The bodies of the fallen lay in the morgue, while numerous injured soldiers were treated in the medical room, having been brought back from the battlefield.
The second lesson in experiencing the harsh reality of war was about to unfold here.
After making necessary preparations, the two children followed Shinki to inspect the ward.
They saw many wounded soldiers—some in relatively good condition with intact limbs, while others were severely injured with missing arms or legs.
"Quickly, tell Master Shinki to send this patient to the operating room!"
The medical room was the busiest place in the camp. It never quieted as long as injured soldiers were brought in.
"Ah! My hand, my hand!"
A soldier with his right hand nearly severed, attached only by a small piece of flesh, was rushed to the operating room. Blood trailed across the floor as Nawaki and Minato Namikaze followed Shinki, looking helpless.
"Stay calm,"
Shinki raised his hand and delivered a light knock to the soldier's head, causing him to lose consciousness. He then swiftly cut the nerves in the man's arm to stop the bleeding, checked for toxins, and, after confirming none, began cleaning and reconnecting the almost-detached limb through surgery.
Once the arm was reattached, Shinki used medical ninjutsu to accelerate healing and stabilize the wound with a splint.
After the procedure, he instructed the nurse to transfer the patient to the ward.
"Gulp…"
Shinki heard the sound of nervous swallowing as he removed his gloves. He turned to see two young faces looking anxious and bewildered.
The bloody scene in the operating room was impactful in a way that even the morgue couldn't match—this was where the line between life and death was constantly negotiated.
Shinki washed his hands and guided the children out of the operating room.
"The soldier just now was fortunate. He made it back to camp in time, and his arm was salvageable. After some recovery, he'll be as good as new."
The children glanced at the other soldiers in the ward with broken limbs.
The ninja world's medical techniques were advanced, enabling procedures that would have been nearly impossible elsewhere. With skilled use of medical ninjutsu, most operations had a high success rate.
Shinki, drying his hands with a towel, spoke somberly, "It's a blessing to survive a battlefield injury. While many injuries can be treated, lost limbs are rarely replaced. Some soldiers return only to face the possibility of amputation."
"The medical room saves lives, but the psychological toll it takes can be as heavy as the morgue. Watch and learn, and understand the reality."
The sight of poisoned soldiers sent a shiver down Nawaki's spine. Their suffering was horrifying, more so than even those with severed limbs. Poisoned bodies in the morgue left a particularly stark impression.
Minato broke the tension. "Sensei, will we have training?"
"Yes," Shinki replied. "Working in the morgue and assisting here is to build character, but training cannot be neglected. We'll start tomorrow."
While character building was important, so was honing their strength.
"For today…" Shinki paused, "just observe and help where needed. Tomorrow, we begin training."
Nawaki and Minato's eyes brightened. With Shinki's assurance, they felt reinvigorated, eagerly helping in the medical room.
The next morning, Shinki prepared breakfast and yanked the two boys out of their beds.
"Is it morning already?" Minato rubbed his eyes, waking quickly. Nawaki yawned, clearly wanting more sleep.
"No time to rest," Shinki said. "You have two minutes for breakfast, then we start. No exceptions."
"Here I come!"
Hearing the word "breakfast," Nawaki shot up and hurried to get dressed.
The three of them squatted at the doorway, eating from large bowls of noodles.
"Why are we eating at the door?" Nawaki mumbled, his cheeks full.
"Because it tastes better this way."
"Really?" Nawaki's skeptical expression was met with silence.
After breakfast, Nawaki looked at Shinki, hoping not to be overshadowed by Minato.
Shinki gestured to him, "How many water-style jutsu do you know?"
Nawaki's eyes lit up. "I know a few, I can—"
"Enough. Just keep practicing them, focusing on compressing the water. That's your training."
The Senju clan's traits were clear in Nawaki, with his strong water and earth chakra nature. His large chakra reserves were an advantage.
To cultivate Nawaki, Shinki needed only to push him to master water-style techniques, physical training, and movement skills. He hoped Nawaki could mirror a simplified version of Senju Tobirama.
With that path, Nawaki could grow to be a formidable force in the ninja world.
