Izla felt slightly uneasy; she had just moved to a place completely unfamiliar to her. Everything seemed so different, so foreign. This sudden change was entirely unexpected. She had grown accustomed to spending most of her time with her seal, Iris, and her dog by the sea—where the vast open space and the quiet beach were hers alone. No crowds, no noise, just peace and solitude.
Now, how was she supposed to live in this strange new land? She was certain she would feel alienated and lonely. If it weren't for Daniel, who had started to find a way into her heart, she wouldn't have been able to endure staying. She would have returned to her homeland without a second thought.
She lay on the bed, running her hands across it, wondering if she could sleep that night. Perhaps insomnia would keep her company, leaving her a prey to the memories she left behind on the island. As she predicted, she couldn't close her eyes. The bed was comfortable, and the room was lovely, with a window overlooking the garden—everything exuded a sense of comfort and calm. Yet, the loss of her father and the absence of Iris left a deep wound in her heart, making it impossible for her to enjoy the moment.
Morning came, with sunlight streaming through her window, accompanied by the cheerful chirping of birds flitting between the garden trees. Izla threw off her blanket and rushed to her window, opening it wide. She didn't want to miss the sunrise or the birds' melodies. Perhaps this new life would grow on her, helping to ease the sorrow she hadn't anticipated.
She stood for a while, admiring the beautiful natural scene, until she heard a knock on the door. She granted permission to enter, and it was the housemaid, asking her to come downstairs and join her aunt for breakfast. Izla didn't hesitate. She went to the bathroom, washed her face, and changed her clothes. Moments later, she was seated with her aunt.
Her aunt greeted her warmly, saying,
"Good morning, my dear. You can't imagine how happy I am to have you here with me. My life has felt so empty since the loss of my only son."
Izla replied,
"It's an honor to live with you, Aunt. I hope I can bring joy to your life and ease your loneliness."
Her aunt smiled and said,
"You truly are a kind and well-mannered girl. I'll always be here for you, my dear."
Izla felt somewhat reassured. The two enjoyed their breakfast, chatting away, until the phone rang. Who could it be? Izla wondered as her aunt got up to answer the call.
