I stared at the heaps of files and my eyes suddenly got teary. I wasn't that kind of a lady that would get teary over little things but anytime I did, just know that I was seriously pained.
My hands caressed the files horizontally and I started sorting them out one after the other. They were smelling of materials that has been quenched with dust. Well, they were. I couldn't even place a reasonable count on how many times I had sneezed.
Hastily but diligently, I went through the files and made my reports about them but it seemed like they were becoming more many.
"Boss said I give you this" the lady that was here earlier dropped another heap of files on my table. I was still in my misery when I noticed a figure was still standing.
"What? You can go." I told her but she still stood still.
"Fine, say your mind" I encouraged her in a calm sarcastic voice.
"Stephen is mine and mine alone. Stay away from him" we both chorused and she looked at me like I have gone nuts.
"Bitch, that line is too old to be used by someone as wretched as you are" I finally spared her a long glance.
"I wouldn't say anything more than that" we chorused again making her fume in anger.
"The door awaits you" I stood up to open the door wide motioning her to leave. After staring at me like she could stab me with her eyes, she left not before stomping her foot on the ground.
I went back to my misery and started going through the files. The tears that I was holding suddenly dropped on the files making droplets on the papers.
This was inhumane. I kept on expecting Stephen's presence but I did not see him. It was lunch time and I abandoned the files and quickly grabbed something to eat.
I went to the canteen and ordered my meal. I quickly finished my meal so I would resume back to the files and leave the office on time.
Sluggishly, I resumed back to the files using every opportunity to hiss, grunt and grumble. It was so easy cursing Stephen in his absence.
"Screw you Stephen" I said for the umpteenth time.
"Phew!" I heaved in relief as I completed the last file. I took out my phone from my bad and I screamed.
"8:30 pm?!" I screamed in disbelief. The office was looking so bright that one would not even know that time has been far spent. Well, one doesn't know how far time has been spent when you're occupied or with your loved ones. That reminds me to phone Sophie, my best friend, to gist her about everything that has happened so far. She was the best gift high school gave me and I've always promised myself to hold onto her like my life depended on her because it truly did.
Having arranged my bag, I made to leave the office when I remembered that I hadn't work on the investor's reports.
"Arrrghhhhhh" I screamed throwing away my heels from my legs. I went back to my seat and started working on that. Fortunately, it wasn't too voluminous.
A knock interrupted me from my sleep.
"Good evening ma'am" the securing man I guess greeted me. I didn't even realize I had slept off. I was so exhausted.
"I noticed the lights in the boss's office wasn't switched off and I was curious to know who was there since I saw the boss leave" he explained and I just nodded, too weak to even speak. As I walked, i placed a call through by best friend before I lose my sanity.
"Hi bestieee" she picked at the second ring sounding so enthusiastic.
"Hi" I replied dryly.
"Hey, what's with that tone?" I could tell she was smiling.
"Nothing" I responded.
"Tell me who made your day hard. Wait. You started your job today" she spoke slowly picking the pieces herself.
"You did not get the job?" She asked worriedly.
"I did"
"So what's wrong? The jerk overworked you?" When I did not respond, she took that as an affirmative response.
"Oh, dear. My poor baby girl. You know what? Wait for mama. Amma break his neck and give it to him in his hands. I would then dismember his organ from his balls and attach it to his anus" she said with all seriousness.
By now, I was laughing heartily that I soon forgot everything that asshole made me go through today.
"You'd be fine my love. It's just for a little while…."
"And all this things would have passed" we chorused over the phone.
"Exactly so, Elena. What's the name of your company?" She asked.
"Not until you tell me the name of your prince charming" I was suddenly sounding vibrant but my face was the direct opposite.
"He's even the one calling" she squeaked excitedly.
"Go girl. I'd be fine" I told her.
"Bye" she hung up before I could even reply. I wished we talked a little longer but I'm still grateful to her for making me smile. I hailed a cab home and crashed immediately in bed not even paying attention to the noises my stomach was making.
The next day came without delay. I did my morning routine very quickly and headed to the office.
"What an angel"
"See those legs"
"Gosh her hair"
"Damn those hips"
"Her complexion is definitely out of this world"
I kept on hearing compliments as I made my way to my office. I wasn't uncommon to that. In fact, it was part of my daily routine to hear people compliment me.
"Miss Elena" someone called my name as I made for the stairs. It was Stephen.
"Take the elevator with me" he said very loud for me to hear him despite our distance. I ignored him.
"It's an order" I stomped my foot on the ground and took the elevator with him.
"You really enjoy it when people compliment you?" He asked when we were in the elevator. Just then, the elevator opened as I saw that as a perfect coincidence to avoid such question.
I walked fast and he maintained the same pace as me. We entered into the office and the first thing he did was go through the files.
"Wow…you're so hardworking. I never knew….."
His ringtone interrupted him.
"My father is dead?" His eyes were wide opened.
