Chapter 28: On the Beach
Isla suggested to Daniel that they spend the day at the beach, a place she had missed dearly, especially her friend, the seal Iris. She often wondered to herself, "How is she doing? How does she spend most of her day?" The thought almost brought her to tears, overwhelmed by the longing for Iris and for the place where she had grown up, where she spent the most beautiful days of her life. Daniel sensed her feelings and hugged her tightly, smiling as he said:
"Don't worry, my love. We will go to the beach and enjoy our day together."
A bright smile returned to her angelic face, and she embraced him, kissing him without stopping, like a child delighted by a new toy. Without waiting, she hurried to change her clothes, as did Daniel. He left his bed, tidied himself up, and they both decided to seize this moment, knowing they might not have the chance again. She hopped into his car, nearly flying with joy, as if the sea had sent its breezes to her before she even arrived, telling her it would always be with her, no matter how far she traveled.
On the way there, the raindrops began to fall from the sky. She couldn't contain her happiness, remembering how she used to play on the beach with her dog and Iris, the seal who never left her side. The raindrops grew heavier, scattering like pearls, washing her face. She was used to it, but Daniel, who had only recently started to recover, feared that the cold might bring back the troublesome cold he had been struggling with. He apologized to Isla, asking if they could return home, but Isla insisted they stay. She begged him to move away from the beach, suggesting they sit in a café across from the sea, so she could still see it from afar and enjoy the sound of the waves. That would bring joy and bliss to her spirit.
They sat at a round table in a café by the sea, the rain continuing to pour, now even heavier. The waves seemed more furious, crashing against the shore with a sound that could be heard from their place. The sea was wild, rebellious, eager to embrace anyone who threw themselves into its arms, ready to devour them like a ready meal.
Isla contented herself with enjoying the scene and the peaceful contemplation. Daniel moved closer to her, seeking warmth despite the heavy coat he was wearing. He whispered in her ear:
"My love, I promise we will visit your island soon, so don't be sad."
