Chapter 17 - Service area

On the highway.

Brian was driving a car with bullet holes all over the car, driving fast on the highway. The left and right side mirrors had already been completely shattered in the shooting at this time. He could only look at the central rearview mirror inside the car to observe the situation behind the car.

He didn't see any military trucks chasing him until he had gone several hundred meters away. Although he was very puzzled, his nervousness gradually subsided and he turned his head to hide his body in the seat. Sarah inside said, "Get up, they're not following us."

Sarah trembled slightly, stood up and looked around, seeing that they were already on the road, then she patted her chest and let out a long sigh of relief, what happened just now was like a cops and bandits movie she had seen before and left her a little overwhelmed.

He looked angrily at Brian who was driving, and just wanted to reprimand him, but found that his face and arms were covered in blood, and he suddenly exclaimed.

"Are you hurt? Were you shot?"

"What?" Hearing Sarah's exclamation, Brian felt the abnormality in his body. After the nervous state dissipated, he felt a little weak all over his body, and intense pain struck his body. Terribly bad.

The splattered glass fragments also left many wounds on his body, especially a burning pain on the right side of his face, which made him realize that a bullet had just grazed his cheek.

This discovery suddenly made him feel nagging fears, and he realized that he made a very unwise decision because his brain was hot. If it weren't for his luck, he was afraid that he would have been shot by a bullet at this moment and it would be a headshot.

"It's okay, I wasn't shot, we move forward and treat the wound when we get to a safe place."

Looking at the blood that continued to flow from the wound, Sarah could only temporarily suppress her worry, took out a few packs of tissues from her backpack and wiped the wound on the other party's body.

Although the broken windshield blocked Brian's view, luckily there were no other vehicles on the road, he drove the car for half an hour before stopping at the emergency stop next to Sarah's constant urging in the driveway.

"You are really crazy to dare to do something so dangerous."

Carefully removing the glass shards remaining in Brian's wound, Sarah expressionlessly dipped a cotton swab in alcohol to clean the wounds on his face and hands, and only when she looked at the other's face distorted by pain did she scolding in her heart.

Brian smiled wryly and knew he was a little impulsive today. He looked at Sarah and said quietly, "I was impulsive today and we could have died. I was reckless, I'm sorry."

When Sarah heard this, she knew that the other party had already made a mistake, so she didn't say anything, just picked up the bandage and carefully wrapped it around her arm several times.

She didn't know what kind of feelings she had for Brian. She didn't know when it started. She started to depend on Brian more and more and she didn't want to see him get hurt. And when he almost killed himself, she felt very angry.

Seeing that his wound had been treated, Brian moved his muscles and bones, looked at the car that was riddled with holes and said, and said to Sarah who was packing tools beside him: "It seems we need to change the car."

  "Huh? What's this?"

Walking to the front of the car, Brian suddenly found a piece of plywood under the windshield wiper with a few sheets of paper on it. Because the windshield was broken, he didn't really notice this thing while driving.

Removing the splint, he opened it and found that it turned out to be an army registration sheet, which read:

  6:10

From the main base in the south, head to the northern blockade point.

  7:03

Arrive at the northern blocking point and begin deploying blocking measures.

  ...

Except for these two lines of records, there is no other content. Obviously, this battle table has just started to be recorded, and after seeing the word after "mission" at the bottom of the battle table, Brian's face changed slightly, knowing that his hunch was right, because it was written: block all entrances and exits and clear the infected area indiscriminately!

Although it sounds a bit scary, Brian had actually already guessed that this would be the result.

When he set out again, he told Sarah what he found and allowed her to read the contents on the log sheet.

There are basically no tolls on the roads, so if a vehicle wants to refuel, eat or rest, it must exit the road.

When the car drove for another half hour, Brian saw the service area exit sign on the notice board in front, turned the steering wheel to the right without hesitation, and exited the highway through the exit.

There is a service area not far from the highway exit, which is basically no different from what he has seen in his previous life. They are all standard gas stations, restaurants and convenience stores, and there is a motel in front of the service area. Looking towards the end of the road, they could even vaguely see the outline of the nearest town.

It's just that right now, whether it's the service area or the motel, it's a mess, it's obviously been ravaged by infected people.

  "Let's take a look."

Parking the car on the side of the road, Brian opened the cabin door and brought out all the guns and iron bars. He had already handed the dagger to Sarah. After all, she wasn't strong enough. It's better to use a sharp weapon, the assault rifle had already been fired in the last infected cleanup, and was reduced to a decoration.

The two didn't choose the service area that seemed to have plenty of supplies, but instead headed toward the motel across the street.

Your main priority now is to quickly find a car that you can continue driving. There are no cars in the service area parking lot and your need for food is not very urgent right now, so there are several cars parked across the street. The motel, of course, has become your primary target of choice.

But the two of them didn't realize that in the service area behind them, there were two figures hiding in the convenience store, watching their every move from the dark.

"I didn't expect there to be a mobile home here."

Scanning the cars in the parking lot, Brian found that in the innermost corner, a white giant was parked, and his eyes suddenly lit up.

This is a good thing. They still have a journey ahead of them, with their own beds and bathrooms. If this guy is there, the next trip should be a lot easier.

But after thinking about it, Brian still shook his head and gave up the idea. This RV is really too conspicuous, it is easy to cause unnecessary trouble, and because of the size, the travel speed will be very limited. So after thinking about it, he still gave up this option.

  "The driver's door is locked."

Then, seeing that there were no infected people in the parking lot, Sarah bravely walked in, moved back and forth in the few remaining cars, and pulled the cabin door, only to find that all the doors were locked.

"There should be a key in the reception room. Go in and look for it."

Seeing this, Brian looked around, pointed to a small house near the road, and walked over with Sarah.

The two of them slowly walked to the glass door of the reception room. As the window was blocked by blinds, they could only hear the movement inside through the glass door. Then, he slowly opened the door and looked inside.

Unlike the messy scene outside, the reception room looks extraordinarily tidy, as if someone was cleaning here often, Sarah asked with some doubts: "Why is it so clean here?"

"I don't know, maybe it's because the door is closed."

But after seeing the situation inside, Brian immediately thought of something, winked at Sarah, answered her words in his mouth, raised his gun, and slowly approached the locked room inside.

When Sarah noticed the other party's abnormality, she immediately reacted. She also raised her pistol and said in cooperation: "Don't worry about it, let's find the car keys quickly."

During the conversation, Brian had reached the door of the room. When Sarah finished speaking,

He slammed the door open and ran into the room.

What surprised him was that the room was empty except for the messy sheets on the bed and a bunk bed under the bed.

"How is it, is there anyone there?"

Sarah, who was standing outside intently, saw Brian walk in for a long time without moving, and asked worriedly.

"It's okay, there's no one inside."

Bending down and reaching for the quilt, Brian could still feel a trace of residual warmth inside. He stood up and said, "Someone lived here, but they seem to have left."

"Don't worry about it, let's hurry up and find the car keys."

Seeing that there was no threat inside, Sarah crawled straight to the reception desk and began rummaging through the boxes, but after searching for a long time, she couldn't find anything, so she ran to the bedroom to search, and finally found a small one inside the bedside table. The car keys were found in the tin box.

  "Look, here's the key."
