Chapter 64 - Chapter 65: The Warning

Jake sat in his dimly lit room, the artifact resting on the desk before him. The cryptic markings etched into its surface seemed alive, pulsating faintly under the weak glow of his desk lamp. He leaned closer, running his fingers over the strange symbols. Each touch sent a chill up his spine, but he couldn't look away.

The events of the previous night played over in his mind—the whispers, the glow, the ghostly figure in the cemetery. It all pointed to one undeniable conclusion: Liam was part of something dark, something dangerous. And Lisa? She was tangled in it, too.

Jake's grip on the artifact tightened as his resolve solidified. He wasn't just going to sit by and watch this happen. He had to protect Lisa, the town—everyone. Even if it meant stepping into the shadows himself.

---

By morning, Jake had a plan. He spent the day scribbling messages on scraps of paper, each one more ominous than the last. "Beware the darkness," one read. "An evil force threatens us all," said another. He wrote furiously, pouring his fear and suspicion into each note.

When the sun dipped below the horizon, Jake set out under the cover of night. The streets were quiet, the townsfolk tucked safely in their homes. He moved swiftly, slipping from shadow to shadow, pinning his warnings to doors, lampposts, and bulletin boards.

He worked until his fingers were stiff from the cold, his heart racing with a mix of fear and determination. When he finally stepped back to admire his handiwork, he felt a flicker of satisfaction. The town would know. They would see the danger and rise to face it.

---

Lisa, meanwhile, was unraveling.

The failed ritual had left her shaken and exhausted. Her body ached, her mind raced, and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching her.

She caught glimpses of movement in her peripheral vision—shadows darting between buildings, a flash of light behind her in the woods. She spun around more than once, heart pounding, but there was never anyone there.

The tension built with each passing day. Even the smallest sounds—a creak of the floorboards, the rustle of leaves—set her on edge. She tried to convince herself it was just her imagination, but the feeling wouldn't go away.

On the third night, she found the first note.

It was nailed to a lamppost outside the diner where she worked, scrawled in messy handwriting: "Beware the darkness. Protect the town or face the consequences."

Lisa froze, her stomach twisting in knots. The message felt personal, like it was meant for her. But how could anyone know? She glanced around, searching for the author, but the street was empty.

She tore the note down and shoved it into her bag, her mind racing. Who had written it? And how much did they know?

---

Jake wasn't finished.

He watched from the shadows as Lisa tore down his note, his heart aching at the sight of her fear. He didn't want to scare her, but she needed to understand. She needed to see what he saw.

He spent the next few nights ramping up his efforts, leaving more notes in more places. He avoided her workplace after the first note, instead targeting places she frequented—the grocery store, the park bench where she sometimes sat, even her mailbox.

Each time, he changed the wording slightly, hoping to get through to her:

"We know the truth."

"The danger is closer than you think."

"Protect the town or pay the price."

---

Lisa's paranoia reached a breaking point when she found the note on her front door.

It was late, and she was bone-tired as she approached her house. But the sight of the paper nailed to the wood stopped her in her tracks.

Her hands trembled as she pulled it free, her eyes scanning the words over and over: "We're watching you. Protect the town or pay the price."

A chill ran down her spine. She glanced over her shoulder, half-expecting to see someone lurking in the shadows. But the street was silent, the only sound the faint rustle of leaves in the wind.

Lisa's mind raced. Who was watching her? What did they want? And how much did they know about the necromancer, Liam, and everything else?

She stumbled inside, locking the door behind her and sinking to the floor. She couldn't do this alone anymore. But who could she trust?

As the night stretched on, Lisa sat in the dark, the note clutched tightly in her hand. She felt more alone than ever, the weight of her choices pressing down on her like a crushing tide.

And somewhere in the shadows, Jake watched, his heart heavy with guilt and determination. He was doing this for her, for the town. But he couldn't shake the feeling that he was running out of time.
