Chapter 10 - Apology

Robinson is a good doctor who is dedicated and responsible. He comes to treat Deng Wen Yao on time every day and pays attention to Deng Wen Yao's injuries.

Liang Yao could see that Dr. Robinson was not just putting on a show; he was very responsible for every patient.

"Hello, Dr. Robinson, I'd like to invite you to have some tea."

Deng Ying held a cup of freshly brewed hot tea and greeted Robinson in the simple English she had just learned.

Dr. Robinson responded with a warm smile, thanked Deng Ying, said their tea was delicious, and tentatively asked if he could sell him some tea.

Deng Ying had just learned English for a few days and did not understand what Dr. Robinson said. She stood there in a daze, pulling at her sleeves, at a loss as to what to do.

"Get two packets of good tea for Dr. Robinson."

Liang Yao said this to Deng Ying, and after hearing this, Deng Ying quickly brought over two better tea bricks as fast as a rabbit.

"Mr. Deng's injuries have almost healed." Robinson said as he packed up his medicine box. "The bandits in this area have become more and more rampant in the past few days. In just one week, eighteen people have died at the hands of these bandits."

"These bandits are really despicable. We should be more vigilant." Liang Yao strongly agreed with this.

"That's one aspect, but our strength is too weak. Not to mention the ordinary bandits, there are more than 40 deserters alone, or even more. They are not ordinary bandits, they are professional soldiers who have participated in wars. Sacramento is the largest gold mining area nearby, and I think they will soon set their sights on this place." Dr. Robinson's words had hidden meaning.

"Dr. Robinson, just say whatever you want to say. There's no need to beat around the bush. I'm all ears." Liang Yao heard the hidden meaning in Robinson's words.

"I heard that you have a good relationship with Sheriff Flagg. Can you visit Sheriff Flagg and have the California Mounted Police stationed in Sacramento to maintain law and order?" Dr. Robinson expressed his thoughts.

He has given gold to Flagg several times, how could their relationship be bad?

Liang Yao smiled and said, "Dr. Robinson and Sheriff Flagg also have a good relationship."

Robinson smiled bitterly and shook his head. "Sheriff Flagg only respects my medical skills, not me as a person. He is a person who does not do anything without profit. Our Boston company has not found much gold in recent days. Even the livelihood of our team has become a big problem."

Robinson watched with envy as the Deng brothers took out the wet felt collecting pads from the bottom of the ore washing trough and easily collected the fine gold particles from the collecting pads.

He had to admit that the entire Boston company team had underestimated these intelligent Orientals. They had successfully panned a large amount of gold, while many members of the Boston company still pinned their hopes on the so-called high-tech gold washing machine.

Robinson has realized that the so-called high-tech gold washing machine may be just a lie. The salesperson exaggerated its function, and the engineer who designed it was either trying to cheat money or knew nothing about gold mining.

Seeing Liang Yao remained silent, Robinson did not go into the issue any further. Liang Yao was just a gold digger like them and had no obligation to provide security services for Sacramento.

"Can I have our engineer come over and learn from you how to make and use this tool?" Robinson asked, pointing to their ore washing trough.

He realized that if they wanted to find gold, they had to give up the high-tech gold washing machine and learn gold panning techniques from these smart Orientals.

Perhaps the rumors about the ignorance and barbarism of that distant Eastern country were just a lie, and the hypocritical British loved to fabricate lies in their favor in order to justify their aggressive behavior.

The same is true for the United States. In the recent Mexican-American War, Robinson also believed that the United States was the unjust party.

"Of course, I won't owe you a favor. I can give the blueprints to your engineers, but Boston Company must apologize to me and my compatriots and admit that your gold mining technology is not as good as ours." News about gold mining technology in the gold mining area spread very quickly. The ore washing trough is not a high-tech thing. Liang Yao can't hide it even if he wants to. It's better to do a favor and give it to Robinson. Liang Yao has already started to prepare to upgrade his gold mining technology, and he doesn't intend to only use the low-threshold technology of ore washing trough for gold mining.

"I apologize to you for the rude behavior and reckless language of the Boston company members." Dr. Robinson apologized to Liang Yao very sincerely.

Liang Yao shook his head: "As far as I know, it was not Mr. Robinson who made the rude remarks that day. Mr. Robinson does not have to pay for the wrong words and deeds of others."

"I understand. Please wait a moment."

Robinson said goodbye to Liang Yao first. After a while, Captain Weber of the Boston Company came to Liang Yao's camp with their engineers and several core members.

The previous contempt and arrogance were no longer on their faces, and they had to admit that these Orientals were much better at panning for gold than they were.

"On behalf of Boston Company, I apologize to you, Mr. Liang."

Weber, who was already middle-aged, was respectful to Liang Yao just like he was to his superiors in the army, which made Weber feel very uncomfortable. The young man in front of him looked even younger than his children.

However, in order for the Boston Company to find more gold, Weber bowed his head and admitted his mistake to Liang Yao.

"Don't apologize to me, sir. Apologize to me and my compatriots." Liang Yao corrected very seriously.

Weber had no choice but to take the members of the Boston company to apologize to Liang Yao and the others, and his tone became more sincere.

Deng Yan and Liang Yao's cousins had just learned English for a few days and knew that the foreigner's "sorry" meant sorry. They realized that the foreigner had given in, and their backs straightened a little.

"Here are the blueprints for the ore washing tank, but I will charge you a royalty for 1,000 ounces of gold."

Berry from Boston Company couldn't wait to take the drawings from Liang Yao's hand, but Liang Yao pulled the drawings back.

"We don't have 1,000 ounces of gold. Can you make it cheaper?" Weber hesitated and pleaded.

Liang Yao did not intend to make any concessions on the price: "As long as we have the ore washing tank, with the manpower of your team, it will only take a few days to obtain 1,000 ounces of gold."

"Okay, I'll give you 350 ounces of gold first. This is all we have. For the remaining gold, I will sign a contract with you on behalf of the Boston Company and pay you immediately after I find the remaining 650 ounces of gold," said Weber.

Liang Yao agreed to Weber's proposal. Weber asked someone to bring 350 ounces of gold and then signed a contract with Liang Yao.

The engineer from the Boston company couldn't help but beat his chest and stamp his feet after receiving the blueprints. He had always thought that these Oriental gold-mining tools must have hidden secrets, but he didn't expect them to be such simple things.

This kind of thing can be made by any carpenter, but they paid 1,000 ounces of gold for it!

After the Boston company left, Liang Yao began to think about expanding the team.

A small team of a few people could no longer give him a sense of security. Robinson was right. Perhaps asking Flagg to send some mounted police to Sacramento could improve the public security here, at least around his own camp.

Of course, it would cost gold to get the mounted police to Sacramento, but it was money well spent. If they were robbed by the bandits, the loss of gold would be a minor matter, but the loss of their lives would be a major one.
