Kain wiped the sweat dripping from his brow, with a white wet wrag hung limply around his shoulders. His chest heaved with each breath he took, as held a long heavy hammer in one hand.
"Is it done?" Marko the newcomer asked, as he looked towards Kain who was standing on top of planks that would hold the cement. Kain hammered the nails connecting the plank one more time before coming down through the ladder.
"Yeah don't worry, though you really need to learn how to overcome your height fears, I mean I will not always be there kiddo" Kain told Marko as he ruffled his blonde hair with his sweaty palm.
Marko was a 14 year old boy who had a strange big mole on the side of his brownish skil turning black slowly, the bones of his body were quite prominent due to the fact that his skin had shriveled up almost as if he had spent an hour in a river. Kain then moved away from the kid, after patting him on the back and in the mean time he wiped his dust filled hand on his white tank top.
"Goddamn can someone please fix global warming?" Kain muttered to himself, as he wiped his sweat again.
The sun was setting and the owners of their contract had departed to their mansions too so currently the work force was reducing, since the poor labours had family to feed.
"Goodbye kid" Jules told Kain who had a duffle bag slinged over his shoulders, carrying food for his sick mother and father.
"Goodbye old man" Kain told him with a small smile, as his eye drifted towards the pouch of condom that was hurriedly placed in the right pocket of the tattered pants, looks like he was going to his favourite brothel today....
Oh well, sometimes enjoyment was an essential part of a human's life which those without the wretched Z-gene could really see, Kain thought in his mind as he scratched the side of his neck which had a slight pimple-like bump on it due to a bite of an angry mosquito.
He started to walk the usual path he took to his home, as he hummed a tune of an old song set far back into the past, his head was bobbing to imaginary beat as he watched the travels of the flying cars and the hustle of those without the Z--gene.
He took a detour to the right, as he entered a narrow alley which would lead to another street. But to his surprise the damp alley which was vacate usually half of the time, had a woman kneeling in front of him.
She had long flowing white locks, and a slightly shriveled figure whose outline he could faintly see from the hospital blue robe she was wearing. Once she was beautiful that he could easily figure, due to the amount of presence she carried with herself almost like a queen.
As he stepped closer, his right foot fell upon a puddle causing the woman to suddenly stiffen up, her pointed ears suddenly perked up as she turned and once he saw her face, he stepped back in surprise but not in fear for that emotion had been removed from him during his toddler years.
A sickly pale hue she had to her skin, and her eyes were red almost blood red, the corners of her plump lips had blood trickling down.
"Help" She faintly whispered as she twitched almost as if she was undergoing seizures, and so he quickly came close holding her in her kneeling form not letting her fall.
She needs a hospital, Kain thought, she must be sick probably poisoned. He picked her up, almost as if he was lifting his future bride with the tenderness he showed to the light weighted body.
Her eyes snapped to his direction and a small smile broke out on her face which accentuated her features.
A brave good man, she must have thought judging by how she was looking at him.
Kain took a deep breath and just as he was about to leave the alley, taking her to the hospital. He suddenly stopped, as he could see a faint outline of a man, emerging from the darkness of the other side.
The girl must have knew him, since she stiffened in the embrace of Kain and then she started to shake. Oh, Kain thought in surprise becoming alert due to her shivering at the mysterious man, she is scared, this must mean he is the one who attacked her.
As the mysterious man stepped completely out of the shadow, Kain was surprised for he recognised the armour and the badge the man wore.
Hunter's Extermination Team
A specialised team that focused more on ending the lives of rogue monster masters rather than capturing them.
The badge showed that the man belonged to the rank of Dog, which slightly surprised Kain for this woman may be too valuable for them.
After all the rank of Dog, doesn't mean the person in that division is low no it means they are more like police dogs, who will sniff out the criminal but they were also given the allowance to kill, so more like hunting dogs that were ruthless and unpredictable.
The armor that covered the body of the man, looked like a grey wolf almost giving him the shape of a werewolf from which Kain understood that, his spirit monster was probably a wolf. Because in their world, the hunters acquire a part of their bonded monster's powers not whole of course which was why they wore such armors and equipments to further amplify their received strength.
"No please don't let him get me! Please...." The woman in his grasp, begged him looking at him with tears and somewhere in his mind, he thought the red eyes reminded him of someone who he loved dearly but didn't remember.
"Hand over the girl boy" The growl of the wolf came from the other side as Kain's eyes remained fixed against the gaze of the girl, feeling his heart started to heat rapidly.
What was happening to him he didn't know nor did he register the wolf's words, why wasn't he handing the girl away instead of meddling with the business of other people. He was supposed to be only interested in his own life not in the life of other's that's what he made his motto but then why did she strike a particularly sore chord of his heart which he didn't even remember.
"Didn't you hear what I said?" The wolf's talon reached forward to grasp the girl not even caring about the boy since he couldn't detect any Z-gene, meaning he was a cowering pathetic normal.
And at the exact moment the claws grazed the soft skin of the screaming girl leaving a slight red mark, the wolf was sent flying out of the alley.
