Chapter 12 - Shadows and secrets

Kal soared through the dense foliage, his boosters igniting in a bright flash. His quick escape was cut short when a thick tree branch smacked him mid-flight, throwing him off balance. Kal tumbled through the air and crashed to the forest floor, groaning as he landed amidst a layer of leaves and dirt. Dazed, he slowly sat up, brushing dirt off his jacket, trying to regain his bearings.

On the other side of the woods, Kade stood face-to-face with the mysterious man who had emerged from the capsule-a hulking figure with a cold, emotionless gaze. Kade, ever defiant, clenched his fists, sizing up the man. "You wanna go?" he taunted, hoping to shake the man's resolve. But the man didn't flinch; instead, he took a slow, deliberate step toward Kade, his silence exuding a lethal confidence.

Without hesitation, Kade lunged forward, throwing punch after punch, each one more forceful than the last. Yet, his blows barely seemed to make an impact, glancing off the man's body as if he were striking steel. Frustration built up inside Kade until he finally landed a solid hit on the man's face. The blow barely fazed him; instead, it only seemed to enrage him. In an instant, the man wrapped his massive hands around Kade and lifted him off the ground effortlessly, his grip tightening like a vice as he prepared to deliver a punishing strike.

Just then, laughter echoed through the clearing as the clown brothers made their grand entrance. Their ship had landed nearby, and they strutted forward, mocking the fight with exaggerated yawns and dramatic sighs. "This is pathetic!" one of them chortled, adjusting the skull-painted mask that covered his face. "All that hype, and this is all they got?" The other laughed, slapping his brother on the back. These two thrived in chaos and took every opportunity to turn violence into a twisted form of entertainment.

The man released his grip on Kade and turned his attention to the clown brothers, his dark eyes narrowing in annoyance. He had been dispatched with a specific mission: to eliminate the family of three, who were now on the Federation's high-priority bounty list. Though he had taken care of the parents, their daughter had eluded him, slipping through his fingers and complicating his task. And now, more "flies," as he considered them, were buzzing around his objective, interfering with his plans.

Meanwhile, back in the forest, Kal staggered to his feet, shaking off the effects of his fall. His vision cleared, and he noticed a set of small footprints trailing through the underbrush, diverging from the larger, more chaotic tracks. As he followed them, he eventually spotted a young girl crouched beneath a towering tree, her face streaked with tears and her small form trembling with fear.

He approached her carefully, crouching down to her level. "Hey there," he said softly, trying not to startle her. "Are you okay?"

The girl looked up at him with wide, terrified eyes, but didn't respond. She simply stared, her cheeks wet with fresh tears. Sensing her fear, Kal extended a hand. "It's alright," he said, his voice calm and reassuring. "You're safe now. Come with me, and I'll keep you safe."

The girl hesitated, glancing at his outstretched hand before finally nodding. She rose from her spot under the tree, her tiny hand slipping into his, and together, they walked back through the dense woods toward Kal's ship.

As they approached the landing site, Kal's heart raced with urgency. He knew that the ruthless man who was hunting her would stop at nothing to finish his mission. They had to leave this planet, and fast. The girl climbed aboard his ship, and Kal wasted no time getting the engines ready. The ship roared to life, and with a final glance at the world below, he piloted them off the surface, escaping into the stars.

Back on the ground, the man watched Kal's ship disappear into the sky. His jaw tightened in silent fury, and he turned his gaze toward the clown brothers, who had their arms crossed and were grinning at him like this was all just another game. He felt a deep, seething anger-an unshakable urge to eliminate every obstacle in his path. He began advancing on the clowns, who immediately straightened, realizing that this "game" was about to become very real.

As the ship sped through space, Kal could feel the tension in the cabin. He glanced at the girl, who sat quietly in the co-pilot's seat, staring at the stars with a blank expression. She didn't say much, but her presence stirred something within him-a protective instinct he hadn't felt in years.

They arrived home, and as Kal powered down the ship, Sara appeared at the landing bay, her brow furrowed in confusion. As she walked over, her eyes fell on the small figure standing beside Kal. "Who... is this?" she asked, her voice a mixture of surprise and curiosity.

Kal raised a hand to halt her questions. "I'll explain everything soon, Sara," he said, his tone uncharacteristically solemn. "But for now, we're in trouble, and we need to prepare."

Once inside, Kal dug into his bag, pulling out a small orb-the device the doctor had given him. He hadn't had a chance to inspect it until now, but his gut told him this was important. Holding his breath, he activated the orb, and a holographic projection sprang to life. It was a video message from the doctor himself.

The doctor appeared, looking weary but determined. He began to explain the artifact he had developed-a device with the potential to revolutionize or destroy civilization, depending on whose hands it fell into. He warned of the danger it posed and the dark forces within the Federation that would stop at nothing to claim it. He concluded by imploring Kal to protect the device and to trust no one, for the entire galaxy was at stake.

The message ended, and Kal felt a chill run down his spine. The girl tugged on his sleeve, snapping him back to the present. He looked down at her and realized she was as much a part of this puzzle as the artifact itself. Sara, too, stood by, her eyes wide as she processed what they had just seen.

Kal knew he needed answers, and there was only one place in the galaxy where he might find them-Earth. It was a place shrouded in history and mystery, having narrowly escaped destruction nearly six centuries ago in the year 2267. While most of the planet had been abandoned, one continent had survived and thrived: Africa. Now united under a single powerful nation, it had become a bastion of knowledge and technology. Ruled by a wise and enigmatic king, it held secrets that could potentially unlock the mystery behind the artifact.

Looking at Sara and the girl, Kal steeled himself. The path ahead was fraught with danger, but he was determined to see it through, no matter the cost.
