Chapter 7 - The Beast of Ashgrove

The night was thick with mist as Selene and the wolf ventured deeper into the dense forest, the ancient trees whispering secrets of ages long past. The air was heavy with the scent of damp earth and the sound of distant creatures stirring in the underbrush. But there was something different tonight—something in the air, a sense of anticipation that Selene couldn't shake.

She had left Aveline behind, her mind focused on what lay ahead: the relics and knowledge she would need to unlock the true power of the Eclipse Talisman. She had felt the Queen's pull, guiding her steps toward the hidden places of the world, those ancient ruins where forgotten secrets slumbered, waiting to be unearthed.

But she wasn't alone in this pursuit. As she moved through the shadows, she felt the unmistakable presence of someone—or something—trailing her. Her instincts screamed a warning, but her curiosity overpowered it. Who would follow her into the woods, so deep into the heart of darkness?

Her gaze flicked to the wolf, whose amber eyes glimmered in the low light. It growled softly, its fur bristling. Selene paused, scanning the trees around them. Something moved in the shadows—too fast for her to see clearly, but she felt its presence like a weight in the air.

Suddenly, a soft, almost melodic voice pierced the silence.

"You're not alone, are you, child of the shadows?"

Selene's heart skipped a beat, but she didn't flinch. She reached for the amulet around her neck, the familiar pulse of power reassuring her. "Who's there?" she demanded, her voice steady but laced with caution.

From the darkness, a figure stepped forward. It was a woman—tall and graceful, with dark hair that seemed to shift like liquid shadows. Her eyes were an unsettling shade of silver, glowing faintly in the dark, and her skin seemed to shimmer with a light of its own, as though she were part of the forest itself.

"Not what you were expecting, I imagine," the woman said, a wry smile curling on her lips. "But you're not the only one with a claim to the old power."

Selene's senses sharpened. "Who are you?"

The woman's smile faded, and she raised a hand, signaling for Selene to calm her nerves. "Forgive me. My name is Lirael. I'm a seeker, much like you. I've heard whispers of the Eclipse Talisman. But I'm not here to steal it." She glanced at the amulet around Selene's neck with a gaze both respectful and hungry. "I'm here to warn you."

Selene studied her warily, her grip on the amulet tightening. "Warn me?"

Lirael nodded, her silver eyes narrowing as she glanced toward the thick trees. "There's something worse than Lord Avedon hunting you, something much older, much more dangerous."

As if on cue, a low, guttural growl echoed through the trees, followed by the sound of something large moving through the underbrush. The wolf stiffened beside Selene, its hackles raised, but it didn't make a move.

"What was that?" Selene asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Lirael's expression darkened. "The Ashgrove Beast. A creature of legend, cursed by the first rulers of this land. It's a guardian—one that hunts down anyone who dares disturb the ancient sites of power. And now, it's hunting you."

Before Selene could react, a massive shadow lunged from the trees, too fast for the eye to follow. A creature the size of a bear, with glowing eyes and fur black as midnight, its form shifting and writhing as though it were not entirely solid. Its jaws were filled with jagged teeth, and its claws gleamed like obsidian, ready to tear through flesh and bone.

The wolf barked fiercely, leaping to intercept, but the creature swiped a massive paw, knocking it back with an ear-splitting growl.

Selene's heart raced. The creature's presence was suffocating, its dark aura pressing in on her from all sides. She could feel the shadows around her stirring, but this beast was unlike anything she had faced before. It was not just an animal—it was a force, a manifestation of the very darkness she had learned to control.

Lirael raised her hand, and the air around them shimmered. A barrier of pale blue light formed between them and the beast, but it was already cracking under the force of the creature's weight.

"You'll have to do better than that, Lirael," the creature growled in a voice that seemed to come from the earth itself, its words heavy with ancient malice. "This forest is mine to guard. And none shall pass."

"Then you will fall," Lirael replied, her voice cold, her eyes glowing with power. "I will not let you stop her."

The creature snarled, but before it could strike again, Selene felt the shadows stir within her—stronger, more alive than ever before. The Queen's voice resonated in her mind, urging her to act.

"Unleash your power, child. You are the heir of shadows. Let them bend to your will."

With a snap of her fingers, Selene summoned the darkness. The shadows obeyed, rushing forward like a tidal wave, swirling around her and coiling toward the beast. The creature howled, a sound that pierced the night, as the shadows clung to it, wrapping around its limbs, its body, pulling it down.

The Ashgrove Beast fought with all its might, but the shadows held firm, tightening around its throat and limbs like chains. Selene's heart pounded as she focused all her energy on keeping it subdued.

Lirael's voice cut through the chaos. "You must bind it, not destroy it! The Beast is not an enemy to kill, but one to tame."

"What?" Selene shouted, but her words were lost in the sound of the beast's struggle. "I can't—"

"Focus!" Lirael commanded. "Control the shadows! Let them bind its will, not its body."

Selene clenched her jaw, pushing past her fear. She reached into the shadows, feeling the swirling power beneath her fingertips, urging it to calm, to still. Slowly, painfully, she twisted the darkness into a cage around the creature's heart, forcing its power to bend to her will.

The beast roared one final time, then slumped to the ground, its glowing eyes dimming. It was still, unmoving.

Selene's chest heaved with exertion, the shadows around her flickering, unstable. But she held her ground, refusing to let go.

Lirael stepped forward, her expression one of respect. "Well done. You have the power, but you still need control."

Selene nodded, her mind whirling. "What was that thing? And why is it after me?"

Lirael glanced at the now-immobile creature. "The Ashgrove Beast is a guardian of the old world. It was bound to protect the ancient places of power, the sites where the first rulers of this land made their pacts with the forces of darkness. It has been disturbed, awakened, and now it hunts anyone who dares to trespass."

"So it was never really after me?" Selene asked, her voice thick with disbelief.

"Not exactly," Lirael said with a rueful smile. "It's not the amulet it's after, or even you, child. It's the force within you—the power of the Phantom Queen's bloodline that stirs the old magic."

Selene's eyes widened. "So, I'm the one disturbing the balance?"

Lirael nodded. "Yes. And you'll need to learn how to control it, or you'll face more creatures like this, more dangers that will come for your blood. The Beast was a warning. It's not the only one."

Selene looked down at the creature. "What should we do with it?"

Lirael's eyes gleamed with a strange light. "We'll leave it where it lies—for now. But this is only the beginning. There are others who will seek to claim the power of the Eclipse Talisman, and some of them are not so easily tamed."

As they turned to leave, the shadows around them seemed to shift, as though they too were alive, watching, waiting. The forest whispered its ancient secrets, and Selene felt the weight of her destiny pressing down upon her.

The journey ahead was more perilous than she had imagined, but one thing was clear: she was not just a girl with a talisman. She was the heir to something much darker, much more powerful. And the world would soon learn that the Phantom Queen's legacy was not so easily erased.
