Chapter 16 - REUNION AND OLD FRIENDS

Claire adjusted the strap of her dress as she stood outside the brightly lit community hall. The faint hum of laughter and music spilled into the night air, mingling with her nerves. She took a deep breath, summoning the confidence she'd learned to carry in Hollywood.

When she stepped through the doors, the familiar scent of polished wood and vanilla candles greeted her. The hall was alive with chatter, bursts of laughter, and the occasional squeal of recognition. Claire hesitated for a moment, scanning the crowd, before a familiar voice called out.

"Claire Harper, is that really you?"

She turned and found herself face-to-face with Lily, the ever-energetic star athlete of their class. Lily's short hair framed her face, and her warm smile made Claire's nerves ease instantly.

"Lily!" Claire said, grinning as Lily rushed over to hug her.

"You look incredible," Lily said, pulling back to study her. "All these years and Hollywood hasn't changed you a bit."

Claire laughed. "You're one to talk. You're still as stunning as ever."

"Flattery will get you everywhere," Lily said with a wink. "Come on, everyone's dying to see you."

Claire let herself be pulled toward a group near the snack table, her heels clicking softly on the wooden floor. The first person she spotted was Mark, the quiet artist, who stood with a drink in hand and a knowing smile.

"Mark," Claire said warmly.

"Claire," he said, his voice calm but full of affection. "It's been a while."

Before Claire could respond, a familiar burst of energy joined the group. Sarah, the group's jokester, appeared with a glass of wine in one hand and her trademark mischievous grin.

"Claire Harper," Sarah said dramatically, bowing slightly. "The queen returns!"

"Sarah," Claire said, laughing. "Still as dramatic as ever."

"Always," Sarah said, straightening up. "How's the glamorous life treating you?"

"Exhausting, if I'm honest," Claire admitted. "But it's good to be back home."

"You couldn't have picked a better time," Lily said, nudging her. "We've been swapping old stories all night. Remember the science lab prank?"

Sarah raised her glass in triumph. "Ah, my legacy."

"And Mark fell for it," Lily added, laughing.

"I was twelve," Mark said, shaking his head. "And Sarah can be very convincing."

The group burst into laughter, the years falling away as they slipped back into their old dynamic.

As the evening wore on, Claire found herself surrounded by old friends. Hannah, the class scholar, now a researcher, shared stories about her travels. Jacob, the tech genius, spoke animatedly about his startup. Each conversation was a bridge to the past, filled with warmth and fondness.

Yet, even as she laughed and reminisced, Claire couldn't stop her thoughts from drifting. She glanced around the room, wondering if a certain someone arrived.
