There was a long silence that fell upon us. It felt like a very heavy blanket had been drapped on us, pinning our mouths shut from speaking.
'I knew it.' I thought in defeat, 'she pities me-'
"Pft." I looked up at her, only to encounter her laughing hard at me. "What are you talking about?" She heaved a sigh.
"Isn't that what friends are for?" She asked back, and I almost chocked on my breath.
'Friends?' I repeated the word in my mind in disbelief, 'Me? A friend?'
"Friends defend each others honor and are always there for each other."
"That's true." I agreed. "But, why me? I keep putting you in trouble, and making things worse for you. So why..." She stared strangely at me, as she sat back down.
"Because, you're the only one who saw me differently." She responded.
"What?-"
"It doesn't matter. If you didn't care, you wouldn't have come over to join me." She grabbed hold of my shoulder. "Remeber, I didn't get into a fight. We got into a fight. That's why we're here." She smiled down at me, whereas my eyes swelled with tears.
I turned my face away to wipe them clean. "You're too kind, Jenna." I acknowledged with gratitude.
"That's what friends are for, isn't it?" She laughed, and I smiled back at her. "I don't pity you. I admire your strength and endurance. That's what I like about you."
"I'm not strong." I disagreed, "I'm a loser who can't even defend her friend's honor."
"Don't say that. You're stronger than you think, Navier." She cheered on, and we hugged each other. Not long after, the teacher came in, and the time for our detention soon elapsed.
When we got out, school was already over, so we decided to walk home together; holding hands and laughing as we crossed the streets.
Three years after our friendship, finally in highschool, we made a new friend; he was a new transfer student. His name was Jerry, and he was a real softie. He was really friendly, and his cute face and tall physic brought him instant popularity.
The reason why he wanted to become friends with us, was uncertain, until he too got into a fight with one of the school bully for spreading false rumors about us, and ever since that incident, we became friends. He even lived close to our neighborhood.
We would take the school bus together, or even walk home, together. The three of us were always together. And I seemed to notice that Jenna had a huge crush on him. It surprised me, but it also made me happy as well, she deserved it.
So I decided to play Cupid. "You like Jerry, don't you?" It was on the weekened, and she came over to spend it with me at my place.
"W-what?!" She asked, startled like a thief caught in the act. "Where did you get that idea?" She blushed hard, between stutters.
I couldn't help but laugh. It was such a surprise to me that the thought almost seemed impossible to accept. Jenna, who was the tall girl, and sister figure I have finally grown close to.
Jenna, who would go to war for me, all in the name of defending my honor. It was this same Jenna that was now in front of me- a blushing mess of her own revelation.
'When did this happen?' I starred at her, as she bashfully played with her long hair.
"Do you really like him that much?" I asked carefully, just to be certain that my plans wouldn't make a mess of things.
"Y-yes." She answered.
"Since when?"
"I don't know." She stated, "it just, happened." Oh, she was already head over heels in love with him, alright. I could tell that she fell at first sight.
Jenna never pays attention to these kind of things, that's why I'm her wing man. She and Jerry were always together.
"That's alright, there's no need to feel ashamed." I coaxed.
"But what if, he doesn't feel the same way? Navier, what will I do?" I could see the panic in her eyes as she uttered those words.
"It'll be alright, I will make sure of it." I assured her, "he'd be a fool to say no."
"What should I do?" She asked with her cute face blooming in anticipation. I felt like moses, about to cross my person over the red sea.
"You just have to follow my lead." I adviced, and we started practicing. I can recall correctly, it was on a sunday morning when Jenna finally took the courage to confess to him about her feelings.
We had gone over to his house, only to find out that they were moving out. When he sighted us approaching, he looked gloomy.
"What's going on?" I asked, slightly doubtful about the circumstance that I beheld with my own eyes.
"We're moving." He replied in dismay, not looking at us.
"Where? On vacation? Out of town?" I could hear the panic and worry in Jenna's voice as she looked at his face.
"Out of the city." He mumbled and I didn't miss the way her hand shook in defeat. "They, want me to study abroad." He explained.
"O-oh, I see. Congratulations." She stammered. "When will you come back?" Her voice almost shook in anxiety.
"I...don't know. We're heading out to the airport." His answer seemed to have been making her nauseous.
"Jerry, lets go!" His mother's voice rang out from behind us, and his face paled in defeat.
"Safe travels." We wished him, and hugged him goodbye. He threw us one last look, before turning his back to us, walking away in Woe. The engine got pumped to life, and drove away, as we gave a sad wave at his departure.
Jenna slumped onto the ground, tears had already streamed down her face in grief and disbelief at the way her first love had ended, even without her uttering any word of confession.
She sobbed bitterly, and I hugged her, consoling her with words I felt she needed the most. "I'm sorry, Jenna." My grip intensified, "I'm so sorry."
