Grey leaned back in the seat of the war room, his fingers tapping rhythmically on the edge of the table. The weight of their recent victory still lingered, but there was no time to revel in success. HYDRA was already regrouping, and the damage they'd caused to the organization would only spur them to retaliate with more force. The calm after their attack was more like a brief pause before the storm.
"We hit them hard, but they're not going to let this slide," Bucky said, his voice low, eyes scanning the maps displayed on the screens in front of them. He was leaning against the wall, arms crossed. His expression was unreadable, but Grey could sense the tension in his posture. Bucky had been through this kind of fight before, and Grey trusted him to see what he couldn't.
Grey nodded, his gaze shifting between the various screens as ALICE's latest analysis came through. The AI had successfully traced several of HYDRA's operations, tracking communications between different factions. Their enemy was regrouping faster than expected, deploying new weapons and recruits.
"ALICE, what's the status of their supply lines?" Grey asked, his mind already working on their next move. "Where are they focusing their resources?"
"HYDRA has shifted operations to underground bunkers and remote locations. Their supply lines are in constant flux, but they are heavily reinforced in areas such as Latveria and Sokovia. They are also ramping up their biological weapons research."
Grey's fingers tightened around the edge of the table. Biological weapons. That was an escalation he hadn't anticipated. He knew HYDRA's willingness to use any means necessary to maintain control, but this? This was something else.
"We need to shut that down," he muttered, more to himself than to anyone else in the room.
Bucky raised an eyebrow. "You're thinking of going after their biological weapons lab?"
Grey met his eyes. "If we don't, they'll use it to gain an even bigger foothold. The world won't be able to stop them if they unleash it."
Sarah, who had been monitoring the situation from the back of the room, stepped forward. "I agree. But we need to move quickly. If HYDRA gets their hands on something that powerful, we'll be fighting a war on multiple fronts. The sooner we disrupt their research, the better."
Grey's mind was already working, plotting out their next steps. They couldn't afford to wait. Every moment they lingered was another moment HYDRA had to develop their weapons, to fortify their positions. They had to hit them harder and faster.
"ALICE," Grey said, his voice sharp. "Coordinate with our allies and set up an extraction plan for the biological weapons lab. I want to move on this within the next twenty-four hours."
"Affirmative, Grey. I've already initiated the plan. Coordinating with local forces now."
Grey looked over at Bucky and Sarah. "We're going in fast and hard. We hit them where it hurts, then extract. This time, there's no room for failure."
The Next Strike
As night fell, the team prepared to leave for the mission. Grey felt the familiar rush of anticipation as he geared up. They had successfully crippled one of HYDRA's main facilities, but this next mission felt different. The stakes were higher. They weren't just fighting to disrupt HYDRA's operations—they were fighting to stop a weapon that could change the course of the entire war.
The biological weapons lab was hidden in the mountains of Latveria, an isolated region that was difficult to access. HYDRA had done its best to keep the lab off the grid, but Grey knew the terrain well enough to anticipate their defensive strategies.
"Bucky," Grey said, his tone calm but firm. "You'll be with me on the front lines. Sarah, you'll provide backup from the rear and cover our retreat."
Bucky nodded, his expression unreadable. "Understood."
The transport vehicle hummed as they made their way through the mountainous terrain, the night sky stretching out above them like a canopy. Grey's mind was still focused on the mission, the variables swirling in his thoughts. He had no intention of allowing this to be another trap. They were prepared this time. HYDRA's counterattack would not succeed.
When they arrived at the entrance of the compound, the cold air hit them with a brutal force. The facility was built into the side of the mountain, its metallic surface blending with the rocky landscape. It looked almost invisible under the cover of night, but ALICE's satellite feeds had pinpointed its exact location.
Grey gave the order to move, and the team split into their assigned positions. They quickly breached the outer perimeter, neutralizing the guards with efficiency that came from years of training. Inside, they moved silently, their steps light but deliberate. The smell of cold metal and sterile air filled the hallway as they advanced deeper into the complex.
The Lab
The lab was an underground network of steel corridors and high-tech security systems. They had been prepared for the heavy defenses, but the real challenge would come when they reached the heart of the operation—the biological weapons research facility. Grey had studied the layout and knew they had only a small window of time before HYDRA's reinforcements would arrive.
"ALICE, any updates?" Grey asked, keeping his voice low as he approached the lab's main door.
"I've bypassed most of the security systems, but the lab is still locked down. You have two minutes before the alarm system resets. Proceed with caution."
Grey turned to Bucky, who was already preparing to breach the door. "Ready?"
Bucky's eyes were steely. "Let's do this."
With a swift motion, Bucky kicked down the door, and the team flooded into the lab. Inside, rows of vials and equipment filled the sterile, white space. But it wasn't the equipment that caught Grey's eye—it was the large tank at the center of the room, containing a mutated organism that sent a chill down his spine.
"This is what we're here for," Grey said quietly, pointing to the tank.
They moved quickly, extracting the samples and data. The information they gathered would be invaluable in stopping HYDRA's plans, but they couldn't afford to stay long. Grey's instincts screamed that they needed to leave before reinforcements arrived.
The Escape
As they made their way back to the extraction point, the facility's alarms went off. Reinforcements were on their way.
"We've got company," Bucky muttered, checking his weapon.
Grey's mind raced as he ordered the team to fall back. The retreat was swift, but as they neared the exit, they were met with a wall of HYDRA operatives.
"Time's up," Grey muttered, looking at Bucky and Sarah. "Get to the transport. I'll hold them off."
Without waiting for a response, Grey threw himself into the fight, taking down enemy after enemy with brutal efficiency. Bucky and Sarah fought their way through the compound, but they couldn't afford to linger. Every second counted.
As they reached the extraction point, Grey joined them, and they raced back to the transport just as an explosion rocked the facility behind them.
"Mission complete," Grey said, panting but focused. "Let's go."
As they sped away from the mountain compound, Grey allowed himself a moment to breathe. They had accomplished their mission, but the war was far from over. HYDRA had been dealt another blow, but they would come back stronger. Grey knew it was only a matter of time before they would face them again.
And when they did, they would be ready.
