The humming grew more louder as Jax and Zara's teams pressed deeper into the chamber where Dr. Elwes stood, his figure illuminated by the brilliant, pulsing core of Eternity. The device was unlike anything they'd ever seen—a swirling vortex of energy suspended in a massive containment field, pulsing with a rhythm that felt almost alive. It was as if the very fabric of space-time was contained within the machine, rippling and shifting as Eternity resonated.
"Take one step closer, and I'll activate the containment protocol," Elwes sneered, raising a remote device in his hand. "Eternity's core will surely be untouchable."
Jax aimed his blaster at Elwes, his gaze unwavering. "You think just a gadget's going to stop us? We didn't come all this way to watch you play god."
But Elwes merely smiled. "I expected more from you, Captain," he taunted, his fingers hovering over the device. "You're not here to stop me. You're here to witness the birth of a new galaxy—a galaxy without suffering, without conflict, where all beings serve a higher purpose."
"Your purpose," Zara interrupted, her voice thick with disdain. "You mean a galaxy where The Architects rule all living soul."
Elwes shrugged. "Someone must decide. And who better than those of us who understand Eternity's potential?"
Behind him, Arin frantically tapped into his own device, feeding data to the team as he hacked into Eternity's core systems. "Captain," he whispered over the comm, "the containment field is protected by layers of encrypted codes, but if I can get through, I might be able to disrupt it. The problem is, I'll need at least ten minutes."
"We'll buy you the time," Jax replied, his voice a calm mask over his mounting desperation. "Grim, Zara—hold position here and keep Elwes occupied. Don't let him near the controls."
A fierce battle erupted in the chamber, the confined space crackling with energy and the sound of blaster fire. Elwes barked orders to his elite guards, who swarmed in with deadly precision, forcing Jax's team to fight with every ounce of skill and strength they had. Zara moved like a whirlwind, her blaster and blade moving in a deadly tandem as she kept Elwes at bay. Grimjack shielded Arin, his powerful frame absorbing the blows and returning fire with ruthless efficiency.
"Come on, Arin," Jax muttered under his breath as he fired at an advancing guard. "Hurry."
As Arin's fingers danced over his console, breaking through layer after layer of encryption, he glimpsed Eternity's true purpose. His eyes widened as he saw data that suggested the device was designed to not just manipulate, but rewrite the past, present, and future of entire star systems. Elwes hadn't been exaggerating; this device could undo reality as they knew it.
Finally, Arin's screen flashed green. "Captain! I've got it! Disabling the containment field… now!"
With a triumphant shout, the containment field flickered, and a crackling energy surged as the core destabilized. The vortex within Eternity began to shift erratically, emitting a deep, ominous hum.
Dr. Elwes' face twisted in rage as he lunged toward the control panel. "You fools! You don't know what you're doing! If the core destabilizes completely, it will tear a rift through space-time itself!"
"Then you shouldn't have created it," Jax growled, grappling with Elwes as the chamber shook violently. Sparks flew from the machinery around them, and alarms blared as Eternity's core began to overload.
"Captain, we have to get out of here!" Zara yelled, grabbing Jax's arm.
But Elwes struggled against them, desperately reaching for the control panel. "No! Eternity is mine! You can't—"
A blast of energy erupted from the core, knocking Elwes back with brutal force. Jax caught a glimpse of terror in the scientist's eyes as he realized his creation was spiraling out of control. The crew scrambled for the exit, pulling each other through the chaos as the chamber began to collapse around them.
As they made it into the corridor, Jax looked back one last time, seeing Elwes disappear in the blinding light of Eternity's implosion.
They barely made it to the Marauder's Revenge before the entire facility erupted in a violent explosion, sending shockwaves that rippled across the desolate planet.
Inside the ship, Zara slumped against the wall, catching her breath. "Is it over?"
Jax nodded grimly, though he couldn't shake the feeling that Eternity's power had left a mark on them all. "For now. But something tells me we haven't seen the last of The Architects....."
