Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Trials of the Mortal World

The early morning sun seeped through the curtains of their luxurious hotel suite, casting a gentle warmth that stirred Queen Lira from her sleep. She stretched, feeling the unfamiliar linens around her, a strange sensation compared to the silken sheets of her own realm. Nearby, Lysandra was already awake, inspecting the surroundings with a mixture of awe and trepidation.

Their journey into the mortal world had been baffling yet exhilarating, and now, with a full night's rest behind them, they were ready to face whatever human life had to offer—though neither of them realized just how much more they would have to learn.

A sudden loud knock at the door jolted them both from their thoughts. Lira narrowed her eyes, annoyed. "This world doesn't believe in peace, does it?"

Lysandra sighed and crossed the room, opening the door to find a smiling hotel attendant, a young woman carrying a tray loaded with breakfast dishes.

"Good morning!" she chirped, pushing the tray inside without waiting for an invitation. "We brought breakfast, complimentary, of course, for our esteemed guests."

"Thank you," Lysandra replied curtly, eyeing the tray with suspicion as the attendant left.

Lira glanced at the food, uncertain of what to make of it. Her kingdom was filled with feasts of roasted meats, exotic fruits, and wines crafted from rare enchanted flowers. But this assortment of unfamiliar items, cylindrical meats, round bread with some spread in the middle, and fruits sliced into perfect sections, left her baffled.

"What… is this?" Lira asked, picking up a glass of what appeared to be orange liquid. She sniffed it, expecting the rich scent of royal nectar, only to find it sour and somewhat bitter.

"Perhaps it's a type of potion," Lysandra said, examining a fork as if it were a weapon.

Lira took a tentative sip, only to wrinkle her nose in distaste. She set the glass down and moved on to the toast, lifting it with curiosity. "Humans eat strange things," she remarked.

Attempting to follow the human dining customs they'd observed in the café, Lysandra picked up a fork and knife, awkwardly trying to cut into a pancake. "How do they expect us to eat with these… metallic sticks?" she muttered, giving up and using her hands.

Just then, Lira bit into a piece of toast, only to spit it out immediately. "This world truly tests our patience!" she exclaimed, wiping her mouth.

Unable to understand the appeal of these peculiar foods, they left the breakfast tray nearly untouched and turned their attention to preparing for the day ahead.

After breakfast, Lysandra approached the sleek, polished bathroom, where more mysteries awaited. In their realm, bathing involved natural springs infused with enchanted oils, offering a relaxing experience. But here, strange knobs and switches decorated a tiled wall.

"What are these contraptions?" Lysandra whispered, touching a shiny silver faucet. Water spurted out suddenly, and she leaped back with a startled gasp. The water continued to run, spraying with more intensity as she accidentally turned the faucet to full blast.

Lira came to investigate the commotion, stifling a laugh as she watched Lysandra wrestle with the faucet. "Perhaps this is another human trial," she suggested with a smirk.

She walked over and gently twisted one of the knobs, making the water change temperature. "Interesting… it's almost like magic, but primitive."

Encouraged by Lira's success, Lysandra carefully examined the faucet and twisted the knob until she was able to manage a steady stream. They quickly adapted to the process, though it was far from the luxurious bathhouses they were accustomed to.

When Lira finally stepped into the shower, the sensation of warm water cascading down was unexpectedly pleasant, but the modern soap and shampoo confused her further. She inspected the bottles, sniffing at each one as Lysandra laughed quietly from the doorway.

"It seems even bathing requires strategy here," Lira muttered, pouring a handful of shampoo onto her hair.

The experience was chaotic yet oddly satisfying as they figured out each step of the strange ritual. By the time they finished, they were both exhausted but felt accomplished, as if they'd conquered yet another of humanity's challenges.

Once they were dressed in their freshly cleaned clothes, Lira inspected herself in the mirror, admiring the strange yet captivating human attire they had chosen, modern dresses with a regal flair, accentuating their elegance even in this new world.

Just then, there was another knock at the door, startling them both. Lira straightened her posture and gestured for Lysandra to answer it. The same attendant who had brought their breakfast now stood outside, holding a small device.

"I was sent to see if you had any questions about your stay," the attendant said, though her tone hinted at curiosity regarding the untouched breakfast tray.

Lira smiled, adopting the practiced grace of a ruler addressing her subjects. "We are quite… satisfied," she replied, though her gaze drifted to the device in the attendant's hand.

Sensing Lira's interest, the attendant held it up with a smile. "Oh, this? It's just my phone."

Lysandra stepped forward, intrigued. "A… phone?"

"Yes," the attendant replied with a chuckle. "It's how we communicate and access information." She handed it to Lira, who examined the screen with fascination.

"Interesting," Lira murmured, pressing a few buttons with curiosity. The device lit up with images, colors, and words, almost as if it contained an entire world within it. She handed it back to the attendant with a gracious nod, hiding her awe.

As the attendant left, Lira and Lysandra looked at each other with wide eyes.

After recovering from the encounter, Lira and Lysandra decided they needed more information about the human world if they were to fulfill their mission and locate Lira's soulmate. They had no intention of revealing their identities, so they would have to be clever.

"We must find a guide," Lira declared as they made their way outside, marveling again at the vibrant city around them. The towering structures, metal machines that humans called "cars," and throngs of people bustling through the streets were still a novelty.

"Your Majesty, perhaps we can visit one of those 'stores' we've seen," Lysandra suggested. "The humans there might be able to answer our questions."

Lira nodded thoughtfully. "Very well. But remember, we must blend in. No titles or formalities."

Lysandra straightened, nodding. "Understood… Lira."

They shared a small smile at the informal address, acknowledging the difficulty of their task. To be incognito while carrying the regal airs they were accustomed to was a daunting challenge. Still, they were committed to learning, adapting, and completing their mission.

Their search eventually led them to a large bookstore, filled with endless shelves of human literature. Lira's eyes sparkled as she took in the countless volumes, feeling at home in the quiet, knowledge-filled atmosphere. She picked up a book on modern human customs, flipping through the pages with growing fascination.

"This may serve as our guide," she whispered to Lysandra, showing her the book titled Navigating Modern Life.

They took it to the counter, where an elderly cashier raised an eyebrow as he rang up the purchase. Lira handed over some cash, she had familiarized herself with the value of different bills, and thanked him, her voice smooth and confident.

Leaving the store, they held their prized "guide" close, both relieved and amused by the strange experience. Armed with their new knowledge, they returned to the hotel and spent hours studying, flipping through pages, and marveling at how complex yet intriguing the human world was.

As night fell, they took turns practicing human customs they'd read about. Lira even managed to turn on the television, which at first startled them with its moving pictures and sound. They both watched in awe, laughing and marveling at the idea of storytelling through such a contraption.

"This realm may not have magic as we know it," Lira remarked, "but they have their own version of it."

The day's adventures had brought them closer to understanding humans, but they both knew the journey had only just begun. Queen Lira's quest to find her soulmate in this bewildering world was far from over, but each small victory was another step forward.

As she gazed out at the city lights, Lira felt a sense of anticipation bubbling within her. She was ready for whatever lay ahead, determined to conquer this mortal realm and fulfill her destiny.
