Chapter 10 - Realism and Loopholes

Idan stood in the centre of the village square, observing the ebb and flow of daily life around him. Each NPC moved with purpose, interacting with players and each other as though the world of Evo-Realm was their true home. It struck him how the villagers' routines and conversations felt dynamic, almost organic, rather than the repetitive cycles he'd come to expect from games.

The recent quests he'd completed had left him intrigued. He was starting to recognise that the NPCs weren't just tools for progression—they were, in a way, as lifelike as his fellow players. They responded not only to his actions but also to his intentions, rewarding him in ways that often went beyond the original quest rewards. He hadn't fully grasped it yet, but he felt he was close to understanding something unique about the game's mechanics.

He glanced over at the healer's hut, where Theren tended to villagers and apprentices alike. His reputation with Theren had grown considerably, the old healer even greeting him with a warmth that bordered on paternal. It was clear that each interaction had left an impression, and Idan began to wonder if he could push this dynamic even further.

As he entered the hut, Theren looked up, his eyes lighting with recognition. "Ah, Idan. Your assistance yesterday with the apprentices has been invaluable. Young Lina speaks highly of you."

Idan inclined his head respectfully. "I'm glad to be of help. But I was wondering…" He paused, choosing his words carefully. "Is there anything more I can do? I'd like to learn more about the healing arts—beyond the standard remedies and poultices."

Theren's gaze grew thoughtful, a slight smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Eager to deepen your knowledge, are you? There is much I could teach, but knowledge is earned through commitment." He glanced around, as though ensuring no one else was listening. "Tell me, Idan, would you be willing to undertake something a bit… unconventional?"

Idan's curiosity flared. This was exactly the kind of response he'd been hoping for—a glimpse into an aspect of the game that most players might overlook.

"Anything you need," he replied, keeping his tone respectful.

Theren nodded, his expression turning serious. "Very well. There is a particularly rare herb that grows deep in the forest, known as Moonshade Blossom. Its properties are potent, but it is guarded by creatures few dare to encounter. Bring me this herb, and I shall teach you methods unknown to most."

Idan's HUD flashed, indicating the new quest:

[Quest: The Moonshade Blossom]

Objective: Retrieve the rare Moonshade Blossom from the Darkwood forest.

Reward: Advanced Medic Techniques (Minor Combat Healing Skill)

The reward was more than he had expected—an advanced skill hinting at a combat application for his Medic abilities. Idan felt a surge of excitement. This was not something that appeared in the skill trees or standard rewards. It was something he'd earned by pushing the game's mechanics, by treating Theren as if he were a real mentor rather than just an NPC.

"Thank you, Theren. I'll return with the herb," Idan promised.

Theren nodded approvingly. "Be cautious, Idan. Moonshade grows where shadows linger."

As he left the hut, Idan couldn't help but feel a sense of pride. The quest wasn't just a simple fetch mission; it represented his growing understanding of Evo-Realm's depth, the realisation that he could influence the NPCs and obtain rewards hidden from the usual progression paths. He was beginning to see that the game's realism wasn't just cosmetic—it was a mechanic in itself, one that he was uniquely suited to exploit.

He journeyed to the outskirts of the forest, the naginata at his side as he scanned the area. The Darkwood forest was thick with mist and shadows, the trees twisted and knotted, their branches creating a maze of interwoven paths. The air grew colder as he ventured deeper, and he tightened his grip on the naginata, his senses heightened.

Activating Identify, he scanned his surroundings, seeking out anything unusual. It wasn't long before he noticed a faint shimmer to his left, half-hidden by a cluster of thick roots. Moving closer, he saw the distinctive silver-blue petals of the Moonshade Blossom, glowing faintly in the darkness.

Just as he reached for the herb, a low growl echoed through the clearing. He turned, spotting a pair of Shadowfang Wolves, their eyes gleaming with predatory intent. The creatures moved in unison, circling him with practised agility.

Idan tightened his stance, raising his naginata defensively. These creatures weren't as powerful as some of the foes he'd faced, but they were swift and cunning, their movements synchronised. He activated Cognitive Shield, focusing his mind as he prepared to fend them off.

The first wolf lunged, its fangs aimed at his arm. Idan sidestepped, swinging the naginata in a downward arc that struck the creature's flank, sending it sprawling. The second wolf charged immediately after, forcing him to pivot and deflect its attack with a sharp jab. His movements were deliberate, each strike calculated to keep the creatures at bay without overexerting himself.

After a tense exchange, he managed to subdue the wolves, their bodies dissolving into shimmering particles. He turned back to the Moonshade Blossom, carefully harvesting it and placing it in his inventory.

The journey back to the village was quiet, the forest gradually giving way to familiar paths. When he entered the healer's hut, Theren greeted him with a nod of approval.

"You have done well, Idan. The Moonshade Blossom is a rare find, and your willingness to brave the forest speaks to your dedication."

Theren held up his hand, and a faint glow appeared in his palm. "As promised, I will teach you a technique known to few Medics. This will allow you to channel healing energy not only to others but to yourself in combat—a skill that may prove invaluable."

A prompt appeared on Idan's HUD.

[Skill Unlocked: Minor Combat Healing]

Description: A healing ability that allows the user to restore a portion of their own health in combat, using energy to maintain stamina. Limited to use once per encounter.

Idan absorbed the information, realising the value of the skill he had just unlocked. It was more than just a useful ability—it was a testament to his growing understanding of Evo-Realm's unique mechanics. This wasn't something he'd earned through traditional levelling; it was the result of his interactions, his willingness to see the NPCs as real, to treat each quest as an opportunity for genuine connection.

"Thank you, Theren," he said, bowing his head in respect.

Theren smiled. "Your path as a healer has only begun, Idan. There is much you have yet to learn, and many places in this world where knowledge lies waiting. Seek it, and you will grow stronger than you can imagine."

As he left the hut, Idan's mind raced with possibilities. The game's realism was something he could exploit, a mechanic that went beyond standard gameplay. He began to wonder what other hidden paths lay within Evo-Realm, secrets that could be unlocked only through careful exploration and genuine engagement with the world around him.

For the first time, he felt a sense of true purpose—a path that was uniquely his, one that relied not just on power but on understanding, on seeing the world of Evo-Realm for what it truly was.

As he made his way through the village, he resolved to continue testing the boundaries, to see just how far he could push the game's realism. Because if he could unlock a skill like Combat Healing simply by interacting with an NPC, who knew what other hidden potential awaited him?
