Chapter 23 - Sacrifice and hope. Advance to Level B

**Command Center of the Battle for the Magic City**

Shen Tianhe and the others anxiously watched the data before them. Though they were all skilled in combat, they could still grasp the meaning behind the red and blue lines displayed on the screen.

"What do you think?" asked the elderly military officer with graying hair, who sat in the highest position.

"Ye Lao, this matter, we must provide some explanation," Shen Tianhe replied.

"Explain what? No one has entered that area. We don't even know if they're alive or dead," Elder Peng said, his voice tinged with anger.

"Calm down. At your age, you shouldn't let your blood pressure rise. If something were to happen to you, the people below might think we're bullying you," Elder Zhao reassured Elder Peng before continuing, "The issue now is that the dimensional rift has disappeared. Although we know it will reopen, we cannot predict when that will happen."

Seeing that the others were still worried about Zhao Xian and the others, Shen Tianhe decided to change the subject. "According to the data here, each time these alien creatures devour a human, they grow stronger. The experimental reports from the special training camp are clearer on this. However, their research on bloodlines and physical enhancement still requires us to bring back more of these alien creatures' bodies."

At this, the others nodded in agreement. They had discussed this in a previous meeting, but they hadn't expected it to be confirmed so soon.

"As for the bloodline injections from the special training camp, we'll keep that confidential for now. If it truly solves the issue without leaving any long-term consequences for humanity, we can introduce it more broadly later," Elder Ye said.

"According to the information received from the United States, they have already sent people into the dimensional rift, but the results have been less than satisfactory," Elder Zhao reported while holding a document.

"Do we have any related data?" Elder Ye inquired.

"Not yet, but every time they send someone in, the dimensional rift closes. Similarly, the reopening time is now unpredictable," Elder Zhao responded.

"Are they just using people as cannon fodder?" Elder Peng exclaimed in shock.

Elder Zhao said nothing, merely nodding. He knew that the actions of the United States were foolish, but since it was their internal matter, Z country had no right to intervene. The other nations could only watch helplessly.

"Keep tracking the data from the car sales center. If there's any anomaly, inform us immediately," Elder Ye instructed Elder Zhao.

"Understood," Elder Zhao said. "Rest assured, I believe in those kids."

Elder Ye nodded without comment. While he was curious about the situation, he was unwilling to risk human lives for the sake of speculation.

Just then, a red light flashed on the battle command center's console.

"What's going on?" Elder Ye rose and looked outside.

"Report! The dimensional rift in the harbor area is fluctuating, and a large number of alien creatures are pouring out," a data officer quickly reported.

"Notify the air force base to be on standby..."

Before Elder Ye could finish his sentence, another data officer rushed in, holding a report.

"Report! We've detected a large number of flying alien creatures emerging from the dimensional rift in the harbor area."

The room fell into stunned silence. None of them had expected there would be bird-like alien creatures in the dimensional rift!

"Notify the early warning combat units. Have them bring anti-aircraft guns; not a single flying alien creature must be allowed to escape!" Elder Ye ordered.

"Yes!"

Meanwhile, in the harbor area.

Since the dimensional rift began fluctuating, gunfire had never stopped. However, the real problem was that these alien creatures were incredibly difficult to kill.

Compared to regular firearms, they could only pick off those alien creatures that were already near death, while heavy artillery could only injure them at best.

As a team of soldiers quickly approached the first firing point, countless strange birds flew out of the dimensional rift. They were pitch-black, with long, sharp beaks, and their bodies were as large as millstones.

"Watch out!" a soldier shouted as he raised his gun and fired rapidly.

But no matter how many bullets were fired, none of them could pierce the strange birds' wings.

As the birds dived, three soldiers cried out in pain.

"Boom!" Several grenades exploded simultaneously.

Looking at the strange birds, the soldiers saw that, aside from losing a few feathers, they seemed to be completely unharmed.

"Retreat!" The lead captain immediately ordered.

They clearly couldn't handle these strange birds, and their priority was to preserve their combat strength.

As more and more strange birds appeared, chaos erupted on the front lines. Even the drones that had been conducting reconnaissance were destroyed by the swarming creatures.

Just then, the sound of sonic booms filled the air as three fighter jets arrived over the battlefield.

Several missiles were launched, but the next moment, massive explosions did not occur on the ground. Instead, the missiles exploded midair like fireworks!

The young commander stood in shock. Before he could make sense of the situation, he saw the strange birds surging towards the sky, heading straight for the fighter jets.

"Damn it!" the young commander cursed under his breath, grabbing his radio and shouting, "This is Tiger Camp Command. All fighter jets, return immediately!"

Just after giving the order, the sound of explosions in the sky made his scalp tingle.

At that moment, two fighter jets rapidly climbed, but countless black birds followed them, swarming behind their wings.

"White Kite, White Kite, this is Eagle Falcon. I'll buy you some time! You need to change direction and retreat immediately!"

"Eagle Falcon, don't do anything reckless!" came the reply.

"We don't have time! Remember to avenge us!"

With that, the radio transmission was cut off. One of the fighter jets veered off course, rocketing toward the tail of the other jet.

"You monsters, die!" the pilot yelled as he pressed the fire buttons.

Three missiles shot out, striking the swarming birds. The air was filled with the sound of explosions.

No one knew the true identities of these heroes. Their names would only be inscribed on cold stone monuments.

The crackling sound of static filled the young commander's ears. Tears fell from his numb face.

"This is Tiger Control. Please respond. This is the early warning air defense command, do you copy?"

The young commander gritted his teeth, holding back tears as he picked up the radio: "This is Tiger Control, requesting air defense support!"

"Received. Please stay 200 meters away from the dimensional rift."

With the radio silence, over a thousand anti-aircraft cannons fired from the southern harbor area!

The barrage of fire was like tongues of flame, bringing down countless strange birds, though many still remained.

Meanwhile, in the battle command center, the elderly officers began discussing whether to deploy high-explosive missiles, as the survival of humanity was at stake.

Before they could reach a conclusion, a new set of data from various countries arrived on the conference table.

The elderly officers were stunned into silence upon reading the data.

"It seems our only option now is to use firepower coverage," Elder Zhao said, tossing aside the report.

"What about the special training camp? Can we send them into the fight?" Elder Peng asked urgently.

"With the current alien creatures, our prepared combat force is still insufficient," Shen Tianhe shook his head.

"Ten of our soldiers against one alien, is that still impossible?" Elder Peng pressed.

"Against dogs, yes. But in the harbor area, we're dealing with bears and scorpions, and now these strange birds. Do you want to send them to their deaths?" Shen Tianhe retorted.

"Enough, both of you, quiet down. Notify the front lines to buy us one more day. One day from now, regardless of the outcome, the warriors we've trained must head to the harbor area!" Elder Ye stood and commanded.

**In the Dimensional Space**, Xu Que slowly opened his eyes. At this moment, he had activated twelve stars.

He was finally about to step into B-rank!

Xu Que felt an intense excitement surge within him. Grabbing the nearby *Greedy Crystal*, he absorbed all its spiritual energy.

"Empty!" A thunderous sound reverberated around him.

Layers of sonic waves, like ocean tides, surged toward the surrounding walls.

His eyes, once faintly twinkling with starlight, now gleamed like a galaxy of stars.

A soft, silver starlight shimmered around him like ripples in water. This was the sign of his imminent ascension to B-rank!
