The hall was filled with pairs of exhausted, bruised, and weary competitors as they gathered after the test. The harsh lights overhead made the bruises and cuts on their faces and arms more noticeable, and for many, the adrenaline from the game had faded, replaced by aching limbs and strained expressions. Leo and Samantha stood together, silently observing the other pairs, noting how few of them had managed to pass. Dozens of faces had gone missing from the crowd, a testament to the harshness of the competition.
The sound of footsteps drew their attention to the front of the room, where Officer Vale walked up to a podium. Dressed sharply in her navy uniform, with a piercing gaze and an unwavering authority, she looked out over the assembled players, a small, almost proud smile tugging at her lips.
"Congratulations to those who passed the first test," she began, her voice loud and clear. "You've proven your mettle and entertained the audience—very well, in fact. Thanks to your efforts, the viewers were on the edge of their seats, and the government… well, let's just say this has been a very profitable start to the games."
There was a murmur of uncomfortable agreement among the players. Many of them were still adjusting to the reality of their situation—that they were, ultimately, here for the entertainment of the masses and as pawns in the government's pursuit of revenue.
Officer Vale continued, her tone unwavering. "As you know, the game is designed to reward the top performers. Today, we'll recognize the top three pairs based on the number of knockouts, and you'll also receive points to use at your discretion."
She pulled out a small tablet, glancing down at the results. "First place goes to Anton and Zara," she announced, nodding to the muscular guy and his female partner. Anton smirked, draping an arm over Zara's shoulder with a smug look as if he'd known this was coming. The two had knocked out a staggering eight pairs, dominating the competition with their brute force and aggression.
"Second place," Vale continued, her eyes scanning the room until they landed on Leo and Samantha, "goes to Leo and Samantha, with six knockouts."
A wave of satisfaction washed over Leo. Despite the bruises and fatigue, he felt a surge of pride. He looked over at Samantha, who gave him a small nod of approval. They'd fought hard, and even with their differences, they'd managed to secure second place.
Officer Vale's announcement wasn't over. "And finally, in third place, with four knockouts, are Marcus and Riley." A pair standing off to the side exchanged relieved smiles, their shoulders relaxing slightly as they absorbed the victory.
Officer Vale moved on to explain the rewards. "As our top performers, each of these three pairs has earned points—1000 points for first place, 600 for second, and 200 for third. These points can be used at the shopping stalls and food courts within the facility. Stock up on supplies, get a good meal, or, if you're so inclined, indulge in some alcohol to celebrate." She paused, a faint smile on her face. "Those of you who passed the test can enjoy the next two days with full freedom within the facility."
The announcement sparked murmurs among the players. A few exchanged excited looks; some were already making plans for what to do with their points, discussing the idea of proper food or a much-needed drink.
Vale's gaze grew colder as she turned her attention to the remaining players who hadn't placed. "As for those who failed this test, you'll have a different fate. You'll be required to participate in an additional exam. The next test will be your opportunity to redeem yourselves, but don't think for a second that it will be easier than this one."
The tension in the room rose as those who had failed looked at each other, expressions of worry and frustration crossing their faces. The reality of this competition was sinking in for everyone. Each test, each day, could be the difference between a taste of freedom and being drawn deeper into the merciless games.
With the announcement complete, Officer Vale gave a short nod. "That's all for today. Return to your rooms and relax. You've earned it… for now."
As the players began dispersing, Anton caught Leo's eye from across the room, flashing a self-assured grin and flexing his knuckles as if daring him to try something. Leo tensed, but Samantha placed a hand on his arm, guiding him toward the exit.
"Let it go," she murmured. "He's not worth the energy right now."
Reluctantly, Leo nodded, allowing Samantha to lead him away. As they left the hall and headed back to their shared room, Leo felt an odd sense of camaraderie with her. They had survived the first challenge, and in the back of his mind, he knew they'd need each other more than ever if they wanted to keep surviving in this twisted competition.
Back in their room, they found fresh towels and bottled water placed neatly by the door—a small gesture of acknowledgment for their endurance. Leo flopped onto the bed, still feeling the lingering aches from the day's skirmish, while Samantha took the towel and began wiping away the dust and grime that clung to her skin.
"I guess we did alright today," Leo said, breaking the silence.
Samantha gave him a small smile, a flicker of warmth in her eyes. "Yeah. We made a good team."
As they settled in for the evening, both were well aware that this was just the beginning. There would be more tests, more games, and more opponents, each one more determined than the last. And while today had gone well, the days ahead promised to test them in ways they couldn't yet imagine.
