"Wh-what happened?... My phone had exploded killing me in that blast... and now I'm in a parallel world?" Ethan Grave sat up on an unfamiliar bed, his mind reeling.
Just moments before, he'd been casually scrolling through a Pokédex app on his phone when it overheated and, with a loud "Boom," launched him into what felt like another dimension.
When he regained consciousness, everything around him had changed, yet he somehow felt... the same.
That is, until fragments of unfamiliar memories started flooding his mind, piecing together the strange reality he now inhabited. He'd been reborn in a parallel world.
"And in this life... my grandfather was actually a wealthy man who left me a fortune worth hundreds of millions," Ethan realized, a grin spreading across his face.
In his previous life, he and his grandfather had lived as simpletons, barely scraping by. His grandfather's passing had left him with little more than a small cottage. But here, he was the heir to a vast estate which was truly a different life.
"A rich second-generation kid, huh?" he mused, though his thoughts grew somber as he sifted through his inherited memories, uncovering a complex picture of this world's technology, especially the biological side of it.
This parallel world was oddly behind in some areas: communication was still stuck in the early 3G era, and the entertainment industry was underdeveloped.
Computers lagged by over five years compared to his former world. Yet, in biology, the world had taken a bizarre leap forward. Here, scientists had mastered the art of creating new life forms, endowing some creatures with abilities reminiscent of Pokémon, special creatures from another verse.
"Entirely new species with special powers, like Eruption Dogs and Space Geese..." he murmured, marveling at the oddities birthed here.
The progress was short of astonishing, scientists could clone, edit genes, and design creatures from scratch.
In fact, this field had advanced so rapidly that new biotech achievements seemed to emerge every year.
There was no surprise then that creature creation had become mainstream, with leading methods like the Chino Gene Method, Beta Mutagenesis Agent, and Vegapunk's Gene Editing Method frequently making headlines. The latter, pioneered by a renowned biologist from the Alverez Kingdom, was particularly popular.
Ethan scanned his memories, realizing this world now had thousands of engineered creatures, most of which served as household pets, while others roamed the wild, expanding the ecosystems in ways unthinkable back in his previous world.
These creations were known as "New Century Creatures."
"It's no wonder I started a biotech company here," he thought, recalling his previous life's ambitions more clearly. This world's Ethan had once dreamed big, founding a company named Lulu Biotechnology to tap into the booming biodesign industry. But he had been too naïve, too trusting of those around him.
"Lulu Biotechnology Company..." he muttered, clenching his fists. "The previous me was foolish, putting too much faith in my so-called friend, Jerry Fowler. We created something incredible together, only for him to betray me, stealing everything and leaving me in ruins."
A year ago, he and Jerry had launched Lulu Biotechnology together, diving into New Century creature research.
But exactly four months ago, they achieved a breakthrough, only for Jerry to run off with their tech, research data, and even the core team, setting up a rival company.
And to make things worse, there had been no written contract, just the blind trust and belief of friendship.
"It was all just lip service," he said bitterly, shaking his head. "I should've known better. Business needs more than a handshake and a polite smile."
When Ethan had tried to sue Jerry, it backfired. Jerry had smeared his name and reputation online, and netizens turned against him, claiming Ethan was just trying to ride Jerry's success for cheap publicity.
The company's reputation had plummeted, Business opportunities had waned, employees left, and now bankruptcy loomed.
"Three million in the red and counting," he sighed. "And that's only because this world's tech is affordable, otherwise, I'd be left with nothing."
Yet, despite everything, Ethan felt a glimmer of optimism. He had a lot more here than he ever did back in his old world: money, a car, a house, plus this was a world rich with possibilities. If the company did go under, he could branch out, leverage his knowledge of media from his former world, or even dive into animation or film, genres barely touched here.
His thoughts shifted as he noticed his body: 1.8 meters (5ft 9in) tall with a handsome face and a physique that screamed privilege. this world's Ethan had grown up with every advantage.
Then, as if in response to his thoughts, a screen flashed into existence before him.
Ethan's eyes widened. "The Pokédex app... it traveled here with me?"
This app, a fan creation from some obscure corner of the internet, had cataloged every Pokémon he could think of. But now, it seemed... different.
A notification chimed, and new text appeared.
"Loading complete!"
"Welcome to the God-Level Pokémon System..."
Ethan stared, spellbound, as instructions filled the screen. It was a system that allowed him to roll a dice to unlock and extract Pokémon genes, integrating them with other species to create Pokémon-like creatures of his own. He could roll this dice periodically, but for now, only a few Pokémon genes were accessible to him.
"God-Level Pokémon System... So I can actually create Pokémons?" His heart raced. "So that explosion wasn't just random, it was this app, bringing me here with a purpose."
A small icon drew his attention in the upper left corner: a triangular, four-sided dice. He reached out, fingers trembling in anticipation.
"Here goes nothing," he whispered, tapping it lightly.
The dice began to shake...
