Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: What It Means To Be An Amegakure Shinobi

* 1 week before the war in Ame No Kuni *

Hanzo-sama gathered up all the Genin, Chunin and Jonin in a room with all the major officials of the village. The Jonin's looked solemn as if they already knew what the top of the meeting was about. Then Hanzo-sama walked into the room. A room full of small conversations In an instant was as quiet as a monk during a vow of silence.

"Greetings all of you, I will be making this announcement short and to the point." Hanzo-sama says.

"We will be going to war against the five great Shinobi Nations!" Hanzo-sama says.

'For a moment we were shocked, not yet processing what Hanzo-sama said. But then bang. Someone finally snapped.' Fuyo thinks recalling the meeting.

"What do you mean we're going to war?" Random Ame Shinobi says.

"Yes, sure this must be a mistake Leader-sama!" Another voice chimed in.

"Yes, he's right! What about the armistice and contracts we've done for them. Why would they turn their backs on us and want to fight?" Another voice says trying to find the holes in the statement.

"This must be Hanzo-sama's attempt at a joke!" A man laughed to himself hoping others would join in.

'Eventually some did, and soon the room was filled with laughter.' Fuyo remembers thinking.

'But then we looked at the face of our leader, Hanzo the salamander. He was not laughing, not an ounce of amusement could be seen on his face.' Fuyo thinks back.

"Are you done? He asked, his tone not the least bit amused." Hanzo-sama says.

'We instinctually straightened our backs straight from the tone alone.' Fuyo thinks back.

"After the First Great Shinobi World War each nation faced its own level of conflict, and the economic disparity continues to grow. Widening the gap between us smaller nations and the larger powers of he shinobi world. The Sands, Rock, Cloud, and Mist all suffered a great amount of Ryo, land, and shinobi for their villages." Hanzo-sama says.

Hanzo scans the crowd that's been assembled and speaks once more. "As for us? You all know too well the live we live because of the wars these ungrateful nations start against themselves. Selfishly getting nations like us apart of their mess. Destroying our homes, crops, business, and killing our people as if they were nothing but livestock." Hanzo-sama says.

"Then why don't we join them?" One man said. 'Everyone just looked at him like he's join a second head. To not only interrupt Hanzo-sama but to also suggest something so crazy.' Fuyo remembers.

"Join them!!?" Hanzo growls at the man, the random man steps back in fear of Hanzo's gaze.

"Let me tell you something right now! Get that thought out of your head! No matter what nation we align with things won't change like you think they will. For a nation like Konoha we'd be nothing more than their vassal state. If Rock or Sand attack or look at them the wrong way we'd be sent to deal with them like attack-dogs. In an all-out war they'd still use our territory the way they do now, as collateral. The biggest thing we offer these countries is nothing more than a buffer state. We're asked to just lay down and die, even in death with our blood staining the mud they'd use the land the same way it's been used." Hanzo-sama says.

"Taki is one of the lead trade and merchant destinations not to mention on of the top vacation spots for Rich Nobles, the Daimyos would never allow their armies to attack the nation under normal circumstances. In Taki their approach is to open their borders and co-operate with both sides in hopes they keep the battle to a minimum. Kusa will do something similar and allow their borders to be open, but also hoping to join the winning side so they can gain something from this war. Birds only receives partial attacks along their borders as Sand and Rock don't feel the need to compete much with each other as the primary target is to get to the Land of Fire." Hanzo-sama says.

"Konoha!? Their position is the worst of all. Their nation is full of wildlife, clear streams, trees, the largest workforce of active and retired ninja, a rich culture of education, products, and fertile land as far as your eye can see. Rich doesn't begin to explain how fat the Daimyo's belly has gotten. If not for their gluttony the other nations wouldn't have constant wars that would involve us." Hanzo-sama says.

"I don't know about the rest of you, but I train my body to its limit, to gain power to challenge the powers at be that march into my nation as if its their second home. I'm tired of it! In order to make this stop once and for all we need to bare our fangs and bite down hard. To show them the might of the Rain and protect our country." Hanzo-sama says.

"WAR is coming no matter how you feel! The only question is will you fight or coward begging before your killed! " Hanzo-sama says.

A man looking down at his balled fist is inspired by his leaders words and says. Fight! "This must be Hanzo-sama's Will of Rain!" He pumps his fist in the air declaring to fight.

Fight! A Jonin in the front row ready to serve his country, I'm pretty sure the only thing he has left in this world is his little sister.

Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!

Soon the entire room is filled with patriotic cries to protect their loved ones. Fight! I shout as I can't help but say to myself. Fuyo thinks back.

'It's been 5 months since the war between Ame and the three opposing nations started attacking us.' Fuyo recalls back thinking.

'As a Genin that lasted this long into the war I was eventually promoted to Chunin. But on the day of my promotion, I was given the task of eliminating Konoha spy's that infiltrated the village and got the current position of Lord Hanzo-sama.' Fuyo recalls back thinking.

'The group of Konoha chunin are skilled, showing the difference between Ame and the strongest nation. The Leaf ninjas were able to out pace us, with my team losing site of them. As my commander is about to call off the search I speak up.' Fuyo recalls back thinking.

Wait captain I can use my sensing techniques to find the enemy! Fuyo says to the commander. 'The man looked shock but gave me a nod.' Fuyo recalls back thinking.

I plug two fingers into the mud and close my eyes. My vision is black but like an ember I can see the signatures of the Konoha team. Now with their chakra signature tracked I point

"4 o'clock, that direction, they've slowed down." Fuyo says with narrowed eyes.

'The commander is impressed, one of my best friends since childhood, Hotaru complements my skills Infront of everyone making me look away in embarrassment. In the next moment our captain snaps us back into focus and he head out to confront Konoha. We manage to ambush them because we know the terrain more than they ever could. Managing to kill 4 out of the team of 11. I sigh in relief as it looks like we've won, with enough prisoners to get some information from the enemy.' Fuyo recalls thinking this is when it all started to go wrong.

'Then I hear it.' I think.

*Boom* *Boom* *Boom*

'The bodies of three of my comrades was destroyed sending their body parts everywhere.' Fuyo thinks back.

'When we turned around, I saw it.' Fuyo thinks back.

"Water Release: Wild Water Wave!"

'Something I never thought I would see happened like a horror movie, the Jonin with the little sister I remember seeing in the marketplace attack us. Instantly killing two more of our comrades. The commander is the quickest to recover.' Fuyo thinks back.

"He's a traitor!" We must not let him leave, or he will do irreparable damage to the village. "Defensive Formation 8!" The commander shouts out, with the strongest being the captain facing off against the traitor Jonin while we face the Konoha Chunin. Even the Konoha Chunin looked on at the surprising turn of events in confusion.

"Why Ishiki! Why would you turn your back on the village, your home!" Says the commander.

"Pfff. Why you ask? Isn't it obvious the Leaf gave me a better deal!" The Traitor Ame Jonin named Ishiki says.

"I worked my ass off for this village and for what, to us to get involve in this stupid war. After all the progress we've made with Hanzo-sama it means nothing if a bigger country can take it away on a whim. Hanzo is strong, but what about the rest of us. In war the side with superior numbers always win. If it was against one nation then I wouldn't feel the need to act but three at the same time is suicide. We're better off leaving and becoming missing-nin or hiding away at a small nation away from these conflicts."

"Ryūsui you know I have a sister. She's growing up into a young woman. She's more valuable than anything in this world to me. How do you expect me to tell her she has to live off of 1 meal a day. How do you expect me to tell her to live in a home that could be destroyed at anytime."

'I know that wasn't the time to think about this stuff, but the guy has a point.' Fuyo thinks back.

"Huh!! Answer me! Why do we have to be the ones to suffer, what future is there here!" The Traitor Ame Jonin named Ishiki says.

"The Hidden Leaf offered me and her asylum. Even if its rough for a bit and we're considered a poor family that's fine. As the poorest family there is the richest family here." The Traitor Ame Jonin named Ishiki says.

"After 10 minutes of combat, we somehow managed to kill them down to five more Leaf shinobi. Leaving just 2 Leaf Chunin and the traitor Jonin Ishiki. With everyone tired and battered." The Traitor Ame Jonin named Ishiki says.

*Whoosh *Whoosh* Whoosh*

'20 Leaf Reinforcements arrived, making the 15 of us tense up as we knew these guys were just a strong as the group we just fought. The lead man then speaks to one of the leaf chunin we just fought.' Fuyo thinks.

"Did you get scroll?" Says the Anbu Leaf ninja.

"Yes Koga-san." Says one of the remaining Konoha ninja we fought.

"Good." Says the Anbu Leaf ninja.

'My commander was visibly shaken as he knew what they were talking about. Apparently, the leaf shinobi had the poison formula for Hazno-san's poison. Turning this from a B rank mission to SS rank.' Fuyo thinks.

'You did well Ishiki says the man known as Koga. And don't worry we'll take care of your sister. With Koga facing us while turning away from Ishiki, patting his shoulder for reassurance.' Fuyo remembers seeing.

'Ishiki loses the tension he's been carrying and lets out a tearful thanks. *Slash* Then I heard the splashing sound of a body hitting the mud. Koga kills Ishiki with a kunai in the back of the head.' Fuyo remembers seeing.

"As if I would cooperate with a traitor. Once a traitor always a traitor. How could I sleep soundly at night if I have to worry about what you may do." Koga says.

'I learned right there just what the five great nations think of us, lord Hanzo was right, we're nothing but Cattel to them.' Fuyo thinks back.

"Yanagikage-san did you take care of his sister to silence her." Koga says.

"Of course, sir, she'll never see the light of day ever again. Man, I swear civilian girls break too easily. I didn't even get to have too much fun with her before she broke. Honestly, they just can't compare with Kunoichi's." Yanagikage says while rubbing his hands.

"Geez you and your dirty habits, I hope you at least cleaned up. I don't want the Hokage on my ass about his humanitarian policy." Koga says.

"Disgusting." I couldn't help and mutter.

'So, this is Betrayal. I know Ishiki was a traitor, but he was a good person who cared about his sister. So, to treat him and the person he treasured the most like this is so callus.' Fuyo thinks back.

"ISHIKI!! YOU MONSTERS!!" The captain erupts, shedding tears for his friend and his family.

"Alright men fall back!" Commander Ryūsui yells, still trying to make a rational decision and to not let his emotions take over.

"Oh no you don't! Don't let them retreat!" Yells Leaf Jonin Koga.

'Eventually we lead them into an open area away from all trees, that has plenty of rock dunes. Almost as if I was stalked by that man, Yanagikage. I was attacked once I ran out of chakra and subsequently captured.' Fuyo thinks back on the situation.
