Chapter 10 - The Barbarian Assault

The skies over the city were thick with ominous, swirling clouds as Deon made his way through the crowded streets. There was a sense of unease in the air—a tension that crackled like a storm waiting to break. It had been only a few days since he added the second Flame beast to his team, and he had been training relentlessly with his pets, preparing for whatever challenges lay ahead. But today, it seemed, trouble had found them first.

The sound of alarm bells suddenly rang out, piercing through the city's usual bustle. People around Deon began to panic, rushing towards shelter. He caught snippets of their terrified conversations—something about a Barbarian attack, a horde larger than any they had ever seen before. Deon's heart skipped a beat as he looked around for his team.

"Jolt, Zephyros, Vira!" he called out, and in a flash, his pets appeared by his side. Jolt crackled with lightning, Zephyros, his newly acquired air-type, hovered gracefully with its wings spread, and Vira, his healer, stood ready with her hands glowing with a soft, restorative light.

"What's happening, Deon?" Vira asked, her voice steady despite the chaos.

"It's the Barbarians," Deon replied, clenching his fists. "We need to get to the front lines and help defend the city."

Without another word, they rushed towards the city gates, where the sounds of battle were already echoing. As they approached, Deon spotted a familiar figure amidst the fray—Nyx, fighting off a group of Barbarians with his usual flair. His shadowy pet, Phantom, was a blur of motion, striking down enemies left and right. But what caught Deon's eye was the radiant figure beside Nyx, channeling powerful healing waves to the wounded soldiers.

"That's Nyx's healer," Deon thought to himself. He had seen her in action before, but something was different this time. Her power was much stronger, her aura brighter. It was as if she had evolved into something greater.

Deon pushed forward, calling out to his friend. "Nyx! Need a hand?"

Nyx turned, a rare grin spreading across his usually stoic face. "Perfect timing, Deon! These brutes just don't know when to quit." He gestured to his healer. "Meet Seraphis—she's not just a healer anymore. Watch this!"

As if on cue, Seraphis's aura shifted from a soft glow to a blazing inferno. Her eyes burned with a new intensity as she raised her hands. A torrent of fire erupted from her palms, consuming a group of Barbarians in front of her. But that wasn't all—just as quickly, she summoned a powerful gust of wind, turning the flames into a swirling firestorm that swept through the enemy ranks.

Deon was stunned. "She controls both fire and air now? How is that possible?"

Nyx smirked. "She evolved just in time for this little skirmish. I always knew she had the potential, but this... this is something else."

Before Deon could respond, a massive roar shook the ground. The Barbarians had brought forth one of their giant war beasts—a monstrous creature with thick, armored skin and fiery breath. It charged towards the gates, crushing everything in its path.

"Jolt, Thunder Strike!" Deon commanded, sending his lightning pet into action. Jolt released a powerful bolt of electricity, aiming for the beast's head. But the war beast barely flinched, shaking off the attack like it was nothing.

"Zephyros, we need to slow it down!" Deon ordered. His air-type pet soared into the sky, flapping its wings to create a powerful whirlwind. The winds slammed into the war beast, slowing its advance, but it continued to push forward.

"Let me handle this!" Nyx shouted. "Seraphis, Flame Cyclone!"

With a fierce cry, Seraphis combined her mastery of fire and air to create a massive cyclone of flames. The fiery tornado engulfed the war beast, trapping it in a vortex of searing heat. The creature roared in agony, thrashing wildly as it tried to break free.

Deon saw his chance. "Jolt, let's finish this! Thunder Blast, now!" Jolt gathered all its energy, unleashing a devastating blast of lightning that struck the war beast square in the chest. The combination of Seraphis's firestorm and Jolt's thunderous attack was too much for the beast to handle. It let out one final, ear-splitting roar before collapsing in a smoking heap.

The battlefield was momentarily silent as the Barbarians watched their most powerful creature fall. Then, with a series of angry shouts, they turned and fled back into the wilderness, their morale shattered.

Breathing heavily, Deon turned to Nyx, who was watching the retreating enemy with a satisfied grin. "You've got some serious firepower on your side now," Deon said, nodding to Seraphis.

Nyx chuckled, wiping the sweat from his brow. "She's a miracle worker, that's for sure. Evolved right in the middle of the battle. I didn't even know it was possible."

Deon glanced at Seraphis, who was now glowing with a faint, golden light as she healed the wounded soldiers. "So, what triggered her evolution?" he asked.

Nyx shrugged. "Not entirely sure. But I think it was the pressure of the battle, the need to protect. She's always been a healer, but today she found a new side of herself. A side that can fight back."

Deon nodded thoughtfully. "I guess it's true what they say—you never really know the full potential of your beasts until they're pushed to their limits."

As the soldiers began to cheer and celebrate their victory, Deon felt a surge of pride for his own team. They had all grown stronger, especially Jolt, who had faced the monstrous war beast without hesitation. But seeing Seraphis evolve like that gave him new inspiration. If Nyx's healer could evolve into a dual-type powerhouse, then perhaps his own beasts had hidden potential waiting to be unlocked.

"Come on," Nyx said, clapping Deon on the back. "We've earned ourselves a break. Let's head back and get some rest."

Deon nodded, calling his pets to his side. But as they made their way back to the city, he couldn't shake the feeling that this was just the beginning. The Barbarians had been repelled for now, but their attacks were becoming more frequent and more intense. If they were to survive, he needed to push his team even harder, to unlock their true potential before the next battle arrived.

Back at House 15, Deon sat by the fire, reflecting on the events of the day. His pets were resting, exhausted from the battle, but he could see the fire in their eyes. They were ready for whatever came next.

"Nyx, what's your plan?" Deon asked as Nyx joined him by the fire.

Nyx leaned back, looking up at the star-filled sky. "The Barbarians are getting bolder. We can't just keep defending; we need to take the fight to them. But for that, we need more power."

Deon nodded slowly. "More power… you mean more evolved beasts?"

"Exactly," Nyx said, his eyes gleaming with determination. "We need to push our teams to their limits, just like Seraphis did today. We have to be ready for anything."

Deon clenched his fists, feeling a surge of resolve. "Then let's do it. Tomorrow, we start training harder than ever. I want my team to be as strong as yours."

Nyx grinned. "That's the spirit. Let's make sure the next time the Barbarians show up, they won't know what hit them."

As they sat by the fire, planning their next moves, Deon felt a renewed sense of purpose. The road ahead would be tough, but he was ready for the challenge. With Nyx by his side and his ever-growing team of powerful beasts, he knew they stood a fighting chance.

The flames crackled in the hearth, casting long shadows across the room. And in those shadows, Deon could see the outlines of the battles yet to come. But he was ready. They all were.
