Vera's background is not as tragic as it was portrayed by most of her group. When she was young she had grown up in an orphanage.

The orphanage, with its rotting walls and sunken ceilings, was a place where childhood innocence went to die. Vera had spent her earliest years in its suffocating confines, where survival meant taking more than you gave and trusting no one. At nine, Vera learned the most valuable lesson of all: violence was the only language people understood.

It was late one evening, the dim light of the moon barely penetrating the broken windows of the orphanage, when Vera snapped. The caretaker, a greedy man with a penchant for cruelty, had struck one of the younger children for stealing food. Vera, too hungry and too furious to care anymore, took up a fire poker and swung. Once, twice, and then thrice, until his screams ceased, replaced by the sickening squelch of metal against flesh.
