Shiyun didn't wait for a reply. Taking Ye Feng's hand, she turned and walked away, leaving Zuo Fei standing there, his face dark with suppressed anger.

"Young Master Zuo, isn't Lin Shiyun being a bit too disrespectful?" one of Zuo Fei's lackeys muttered, glancing nervously at his boss.

"Bitch," Zuo Fei spat through gritted teeth. His rage only grew as he watched Lin Shiyun and Ye Feng walking side by side.

"Young Master Zuo, what's wrong?" the lackey asked cautiously.

"That whore. I've been chasing her for so long, and she's never even glanced my way. Always acting so pure and aloof around me. And now, after just a few days with that punk, she's already sleeping with him? Living together, even? Damn it!" Zuo Fei growled, his fists clenched.

He prided himself on having countless women at his beck and call, yet Lin Shiyun's rejection had stoked a fire of humiliation in him. Watching her now, he was convinced she had given herself to Ye Feng.

"Young Master Zuo, are you sure about that?" the lackey asked hesitantly, unsure how much of Zuo Fei's assumptions were grounded in reality.

"If she's heartless, don't blame me for being ruthless," Zuo Fei said darkly, his eyes glinting with malice as he watched their retreating figures.

Unaware of Zuo Fei's malicious intentions, Ye Feng and Lin Shiyun made their way back to Ye Feng's villa.

Since Lin Shiyun had started spending her evenings there, Uncle Lin no longer had to deliver her meals every day—a change that delighted him but meant more work for Ye Feng.

"What's for dinner tonight?" Lin Shiyun asked, lounging on the sofa in a light summer dress as she watched a Korean drama.

"Should we eat out?" Ye Feng suggested, glancing at her.

"Why don't you cook?" Lin Shiyun replied with a sly smile, her tone sweet yet teasing. She still remembered the bowl of noodles Ye Feng had made before and was curious to see more of his culinary skills.

"Alright, let's go," Ye Feng said after a brief moment of thought.

"Go where?" Lin Shiyun asked, puzzled.

"To the market, of course. What do you think we'll eat tonight if we don't buy groceries? Air?" Ye Feng teased, laughing. The villa's kitchen was practically empty, save for some noodles and basic condiments.

"Idiot," Lin Shiyun muttered with a smile, standing up to follow him.

At the market, Lin Shiyun seemed to be on a mission, darting from stall to stall and piling their basket with vegetables, fish, and meat. Ye Feng, meanwhile, found himself loaded down with an ever-growing number of bags.

"Maybe I should never bring Shiyun to the market again," Ye Feng thought ruefully, glancing at the mountain of groceries in his arms.

"I think we've got enough for a month. Don't you think so?" Ye Feng finally said, exasperated.

"Alright," Lin Shiyun replied sheepishly, glancing at the bags in his hands. She hadn't realized how carried away she'd gotten—it was her first time at the market, after all.

"Let's go," Ye Feng said, leading her back to the villa.

"Should I help?" Lin Shiyun asked, stepping into the kitchen as Ye Feng began preparing dinner.

"Sure, you can chop the vegetables," Ye Feng said, eager to offload some of the work.

But he quickly regretted his decision. Lin Shiyun's chopping was nothing short of disastrous—uneven slices, jagged edges, and meat cut into wildly inconsistent pieces.

"Never mind, just go back to watching TV. I'll handle it," Ye Feng said, exasperated but amused. Asking someone like Lin Shiyun, whose delicate hands had likely never done housework, to chop vegetables was clearly too much.

"Fine," Lin Shiyun replied with a laugh, knowing her skills were lacking. She returned to the living room.

Before long, the kitchen was filled with the tantalizing aroma of Ye Feng's cooking. The mouthwatering scent wafted into the living room, making Lin Shiyun's stomach growl. Unable to resist, she rushed into the kitchen, eyes sparkling with anticipation.
