Chapter 1 - Ariel

I woke up feeling lazy, struggling to get out of bed when I heard a familiar voice call out, "Ariel." It was my mother, Athena, summoning me to start preparing for the day ahead. I groggily opened my eyes, hoping it was just another ordinary day, but deep down, I knew better.

Today was the day I'd been dreading for weeks – my wedding day. I was being married off to someone I barely knew, a man I'd only heard whispers and dark rumors about. The thought sent shivers down my spine.

According to my father, the king, this marriage would secure more allies and power for our kingdom. But at what cost? I couldn't understand why his ambition had to come at the expense of my happiness.

My mother entered the room, her expression a mix of sadness and resignation. She gestured for my maid, Yelena, to prepare my bath. Yelena had been my closest friend and confidante since childhood; she knew me better than anyone in the castle.

"Time to get ready, Ariel," Yelena said softly, helping me out of bed.

As I bathed, my emotions swirled: happiness at leaving the restrictive palace life, fear of the unknown, or dread of the wedding night? I couldn't pinpoint my feelings. Was I excited to start a new life or terrified of being tied to a stranger?

After my bath, Yelena helped me into a stunning red gown, adorned with delicate flowers on the shoulders. The corset hugged my waist, and the skirt flowed elegantly to the floor.

"You look breathtaking, Ariel," Yelena said, her eyes welling up with tears.

She styled my hair, transforming me into a goddess. The mirror reflected a woman I barely recognized – poised, regal, and beautiful.

On my way to the throne room, nerves and uncertainty plagued me. What would my husband look like? Would he be kind or cruel? Would he understand me? I pushed those thoughts aside, focusing on the task at hand.

As I descended the stairs, the murmurs of the guests grew louder. I felt like a pawn in a game, a mere object to be traded. But I refused to show weakness.

I entered the throne room, where the guests' whispers and admiring glances didn't faze me. I kept my head held high, my gaze fixed on the floor.

At the throne, a man offered his hand. "You don't have to be scared to take my hand, Princess," he said softly.

His gentle touch surprised me. I lifted my gaze, and my breath caught. His face was perfection – handsome, beautiful, and captivating. His piercing blue eyes locked onto mine, and I felt trapped by his gaze, my mind empty of thoughts.

For a moment, I forgot about the arranged marriage, the politics, and the uncertainty. All I saw was him.

"Look at me, Ariel," he whispered, his voice sending shivers down my spine.

I obeyed, my heart racing. Who was this man, and why did he have such an effect on me?

As our eyes met, time stood still. His chiseled features, his radiant smile, left me breathless. "Perfection," I whispered to myself, my heart skipping a beat.

His gaze ensnared me, a gentle trap that rendered my thoughts silent. I stood there, lost in the depths of his eyes, my soul suspended in awe.

Words failed me as I stood transfixed, unable to tear my gaze from his piercing eyes. His stare held me captive, rendering my mind blank. No thoughts, no doubts, just an overwhelming sense of wonder.

As I stood there, frozen in time, I realized that maybe, just maybe, this marriage wouldn't be the prison I feared.

But only time would tell.
