Chapter 63 - Adventures of Aoi and Akemi

The park near Aoi's house was bustling with life. Children played on swings, families picnicked under the shade of large trees, and a group of seniors practiced tai chi in a quiet corner. Amidst this lively scene, Aoi and her best friend Akemi were a whirlwind of chaos.

Akemi, with her signature pigtails and mischievous grin, nudged Aoi as they stood in front of the ice cream truck. "You're treating today, right, Aoi-chan? After all, you lost the last bet!"

Aoi groaned, digging into her pocket for coins. "I still think you cheated during that game!"

Akemi feigned innocence, placing a hand dramatically on her chest. "Me? Cheat? How dare you accuse your beloved friend of such a heinous crime?"

"Yeah, yeah, beloved until it's time to pay," Aoi muttered, handing the vendor money and grabbing two cones.

They walked to a nearby bench, enjoying their treats. Akemi took a giant bite of her ice cream, only to wince and clutch her head. "Ahhh! Brain freeze!"

Aoi snickered. "That's what you get for being so greedy."

Recovering, Akemi narrowed her eyes. "Oh, you think you're so funny, huh? Let's see how you like this!" Without warning, she smeared some of her ice cream onto Aoi's nose.

"Akemi!" Aoi yelped, jumping back. "You're so dead!"

What ensued was a chaotic chase around the park. Akemi dashed through the playground, dodging kids and sliding down the slide to escape Aoi's wrath. Aoi, determined, climbed up the jungle gym and tried to cut her off.

"Catch me if you can!" Akemi taunted, sticking out her tongue.

"I'll catch you, and when I do, you're going to regret it!" Aoi yelled back, her face red more from laughter than anger.

Their antics soon attracted the attention of other kids, who began cheering for Aoi to catch Akemi. Some even joined in, turning it into an impromptu game of tag.

Eventually, both girls collapsed on the grass, panting and laughing. Aoi wiped her brow. "You're insane, you know that?"

Akemi grinned. "And you love me for it."

Before Aoi could retort, Akemi sat up suddenly. "Hey, let's check out the pond! I heard there are ducks there."

"Ducks?" Aoi raised an eyebrow. "Since when are you interested in ducks?"

"Since now!" Akemi declared, pulling Aoi to her feet.

The two made their way to the pond, where a few ducks were lazily swimming. Akemi crouched down, staring at them intently. "Look at them, Aoi-chan. They're so cute and round!"

Aoi crossed her arms. "You're acting like you've never seen a duck before."

Ignoring her, Akemi picked up a piece of bread she'd stuffed in her pocket earlier and tossed it toward the ducks. They quacked loudly and paddled over, gobbling it up.

"See? They love me," Akemi said smugly.

One particularly bold duck waddled closer, eyeing the bread in her hand. Akemi crouched lower, holding out the piece. "Come on, little guy. Take it!"

As the duck moved closer, Aoi noticed something. "Uh, Akemi, I think it's looking at you, not the bread."

Before Akemi could react, the duck flapped its wings and lunged, snatching the bread from her hand and nipping her finger in the process.

"Ahhh! It bit me!" Akemi yelled, scrambling backward.

Aoi burst out laughing. "That's what you get for messing with nature!"

Akemi glared at her, holding up her finger. "It's not funny! What if I get duck rabies or something?"

"Duck rabies isn't even a thing," Aoi said between giggles.

"Still," Akemi muttered, looking warily at the ducks, who had now gathered in a small group, watching her. "I think they're planning something."

"Yeah, they're plotting their revenge for all the bread thieves out there," Aoi teased.

As the sun began to set, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, the two girls sat on a bench overlooking the pond. Despite the chaos, they both felt a sense of contentment.

"Today was fun," Aoi said, leaning back.

"Of course, it was. Any day with me is fun," Akemi replied with a grin.

Aoi rolled her eyes but couldn't help smiling. "You're so full of yourself."

"And you wouldn't have it any other way," Akemi shot back, sticking her tongue out.

As they made their way home, laughing and recounting the day's events, Aoi couldn't help but feel grateful for her crazy, wonderful friend.
