Chapter 2 - The discovery

I have to admit, my mother was practically a superhuman. She'd carry me around almost all day on her back just so I wouldn't wander off and get into trouble. Sure, I had a nanny, but let's be real—there's no substitute for a mother. No one can ever take her place.

One day, though, she picked me up out of the blue, slung me onto her back, tied me up securely, and grabbed some money. As she did all this, my mind raced. *Wait… I'm barely born. Are my parents already divorced? Where is she taking me?*

Turns out, she just wanted to take me out to see the town.

Of all the things I'd expected, finding out that our house was practically isolated was not one of them. There wasn't a single house nearby, and it took my mother a solid fifteen minutes just to reach the main town. Fifteen minutes might not sound like much, but strapped to her back, it felt like an eternity.

Anyway, we finally reached the town, and…

*Glang, glang*—the clanking of heavy armor.

*Thud, thud*—loud, booming footsteps.

What the—*what is this world?!*

There were people towering over seven feet tall, some lugging massive axes, others draped in robes with staffs in hand. Were ancient times really like this? How could anyone be that huge? How could they casually carry such heavy weapons? And what's with all the staffs?

Questions swarmed my mind faster than I could make sense of them.

Is this…really the past? I don't remember anything like this. What is this place?

For ancient times, it looked oddly modern. Not like there were cars or buses, but still—it didn't have that old-world vibe I'd expected. I thought the town would look more like a slum or, at the very least, give off some medieval feel.

But no, the shops were made of solid concrete, with signs displaying symbols like `^¤®™]£`…wait, *what the hell is this writing?* Just trying to read it was giving me a mental workout. I'd expected something simple like `ÿœ` or `θπ`, but this `^¤®™]£`? What does that even mean? I'd never seen anything like it in my life!

Anyway, back to the surroundings: concrete buildings, strange symbols, floating pots, and—hold on, *floating pots?!* What kind of Doctor Strange type of ShĮt is this?

Was I really in the past? Or had I somehow landed in an alien world…with magic?

-

Now it all makes sense…*this isn't the real world.* No wonder Grandpa's so strong—this place doesn't work on logic like my old world did. It's something entirely different. And that's…*so cool!*

I even managed to pick up on the currency, which, surprisingly, was pretty straightforward:

100 bronze = 1 copper

100 copper = 1 silver

100 silver = 1 gold

100 gold = 1 Aldamite

100 Aldamite = 1 Celestium

It's actually kind of simple!

Anyway, my mother seemed to know her way around, stopping to pick up a few things: medicine, diapers, groceries…you know, all the essentials.

Oh, and if you're wondering what the medicine's for? It's for my dysentery, obviously—not some pregnancy prevention pills! This isn't *Mushoku Tensei*, alright? (Take it as a joke).

Once we got home, a thought suddenly hit me…

From what I've overheard, my mother's name is Haruka, my father's name is Shinji, and my grandpa's name is Shiro. But…what's *my* name?

Grandpa always calls me "brat," Father calls me "honey bun" (whatever that means), and Mother calls me "honey," "sweetheart," or "baby."

Am I…still nameless?

Yep…guess they ran out of ideas. But still, there are *way* too many mysteries around here. For one, I don't even know our family name. And then there's our freakishly huge house, the isolation from the rest of town, the endless swords everywhere…

Oh, right! I forgot to mention that part—it's actually kind of normal, even by real-world standards. So, I'm guessing my father or grandpa must be a swordsman or something…which is pretty damn cool!

Well, as you might've guessed, I was a total loner in my old life. Played games all day, watched anime—wait, no, *wrong*! Surprisingly, in my whole life, I only actually watched…*three* anime. And only one of those even had magic in it!

So if my Intel Core i69 brain is recalling correctly, to use magic, you need…*mana.* Ugh, just thinking about it is making my head hurt.
