Creed paced back and forth, glaring at the glowing system window floating before him. His mind raced with questions as his frustration built.
"Why can't I see the description of this ability?" he muttered under his breath.
His eyes locked onto the word Nyxara, ominously highlighted in black, the section for its description containing only question marks.
He rubbed his temples, trying to piece together why. "Is this a glitch?" he wondered aloud. "But the system's been perfect so far. It doesn't make mistakes."
He had read dozens of system novels in his past life and not one of them had glitched. He refused to believe his case would be different!
He paced a few more steps before stopping and frowning. "Or maybe it's incomplete? Like… I need to unlock something first." That thought made some sense, but his gut told him there was more to it.
Then a darker idea crept into his mind, making his stomach churn. "What if the system is hiding it from me because it's too dangerous? What if I'm not ready? Then why bother giving it to me in the first place?"
He paused, staring at his hands. The air around him seemed heavier, the dark aura of Nyxara pressing against his thoughts.
Indeed, the aura of this new Bloodline Ability was just too sinister. It gave even him, the wielder, chills.
Shaking off the discomfort, Creed sighed. "Guessing won't help. Time to focus on what I can figure out."
He turned to Dagga, who was crouched nearby, his sharp claws idly scraping lines into a rock. The fiend demon looked smug, as if basking in its newfound strength.
"Hey, Dagga," Creed called. The demon's glowing red eyes flicked up to him. "What does your new ability do?"
Dagga's sharp teeth gleamed in a grin. "You've asked the right demon. My ability makes me... the Son of Shadows."
Creed raised an eyebrow. "Son of Shadows? That sounds dramatic."
Dagga stood, its towering frame looming over Creed, and activated its ability.
The air around the demon shifted, growing colder and darker as shadows seemed to crawl up its body like living things.
Its skin darkened to an inky black, and its already menacing form became even more terrifying.
Creed watched with growing intrigue. "Alright, shadow boy, show me what's changed."
Dagga flexed its claws and began to move. Its body blurred as it darted left, then right, its speed so fast Creed struggled to follow.
"I feel... empty," Dagga said, throwing punches into the air. "Light. Like a shadow."
Its punches sliced through the air with sharp precision, each movement faster and more fluid than before.
Then, Dagga stopped and grinned. "And it's not just speed." It struck a rock with its shadow coated arm.
The shadows seemed to absorb the momentum of the impact, slowing it until the rock barely shook.
"When I congeal the shadow on my body, it makes me harder to hit. It slows down any strike until it has no power left!"
Creed whistled, impressed despite himself. "So you're faster, harder to hit, and can slow attacks. That's... ridiculous."
Dagga chuckled darkly. "Of course it is. I am a fiend demon, after all. And I haven't even explored the full potential of my Bloodline Ability"
Creed couldn't help but smirk. "If your ability is this overpowered, then Nyxara must be insane."
He looked at his hands and decided to give it a try. Despite the ominous aura Nyxara emitted, Creed wanted to still give it a try.
He was extremely curious about the power that resided within him and trusted that the system wouldn't give him something that would harm him.
So after taking a deep breath, he summoned Nyxara.
Ooom!
The instant he activated this ability, the world around him shifted instantly. Colours drained away, leaving everything bathed in shadow.
The temperature plummeted, and a growing silence engulfed him. Creed's hearing dulled significantly, but oddly, his vision became sharper—no, perfect.
He could see every detail of the darkened world as if it were illuminated just for him!
Dagga's gasp broke the stillness. "You… you… you look just like a demon!" Despite the demon being a few metres away from him, Creed barely heard it.
But when it registered, his heart skipped a beat. "What?" He turned to the black watered river nearby and leaned over its reflective surface. His breath caught in his throat.
His entire body was covered in smoky black runes, each one pulsing with an eerie, rhythmic glow. They looked like runes of some ancient language.
His eyes had also transformed into pitch-black voids, devoid of any whites. But what truly made his blood run cold was the third eye on his forehead, oozing sinister purple energy that seemed alive.
Creed groaned internally. 'Why do I have to look like this?' he muttered. 'Couldn't I look cool instead of terrifying?' But there was no time to dwell on his appearance. He focused on the sensations running through his body.
"How do I feel?" he murmured, clenching his fists. There was a lightness to him, like gravity itself had loosened its hold. He decided to test it, taking a cautious step forward.
The moment his foot hit the ground, his body shot forward like a bullet. He crossed ten metres in an instant, stopping with a skid.
"Holy—" Creed stumbled, catching himself just in time.
Dagga's jaw dropped. "Did you just—"
"—cross ten metres instantly!" Creed finished, his voice brimming with excitement. His mind raced. 'This speed... it's insane! I'm already as fast as a normal warrior of the second stage!"
He flexed his fingers, marvelling at the raw power coursing through him. The shadows around him seemed alive, waiting for his command.
But before he could explore further, a distant sound broke through the eerie silence—a steady rhythm of hooves pounding against the ground.
Creed froze. His enhanced vision picked up movement in the distance. Dagga tensed, its claws ready.
"Someone's coming," Creed said, his voice low and cautious.
