Avery froze.
Her breath caught in her throat, her mind short-circuiting as Cain's lips pressed against hers. Firm, demanding, possessive. It wasn't a question. It wasn't hesitant. It was raw, desperate. It was different than anything Avery had ever felt.
For a moment—just a moment—she forgot everything. The betrayal. The pain. The way he had hurt her over and over again. Because right now, with his warmth searing into her, his hands gripping her waist as if she was the only thing grounding him, she felt… wanted. Like she was something more. Like she mattered.

Avery's eyes widened, and she shoved at his chest. Hard.
