Chapter 119 - Xu Que raised a big uproar in Shangjing

At that moment, an ominous storm began to sweep across all of Shangjing.

Within just half an hour, everyone associated with the Chen family's Imperial Hunters Company received an inquiry call. Satellite imagery revealed a layout of the dimensional rift areas in the northeast, meticulously controlled by the Imperial Hunters Company. When the upper echelons in Shangjing saw that the situation was indeed as dire as reported, they began to panic—they had received considerable benefits from the Chen family.

"What should we do? If this blows up, there may be no way to account for it," one elderly figure muttered, clearly uneasy.

"Suppress this news, and summon Xu Que. At worst, we'll return some resources to appease him," replied another elder in traditional dress, none other than Chen Yunxiang, former patriarch of the Chen family.

"But we are businessmen; how do we explain this to the military and political sides?" questioned a gray-haired elder.

"Silence it, then eliminate Xu Que. That will be our answer," Chen Yunxiang said, calmly sipping his tea. The others in the room were silent, sharing the sentiment but unsure if everyone involved would agree to such drastic measures.

Noticing the silence, Chen Yunxiang continued, "Relay to Old Ye that we'll handle the matter. But before that, I don't want any missteps from the Chen family. Don't blame me if I have to get unpleasant."

The elders stiffened at Chen Yunxiang's words. They knew well the deep ties between the Chen family in Z-Country and the Chesfield family of Y-Country, a powerful alliance that included numerous top-ranked cultivators—an alliance not to be underestimated.

Meanwhile, at the Shangjing Military District Command Center, Sima Jing listened to the report from the Magic City, a frown clouding his face. Though he commanded the military authority in Shangjing, he was reluctant to act on his own. Furthermore, the recent call from the Ye family was clear: he was to refrain from intervening and instead focus on reorganizing the northeastern forces. Sima Jing understood the implications and glanced at Xu Que's file, then promptly exited the room.

As the hour neared its end, Xu Que prepared to move, intending to clear out some of the surrounding minor nuisances. His phone rang just then.

"The Imperial Hunters Company has agreed to relinquish control over the A- and B-class rifts, but they're refusing to release the C-class and below," Old Ye's voice was grave.

"So, they wouldn't compromise?" Xu Que asked with a faint, mocking smile.

"There are still talks to be had; this involves the interests of several influential families in Shangjing," Old Ye responded.

Ignoring Old Ye's attempts to explain, Xu Que inquired bluntly, "Old Ye, does our original agreement still hold?"

"I understand your feelings, but you're taking a dangerous course, acting alone like this. My elder brother called me just now; they want you to stand down," Old Ye said, his tone pleading.

Xu Que's voice grew cold. "I came to you in good faith, and this is how you repay me? Have you forgotten those fallen soldiers? Do you recall what was outlined in our contract?"

Old Ye fell silent, recalling Xu Que's initial negotiations, his provision of resources, and the sacrifices made. He was well aware of the excessive demands of those in Shangjing, who not only discarded Xu Que once his purpose was served but covertly undermined his company as well.

"From this day forward, I, Xu Que, am no longer a citizen of Z-Country. Once matters are settled, I will leave for another land," Xu Que declared, ending the call and fixing his gaze upon the distant snipers.

As he moved to take action, his phone rang once more. Seeing an unknown number, he frowned. Another attempt to dissuade him, perhaps?

A sharp, irritated voice burst through the line. "Are you Xu Que? This is Director Sun from Shangjing's Security Bureau. I'm ordering you to return to the Magic City immediately and stop causing disturbances in Shangjing—this is beyond your reach."

Xu Que's smile was ice-cold, devoid of any warmth.

"Xu Que, I know you're an orphan, but think of Shen Mengchu—what will she do if you cause such trouble? And her father, a major general in the Magic City Military District—do you really want to jeopardize that relationship?"

Director Sun's thinly veiled threats fell on deaf ears. Xu Que hung up and dialed Shen Mengchu's number instead.

Before he could even speak, Shen Mengchu's steady voice came through. "Do what you must. Whatever you decide, I'm with you."

"Thank you," he replied softly.

"Oh, my father wants a word," Shen Mengchu added.

Xu Que said nothing as Shen Tianhe took over the line.

"Xu, I don't know what Old Ye told you, but I hope you don't disappoint me. Also, know that the Chen family is connected to the Chesfield family. Even with evidence, handing it to Shangjing would be futile. So I hope you'll take care of matters cleanly. Do you understand?"

Xu Que paused, taken aback by Shen Tianhe's lack of reproach, his words rather an encouragement to follow through.

"Uncle Shen, I planned to leave Z-Country after this, but now… it seems I may not need to," Xu Que murmured.

"Z-Country is your homeland. A new era requires new thoughts. Frankly, I've grown weary of the decay in our system. Go forth; if anything arises, the Magic City Military District stands with you," Shen Tianhe replied firmly.

"Thank you, Uncle Shen," Xu Que said gratefully.

No sooner had he ended the call than three messages arrived on his phone. The first was from Ye Zhentian, a simple but resounding line: "Enough talk—do what needs doing!"

The second, from Chen Tianfang, offered Xu Que a 10% share of resources and an invitation to join him at Imperial Hunters in hopes of forming an alliance.

The third, predictably, was another from Director Sun.

Setting down his phone, Xu Que raised his eyes once more to the snipers stationed around him.

A single shot shattered the silence.

Feeling the approaching bullet, Xu Que moved ever so slightly, letting it graze his clothing.

The snipers froze, shocked. There had been no order to fire—who had acted prematurely?

Ignoring the bewildered snipers, Xu Que, seeing that the Chen family had made their intentions clear, walked unflinchingly toward the Chen estate, bullets cascading off him like rain. Stunned, the snipers quickly relayed what they had witnessed.

Upon hearing that Xu Que seemed impervious to gunfire, Chen Tianhao knew this test had already failed.

"Prepare yourselves," Chen Tianhao instructed coldly. "Let's show our would-be conqueror what true power is."

As Xu Que advanced down Liutiao Road, his figure materializing, countless police vehicles sped to the scene.

Seeing their arrival, Xu Que pulled out his phone once more…

"Xu Que, what's going on? I told you to leave Shangjing! Do you want to drag the Shen family into this mess?" Director Sun's voice demanded.

Before Sun could continue, Xu Que was standing before him, gripping his collar tightly.

"Without the Shen family, all of you would already be dead!" Xu Que growled. "Do you know who you're defending? Do you think you're upholding justice, order?"

"No! All you guard is your status, your interests!" he spat. "Since I emerged from the rift, it was the Shen family's protection that has shielded this country. Without Shen Mengchu's call, you would've been torn apart by alien beasts long ago."

His words cut deep, exposing the complacency and decay within Shangjing's leadership—a truth that had indeed already come to pass.

It was Shen Mengchu's call that had spared these parasites. It was Shen Tianhe's influence that had led Xu Que to a new resolve.
