Chapter 83: Discovery
The next day, early morning.
Baishi had just finished washing up when a knock came at the door.
"Come in."
The door creaked open, and Kamimura Takashi entered carrying a food box.
At that moment, Baishi's ears twitched slightly, and he suddenly looked in a specific direction. His gaze seemed to penetrate the walls, observing something outside. After a moment, he retracted his gaze and muttered, "So, they've finally come..."
"What?" Takashi asked, puzzled.
"Nothing," Baishi replied, shaking his head. He didn't share that Takashi had been followed.
Yes, someone had been tailing Kamimura Takashi.
The pursuers moved with such light steps that, in the past, Baishi might not have noticed. However, the day before, his Enhanced Senses had advanced to Level V, significantly boosting his hearing. Now, even the faintest of movements reached his ears.
From the sound of their footsteps, Baishi judged there were four individuals, and all of them were likely ninjas.
As for their identities…
While he hadn't yet confronted them, the possibilities were limited. They were most likely from one of the three factions, with the Mist Village being the prime suspect.
"Well, let's wait and see," Baishi thought, snorting inwardly. He wasn't in a hurry to act and instead sat down to enjoy his breakfast as usual.
As for Kamimura Takashi, Baishi kept him in the dark to avoid alarming their trackers. After delivering breakfast, Takashi left as usual.
Hearing his retreating footsteps, Baishi's ears twitched again. He confirmed the four pursuers hadn't left and stayed nearby, further validating his suspicions.
Clearly, they were here for him.
---
Outside the wooden house.
Perched in the branches of a large tree, four cloaked figures in masks observed the scene below.
These individuals were none other than the Mist Village's Anbu Black Ops, who had infiltrated Moon Island the previous night.
After confirming that the Third Patrol Team had been ambushed by a mysterious third party, their actions became more cautious.
This vigilance paid off when they discovered Kamimura Takashi and the other pirates. However, they refrained from acting recklessly and chose to surveil instead.
As they watched the wooden house in the distance, one of the Anbu whispered, "Should I try sensing the chakra inside?"
The leader, after a moment's thought, shook his head. "Not yet. Our mission is reconnaissance. Avoid alarming the target at all costs."
He continued, "From now on, Kurokaku, you'll pair with Rei. I'll team up with Ren. We'll take turns monitoring."
Despite the leader's young voice, the other three followed his orders without hesitation, clearly trusting his judgment.
Two members then relocated, stealthily finding a new vantage point roughly ten meters away.
---
Time passed slowly, yet the wooden house remained quiet.
Even the most patient of the Anbu grew restless after two hours. Normally, anyone inside would have stepped out after breakfast, yet nothing stirred.
Regrouping, one Anbu suggested, "Should we let Rei sense inside? It's been too quiet—maybe no one's there?"
Before anyone could respond, a voice suddenly interrupted them.
"Are you looking for me?"
The four Anbu froze.
A cloud of smoke erupted at their feet, obscuring their vision.
Swish, swish, swish!
Dozens of shuriken shot out from the smoke, streaking toward the source of the voice.
The Anbu reacted instantly. In perfect sync, they scattered in different directions, vanishing behind tree trunks like specters.
"Quick reflexes," Baishi muttered, watching their retreat with faint admiration.
With a wave of his hand, he summoned four vibrant green vines.
The vines snaked through the air, piercing the smoke and swatting aside the incoming shuriken, before shooting toward the fleeing Anbu.
Behind the tree trunks.
The Anbu barely had time to land before the vines appeared, twisting around to pursue them.
"Damn it!"
Startled, the Anbu reacted swiftly. Those skilled in taijutsu ducked low and darted away, while others relied on Substitution Jutsu to escape.
To their credit, the Mist Anbu were competent. Despite being caught off guard, they avoided immediate capture.
But for Baishi, this was only the beginning.
Before they could regroup, Baishi vanished.
This wasn't the Flying Thunder God Technique, but pure, unadulterated speed—a result of his enhanced physical stats.
After his Strength and Agility surpassed 90 points, Baishi found that short bursts of speed were often more effective than teleportation.
High-speed movement offered flexibility, and more importantly, it allowed him to unleash his full physical potential.
Teleportation was excellent for positioning, but it rarely allowed him to capitalize on momentum. With sheer speed, however, he could hit harder and faster than ever before.
As one Anbu, identified as Kurokaku, hesitated, Baishi zeroed in on him.
Rei, the sensory ninja of the group, sensed the threat immediately. "Kurokaku, watch out!" he shouted.
But Kurokaku had already fallen into Baishi's trap.
A burly figure, Kurokaku was clearly a taijutsu specialist. His first instinct was to meet Baishi's charge head-on, raising his short blade in defense.
To him, countering Baishi's attack seemed the natural choice.
Unfortunately, Baishi's speed was far beyond his comprehension.
As Kurokaku swung his blade, Baishi smirked.
"Too slow."
With a burst of speed, Baishi sidestepped, disappearing from Kurokaku's view. Before the Anbu could react, Baishi reappeared behind him.
