The following day, Li Wei found herself facing a new challenge. She had no idea what to expect from her new life, but one thing was certain: she would have to learn to navigate Zhang Yichen's world. He had mentioned that he would be away for a few weeks, but soon after, he placed her in a situation she hadn't anticipated: a public event where she would have to appear by his side.
"It's just a formality," he had said, more like an order than a suggestion. Li Wei knew this was her first test—to be his wife, without question, in front of the eyes of everyone.
The event was held in a luxurious ballroom, with golden lights reflecting the elegance of the room. Li Wei felt out of place, dressed in an elegant black dress that matched the seriousness of the event, but couldn't hide her discomfort. She knew all eyes were on her.
Zhang Yichen arrived at the event with his usual stoic demeanor, his commanding presence filling the room. He was surrounded by executives, all discussing strategies and business deals. When Li Wei walked in at his side, no one seemed to care about the young wife silently standing next to him. She observed attentively, trying to learn from the gestures and words of those around her, but Yichen's gaze never wavered from the business at hand.
As the night progressed, Li Wei realized that her presence there was, in fact, a formality. There was no affection in his posture, and she felt like a decorative piece beside him. But somehow, she knew this was her role—a role she would accept, for the sake of her family.
When dinner was coming to an end, Yichen approached Li Wei with an expression that she couldn't quite read.
"You're doing well," he commented, the first time he had spoken to her more casually during the evening. "If you keep this up, the coming days will be easier."
Li Wei just nodded, unsure of what to say. Her mind was filled with unasked questions, but she knew now wasn't the time to confront him.
