Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

Sara's pov: It was six in the morning when l woke up to pray as l was born into a Muslim family. I realised the room l was in was different, then l remembered l left my country originally where l was born a month ago. I remembered l had cried because l would be leaving everything behind to start a new life in a new country. Even though l left my country Nigeria a month ago, whenever l woke up l use to look at my surroundings because l felt a deep connection to my country. Afterall, l lived over 14 years of my life there. I missed everyone l knew over there and my home. I stood dazed reminiscing over my life in Nigeria when l heard my mum shouting my name to get ready for my new school. I was just starting school today in England the country l moved to. I was so anxious due to many reasons. Not because l'm black though but because of their accents. I had shyed away from talking to anyone because l had a Nigerian accents. I had been so worried but l had no choice l had to go to a school since l wanted to become a doctor in the future. I could have joined the school two days ago but l couldn't because my uniform hasn't been brought since we ordered it. It was funny to me since in Nigeria you can start school without buying your uniform first. And also you don't need an appointment to go to any school in my country but here you do need appointments. My two sisters had already started school two days ago. Actually, l have three sisters and no brothers which is quite sad. I use to get jealous whenever l see people with their brothers especially if it's their elder brother. So keep your brother away from me! I have one elder sister, Abir and two younger ones Iqra and Farah respectively making my dad the only man at home.

I was wearing my hijab when my mum called me to hurry up since we're getting late. We had to walk there since it wasn't very far and my parents had no car in this country yet. I ate a little of my breakfast because l was worried. My mum advised me to eat well since they wouldn't eat or bite me in the school. On our way there l was saying prayers for it to be a good school full with nice people.

I went to the school reception and l met my house leader which l already met a few days ago and the only face l know in the school. I met her the other day for my induction and l was showed around the school, a very big place compared to my previous school. I remembered l was asked by a girl probably in year eleven, asking which year I was and l was like saying yes because l couldn't hear her accents and she wouldn't hear mine either if l asked her to come again which could later cause confusion. Luckily the two girls that were showing me around were there to answer for me. If l say l wasn't embarrassed that was a lie but l acted like it was nothing. That was my first time in the school not my first day though because they were just showing me around. I was thinking about this when my house leader asked me to wait in the reception with my mum before taking me to my tutor groups. If my induction went like that how will my days in the school go. I was telling my worries to my mom and told me not to be worried. "Everything is gonna be fine." she said. Hopefully everything goes well. I tried to relax and not worry about unnecessary things. I saw my mum deep in thought. It was obvious she was thinking about something. Then l remembered what she could be thinking about but l wasn't so sure. My parents and my elder sister were here a year before me and my younger sisters. They wanted to settle here first and see how things goes. We were left with our uncle's wife who also has two children of her own. Our uncle comes home three to four days in a week because of his business. And his wife had to move into our house to take care of us. She took care us for over eight months which wasn't really easy. It wasn't easy for anyone because living without my parents wasn't easy but we survived through. My parents before we three got here lived in my cousin Ali's house and they paid rent monthly. But everything changed when me and my younger sisters got there. They asked us to leave the house and failure to move will not be a good thing. He wrote in the letter he would call the police and social workers if we failed to move. My parents were going to move before he sent the mail because we needed a bigger place since we joined them but they didn't expect him to send us out of the place since we haven't found another place yet. I guess my mum's mind must still be on that since she was heartbroken since she thought we're all family. But to them money comes first before family.

It was finally time for me to leave for my tutor group. My mum bade me goodbye and reassured me everything would be fine. "Are you happy to join the school."? Mrs Score, my house leader asked. I replied postively as she led me to my tutor group. She opened a room where there were students with a teacher in front of them. As l entered all eyes welcomed me and l began to feel nervous as all eyes were on me. ************* How will her day be in her new school? Do you think she will cope through?
