Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Inducing a Confession

As Akikawa Kyousuke exited the bathroom and walked back to the room, the detective posing as a nurse began to speak with him again.

Even after Akikawa Kyousuke returned to the room and lay down on the bed, the detective kept talking to him.

Although all the questions seemed trivial, the words showed his concern for Akikawa Kyousuke.

He discovered that, although Akikawa Kyousuke had little desire to talk to him at first, he was now giving more detailed answers to his questions.

Over time, Akikawa Kyousuke's desire to converse with him grew stronger.

Later on, it was Akikawa Kyousuke himself who did most of the talking.

"Although on the surface, they distrust strangers, they are actually more trusting of others than the average person. They are also very willing to talk and have a mental age younger than their actual age."

"It really fits the profile of a child who was abused during their adolescence and suffered psychological trauma."

The detective would occasionally respond to Akikawa Kyousuke's comments, all while thinking to himself.

"This is a detective. It's surprising that you can make such a judgment just from describing it over the phone."

The detective recalled what had happened the night before and couldn't help but sigh inwardly.

His name was Takuto Nakajima, and he was the Chief Inspector in the First Investigation Section of the Metropolitan Police Department.

The night before, after receiving the order, Nakajima Takuto had hurried to the hospital where the suspect, Akikawa Kyousuke, was being treated following the murder case on the national highway.

He had met Kazunobu Chiba, who was also in the First Criminal Investigation Division and in the Third Forced Investigation Division, a higher level than Nakajima himself.

Also present was the elementary school student named Conan, who usually followed his idol, the great detective Kogoro Mori.

At that moment, the suspect, Akikawa Kyousuke, had been sent to the emergency room for treatment.

Chiba and Nobu had asked the hospital to find them an empty room. This is where something Takuto Nakajima would never forget in the future happened.

"This guy, Akikawa, must have been under house arrest by his mother all year. Not only did he have no access to the outside world, but he also suffered from various problems due to long-term malnutrition."

"So he had enough motive to commit the crime."

Just when Nakajima Takuto was still wondering why an elementary school student had been brought there, the first words the student spoke surprised both him and Chiba Kazunobu.

"Also, the attack on the deceased, Akikawa Ryoko, with a dagger must have occurred after the car accident."

This was truly incredible because detective Wataru Takagi and police officer Miwako Sato were still investigating at the scene, and the police had only just learned the identities of the victim and the suspect.

Had the elementary school student already figured out the suspect's motive?

How was that possible?

Nakajima Takuto immediately asked Conan how he knew these things.

Immediately after, he heard Conan explain everything one by one.

"Judging by the skin color, the suspect has not been exposed to sunlight all year."

"Judging by his muscles, the suspect has not attended school regularly for many years."

At first, Nakajima Takuto thought the elementary school student was just talking nonsense. But after hearing the explanation, he gradually started to believe Conan's judgment in his heart.

Of course, it was Conan's final words that had a decisive effect:

"I'm just passing this on to Sister Sera!"

Nakajima Takuto had also heard about "Sera Sister" from Conan.

Masumi Sera was a high school detective who had recently gained a great reputation in Tokyo.

The genius detective of the high school, Kudo Shinichi, had disappeared suddenly for unknown reasons.

Masumi Sera had replaced Kudo Shinichi and gradually became a great assistant to the Metropolitan Police Department.

The Metropolitan Police Department had acted very quickly. After receiving the search warrant, it only took one night to confirm that Sera Masaki's judgment was correct.

The suspect, Kyousuke Akikawa, had left school before finishing elementary school and had never returned.

The Metropolitan Police Department had its own set of methods to contact suspects with special experiences.

"Children who were abused by their parents when they were young tend to be very cautious around strangers."

"Although they distrust strangers, it's only because of the treatment they've received. As long as kindness is shown gradually, trust can be easily gained."

"He left elementary school before finishing it and basically never came into contact with strangers, so his mental age should be younger than his actual age."

"As long as we can get the suspect to confess in person, we'll save ourselves a lot of trouble."

"What? Did you say inhumanity? Do criminals have human rights?"

—This was the "advice" Nakajima Takuto received from his superior.

Nakajima Takuto looked at Akikawa Kyousuke, who was speaking non-stop.

While he felt happy that he had gained the other person's trust, he also felt a bit sad.

"It's really like a little child."

Akikawa Kyousuke exhibited a very low mental age in his conversation.

If Nakajima Takuto hadn't read Akikawa Kyousuke's file, he never would have guessed it.

The young man in front of him, like a child, eagerly recounting the wonderful stories from the picture books he had read, was actually old enough to drink yesterday. But even though Nakajima Takuto felt sympathy for the abuse Akikawa Kyousuke had suffered at the hands of his mother, that did not mean he could accept Akikawa Kyousuke's actions of killing his biological mother.

People who commit mistakes will always have to pay the price for their actions.

Nakajima Takuto felt that it was almost time, so he stood up.

Akikawa Kyousuke, who had been talking enthusiastically, suddenly stopped. After a few seconds of astonishment, an unmistakable look of loneliness appeared on his thin cheeks.

"It's time. I'll go get your food and listen to you when I come back."

Nakajima Takuto looked at Akikawa Kyousuke's reaction and felt a little confused.

However, this was a necessary step.

"Alright!"

Akikawa Kyousuke's dull eyes suddenly lit up, and he nodded heavily.

Nakajima Takuto left the room.

As soon as he softly closed the door, he could still feel the burning gaze from the hospital bed behind him.

"Ah, it's torture. It really hurts my conscience to do this kind of work."

Nakajima Takuto sighed deeply again, but it was a pity that the repressed emotions in his chest couldn't be fully exhaled.

After gaining the trust, he briefly left to test Akikawa Kyousuke's reaction. It was obvious that the other side had basically trusted him.

As time passed, the other side would definitely feel uncomfortable and wonder if they had been deceived.

He would wait until the agreed time had passed before returning. This sense of reunion would make the other party appreciate this false relationship even more.

At this point, basically, as long as he followed the temptation, the other party would completely fall for it.

"Let him confess as soon as possible. He has been under house arrest by his mother since he was a child and has to go to prison now. It's really pitiful."

"But for him, prison should be much better than home. After all, the facilities in Japanese prisons are quite good now, and the food is decent."

Nakajima Takuto comforted himself in his heart and then walked towards the room he had borrowed earlier.

He needed to spend some time there and report the situation.

——On the other side.

In the room, Akikawa Kyousuke watched Nakajima Takuto leave the room, and the expression on his face gradually cooled, returning to his usual impassive look.

"Inducing a confession."

"Obviously, this was something prohibited in the last century, but I didn't expect that the Japanese criminal police still use this inhumane method to this day."

"You don't treat me like a human at all."

Akikawa Kyousuke found this a bit incredible.

If it had been a force from the dark side, it would still make sense to adopt such a method.

After all, they themselves disregard the law.

But Akikawa Kyousuke didn't expect the detectives of the Metropolitan Police Department to treat him this way.

However, Akikawa Kyousuke, who was being treated like this, didn't feel upset at all.

On the contrary, he felt happy.

"If the Metropolitan Police Department truly has conclusive evidence that is enough to convict someone, why would they waste time trying to get a confession? Wouldn't it be better to just arrest the person?"

"It's precisely because they doubt me but can't convict me, that they want to lure me into revealing the truth."

After confirming that the situation hadn't gotten out of hand, Akikawa Kyousuke once again felt relaxed in his heart.

*Ding*

Just as Akikawa Kyousuke relaxed, the sudden, sharp mechanical sound echoed in his mind again.

At the same time, the translucent blue source appeared once more in front of Akikawa Kyousuke's eyes.

[The motive for the crime is becoming clearer, and you're unsure if there's a clue you've missed. You, who only lack information, will face the detective who has identified you as the murderer. You suspect, but they still show you good intentions. What will you do?]

[1. Think that the other party is a trustworthy person and tell them everything you've done.]

  [Reward: Skill Card x1]

[2. Play your role well, lower the criminal police's alertness, and steal intelligence.]

  [Reward: Physical +3]

[3. Decide that the other person is showing you false goodwill, point it out in front of them, and reveal your identity as a criminal police officer.]

  [Reward: Agility +3]

"It turns out that the next option may appear even if the last option hasn't finished."

"But this time, it seems there's only one correct choice."

Akikawa Kyousuke sighed in his heart and now began to look forward to it eagerly.

"I just don't know how much information this criminal police officer can provide me."
