Chapter 1 - The Confusion’s spire

Dressed in a brown trench coat and a checkered Burberry scarf, Cain descended the stairs of his home, the 'Cain Manor'. The interior of the building has an elegant style, typical of the Victorian fashion. He took some evenly paced steps towards the door, made of a fine reddish-brown Mahogany. He stepped out and took a quick look at the grand building and its surrounding greenery, smiling as he did.

At both ends of the porch were two stone lions, mounted on foot-high pedestals. He walked towards one of them and stroked its head lightly. In response, the guardian lion winked and the doors of the building closed shut, the windows drawing together in unison. Suddenly, his face went grim. With a hand outstretched towards the night sky, he made a swift motion, swiping to the right with his fingers. Accordingly, the sky went from night to day and backwards, clearly indicating that the hands of time were turning. The manor and the compound soon faded away, the scene warping to one of a thousand or so people speaking a strange but common language and bustling around with various building materials and paraphernalia. At the center of all their hubbub was what appeared to be an incomplete but enormously large tower, The Tower of Babel.

Cain walked slowly through the people and their structures, passing through as a cloud of smoke would through a concrete wall. His presence was clearly not evident to them. It could be said that he was a mere apparition, a ghost from a distant time. Some 30-feet  ahead of him was a small tent, well made and textured with a smooth white cloth, its purity glazing brightly in the afternoon sun. This was characteristic of the lady he was searching for. He was glad to have found her with such ease, as she was known to be quite elusive.

He walked towards the tent quickly and entered it noiselessly. A beautiful lady with rich melanin skin and silky white hair, flowing beyond her knees and matching her pupils in their colour sat on a long white cushion. She wore a white gown with satin sleeves having tightly-fitted ends at the wrists. She snapped her fingers softly and a white stool appeared before Cain. "Master", she said softly. "My lady". Cain replied. "May I sit?" "Of course!" She replied courtly. He took his seat and smiled knowingly at her. "It's been a while light". "Well...six-hundred years is a rather long while..." she said listlessly. "I got your letter. It's evident you're still unhappy about my choices in the past" Cain said.

"And how well did they work out for you?" She said annoyed. "The only thing that will come out of isolation is misery. Shadow does not care for you Cain. His sole interest is his sadistic amusement. Why on earth can't you see that?"

"I built my manor in Kent, The Garden of England. It's a beautiful place Light. I'm far from miserable. If you ever wished to see me you knew where to find me, or at least how to summon me to this place and time without shadow's knowledge. But I'm certain you haven't asked me here for idle talk. Let's get to it then."

The lady Light sighed and massaged her temples expertly before she began; "The sons and daughters of Enoch, the "Enochian order", damned cultists, the whole lot of them are after you again. My intel tells me that they have a means to remove your curse long enough to end your life".

Cain furrowed his brow deeply when he spoke, "Your intel is wrong. That's not possible. First off, I've already disposed of that order. Secondly, the mark can only be removed by he who placed it there. Now if that's all, I'll be on my way."

He turned to exit the tent but she got up from her cushion and spoke loudly with great spirit.

"Only yourself, shadow and I know the true prophesy of revelation. Only we know that you are not the beast to be feared at the end of times. You are the one that will save the righteous from its clutches at the time of rapture, the exaction of your final penance to God. But they don't know that. How certain are you that you eliminated every single one of them?"  She paused momentarily and stared at him. "I asked you to see me here, away from Earth's time because they're already en route to your manor. You may be in real danger this time. I'm going to look for shadow and convince him to come back with me to help you. If my intel is correct you'll need full command of the mark if you're to survive this battle".

Suddenly, Cain got up and kicked the stool aside and walked towards her briskly.

"I'll be fine".

•The name "Confusion's Spire" relates to the Tower of Babel because, according to the biblical story in Genesis, God confused the languages of the people building the tower, causing them to be unable to understand one another. This act led to the dispersal of humanity across the earth and halted the construction of the tower. Thus, "Confusion's Spire" symbolizes the confusion of languages and the resulting scattering of people.
