Chapter 188: Secrets Unveiled
The night is quiet when Lin Yuer makes her way to the private chambers of her father's advisor, Master Zheng. She has known him for years, though their relationship has always been one of cautious respect. Master Zheng is older, his wisdom respected by many in the empire. If anyone can help her understand what is truly happening, it is him.
"Master Zheng," Lin Yuer greets him as she enters his chambers, her voice calm but carrying an undercurrent of urgency.
He looks up from his desk, his eyes sharp despite his age. "Ah, Your Majesty. I thought you might come."
"Why didn't you tell me about my father's letter? What did he mean by 'preparing myself'?" Lin Yuer demands.
Master Zheng sighs deeply, his gaze moving toward the window. "Your father was always one for cryptic warnings, but he was not wrong. There are forces at play, unseen and dangerous. Your reign, despite all its progress, has stirred something deep in the heart of the empire. The old guard is not willing to let go so easily."
Lin Yuer's heart races. "Are you telling me that my own father—"
"He didn't betray you, Your Majesty. He did what he thought was best for the empire. But you are the future now. You must decide whether to continue down this path, knowing that some will resist, or to compromise."
Lin Yuer's hands ball into fists. "Compromise? And give up everything I've worked for?"
Master Zheng's eyes are somber. "Sometimes, Your Majesty, it's not about what you are willing to give up. It's about what you are willing to protect."
The words hang in the air, heavy with meaning. Lin Yuer knows the time for hesitation is over. The storm is coming, and it will not be kind. But she will stand firm, no matter the cost.
