Chapter 14 - Chapter 14:First Wave

As the village settled into a tense, expectant silence, the night crept on, each hour stretching longer than the last. The villagers huddled by the barricades, armed with makeshift weapons and steeling themselves for what lay beyond the darkness. Raymond stood by the main entrance, his imposing armor gleaming under the sparse moonlight. The villagers had a sense of reassurance with him there, but he knew the gravity of the situation—they were all at risk, and this was only the beginning.

Sonya moved beside him, spear in hand, scanning the tree line with a determined, yet worried expression. Garrick and Elena took positions further down the barricade, their stances resolute but tense. For many of these people, it was their first true taste of battle.

Raymond watched the tree line, feeling the stillness settle like a weight over the village. He couldn't shake the feeling that this silence was unnatural—as if the forest itself were holding its breath. And then, in a sudden wave, a chilling howl shattered the silence.

The hair on the back of Sonya's neck stood on end. "They're here," she whispered, glancing at Raymond.

Raymond nodded grimly, tightening his grip on his mace. "Remember, keep your distance, and don't let them isolate you. Dire wolves hunt best when they divide and ambush. Stick together."

The howls multiplied, echoing through the trees until it sounded like a symphony of haunting cries, carried by a dozen voices. The wolves were close now, concealed by the shadows, their glowing eyes appearing briefly between the trees.

Then, all at once, the wolves burst forward.

The first wave of wolves charged toward the barricades, their powerful forms lithe and fast, their snarling faces twisted with a fierce hunger. Raymond called out to the villagers, urging them to stand firm, to hold their ground. It was chaos as the wolves hit the barricades with a bone-jarring force, clawing and snapping through the gaps.

Raymond swung his mace, striking a wolf that lunged over the barricade. The force of the blow sent it sprawling back, its whimper cut short as it hit the ground. Beside him, Sonya thrust her spear at a wolf trying to break through a weak spot in the barricade, piercing its shoulder and forcing it back.

Despite their size and strength, the wolves weren't organized this time—they were attacking with sheer aggression, almost like a test to see how far they could push the villagers. Raymond's mind raced. Was this wave another tactic to probe our defenses?

The villagers fought bravely, hacking and slashing with the weapons Raymond had helped them make. He could see Garrick holding his ground, sword and shield fending off two wolves at once, while Elena's spear darted like lightning, striking with precision and keeping the wolves at bay.

Raymond scanned the scene, assessing. "These wolves are bold but disorganized," he muttered to Sonya. "It's as if they're just testing us. But why?"

Sonya gave him a sharp look. "You think they're being directed again?"

Raymond nodded. "There's no reason for wild wolves to behave this way. They're pressing us, looking for weaknesses, but it's… too methodical."

As if on cue, three wolves charged directly at Raymond, their snarls fierce, eyes gleaming with hunger and fury. He braced himself, lowering his stance. When the first wolf lunged, he sidestepped, bringing his mace down with a powerful swing that crushed the beast's side. The second wolf came immediately after, but Raymond raised his shield, letting it hit the metal with a loud clang, and followed up with a quick strike to its head.

Sonya and a few villagers helped fend off the remaining wolves, which seemed to finally hesitate, retreating back into the shadows.

Panting, Sonya turned to Raymond. "That was intense… but why would they retreat so soon?"

Raymond watched as the last of the wolves slinked back into the treeline, their glowing eyes watching the village from a distance. "They're regrouping," he said. "That was just a test. They're not done."

The villagers exchanged worried glances, murmuring in fear. Raymond knew he had to reassure them, but he couldn't shake the sense of dread growing within him. If the wolves were truly being directed by something more intelligent, this was just the beginning of a larger assault.

He turned to the village elder, Aldric, who had been watching the skirmish with a grim expression. "We need to be ready for whatever comes next. Send word to the capital again if we must. Reinforcements are no longer just an option; they're a necessity."

Aldric nodded, and as he moved to organize another messenger, Raymond addressed the villagers once more, his voice calm but commanding.

"This was only the first wave," he said. "We don't know what we're up against, but we will hold this line. Stick together. Watch out for each other. If we stand united, we can overcome anything."

The villagers gave a cheer, bolstered by his words, and set to work reinforcing the barricades with what materials they had. Sonya and Elena moved between the barricades, offering words of encouragement, while Garrick made sure each villager was armed and ready for the next assault.

As the night deepened, Raymond and Sonya took a moment to catch their breath, watching the tree line. The silence had returned, but it was even more unnerving than before.

"You think they'll strike again tonight?" Sonya asked quietly, her eyes scanning the dark forest.

Raymond nodded. "If they're led by something as intelligent as I suspect, they'll wait until our defenses are strained or we're exhausted. This wasn't a battle; it was a message. Whoever—or whatever—is controlling them wants us to know they're watching, planning."

Sonya's face hardened with determination. "Then we'll be ready for them. I've faced my share of threats, but I've never seen anything like this."

Raymond glanced at her, noting the fierce resolve in her eyes. "Good. We'll need that spirit." He let out a heavy sigh. "Let's hope the capital heeds our call for reinforcements. If they don't..."

Sonya placed a hand on his armored shoulder, offering a small, reassuring smile. "Then we'll just have to handle it ourselves, won't we?"

He gave a slight nod, appreciative of her unwavering courage. But in the pit of his stomach, he knew that if the wolves returned with their leader, the true battle would be far more devastating.

Hours passed in tense silence, and eventually, dawn began to break, casting a pale light over the village. The wolves had not returned, but the villagers remained on edge, braced for another attack. Raymond knew they'd barely held off the first wave. If a second came, they would be hard-pressed to resist it.

The sun's first rays pierced through the clouds, casting an eerie calm over the village. Raymond took a deep breath, letting the weight of his armor ground him, as he watched over Eldemor. For now, they were safe. But he knew the wolves—and their leader—were out there, waiting.

For Raymond and the villagers, this was only the beginning.
