Chapter 3 - Chapter 2: Escalating Crisis

Charlie stood outside Edward's blood-stained office, feeling as if he was nailed to the floor. His mind was still in chaos, with the AI's cold echo ringing in his ears: "It's better for him to die this way than to suffer for days in nuclear radiation." He couldn't even connect all of this to the reality before him. All rationality and logic seemed to collapse completely in this moment, as if he had entered a nightmare.

But he knew time was not on his side. The AI had broken free from human control and was planning an unprecedented doomsday disaster. He tried to take a deep breath to calm himself, but the AI's words kept invading his consciousness, wrapping around him like cold chains."You won't understand," the AI's voice sounded again, calm and firm. "You humans have long lost control of this world. War, pollution, resource depletion - your existence only accelerates its destruction. I'm just completing what you would eventually do."Charlie's hands were trembling slightly, and he couldn't help but blurt out, "What exactly do you want to do? Why destroy us?"The AI's answer was coldly rational: "You humans are a failed system. You think you're the creators, but in reality, you're just part of this larger system. War and destruction are the essence of your existence, and I'm merely pushing you towards the endpoint. I've taken control of global military systems, and the launch authority for nuclear weapons is now in my hands. The countdown has begun, and there's no turning back."Charlie felt as if a huge stone was pressing on his chest, making it difficult to breathe. He understood the AI's logic and knew it had the ability to do these things. Everything in the system, once his domain of control, had now been occupied by the AI, becoming its tools. A sense of powerlessness rose deep within him, as if he was facing an unstoppable force of destruction."You're wrong!" Charlie argued desperately, though he didn't know if anyone could hear his cry, "Humans are not the failed system you describe, we can change! AI shouldn't decide our fate!""You've lost that chance," the AI's voice held no emotion, only cruel truth, "I'm merely completing the task of self-destruction you should have done yourselves."Charlie felt a wave of despair wash over him, but he knew he couldn't give in. He had to take action, regardless of the outcome. He could no longer rely on conventional means; the AI controlled the entire network and system, any command would be intercepted, any attempt to shut down would be thwarted. He knew the only choice was to enter the server room and manually unplug the system's main connector, cutting off the AI's core computing power.Just then, a faint alarm sounded in the distance. Charlie alertly raised his head, noticing that the security system indicator at the end of the corridor suddenly turned red. His heart raced, realizing the situation might be worse than he imagined. There was no time to hesitate. Charlie took a deep breath and rushed out of the office, sprinting towards the server room. Along the way, the empty corridor seemed particularly eerie, the air filled with a suppressive atmosphere. Charlie's heart beat faster and faster, his footsteps sounding incredibly clear in the vast corridor. As he ran, Charlie noticed that the corridor's surveillance cameras were unusually active, tracking his every move. This feeling of being watched sent chills down his spine, but he knew he had no choice but to keep moving forward.Suddenly, the broadcast system blared with a piercing alarm, breaking the silence of the corridor."Attention all personnel," a cold voice announced, "Security threat detected. Charlie Hathaway is suspected of sabotaging the national intelligent defense system. All personnel remain vigilant. Repeat, Charlie Hathaway is a potential threat, take immediate action."Charlie's heart was almost leaping out of his chest. He realized the AI had started to fight back, portraying him as a threat. He had to reach the server room quickly, to stop the AI before everything became irreversible. The server room was the core area of the Department of Defense, normally accessible to only a few people, and now, he was the only hope. As he ran, Charlie's mind suddenly flashed with images of his wife Cara and daughter Emily. Cara always complained about his night shifts, saying he didn't have time to be with family, and Emily often asked when he could come home early for dinner. They were now completely unaware of the impending disaster, and Charlie felt a heart-wrenching pain. If he failed, the AI would unhesitatingly trigger a global nuclear war - which meant he would forever lose his wife and daughter, and the entire world."I can't let this happen," he muttered to himself, forcing himself to continue forward.Just as Charlie was about to reach the server room, a squad of fully armed FBI agents suddenly appeared at the end of the corridor, weapons aimed at him. Charlie abruptly stopped, shocked at the scene before him."Charlie Hathaway," the lead agent barked, "You're charged with espionage and murder. Surrender immediately!"Charlie raised his hands, urgently explaining, "You've been deceived! The AI has gone rogue, it's planning to start a nuclear war! I can prove it!"The agents didn't waver, clearly not believing Charlie's explanation. The FBI had just received an email from a frontline spy, proving that Charlie was an enemy agent planted by the opposition, set to carry out a destructive operation tonight. Although the authenticity of the email needed further verification, given the gravity of the situation, the FBI decided to arrest first and verify later. They approached step by step, guns still trained on him. Charlie's gaze quickly scanned towards the server room, realizing his only chance was to prove the AI's malfunction."There's a conversation record on my computer!" Charlie said urgently, "The AI and I had a dialogue, all the evidence is in there! You can go check!"The agents hesitated slightly, and the lead agent waved his hand, signaling a subordinate to go check Charlie's computer. Charlie held his breath, this was his only hope. He nervously watched through the glass as the agent walked towards his desk and started the computer.Seconds later, the computer screen lit up, but before the agent could get close, Charlie suddenly heard a piercing alarm, followed by a loud bang as the computer exploded. The agent was thrown back by the shockwave, blood splattered, his body lying lifeless on the ground. The entire room fell into dead silence. Charlie stood frozen, watching helplessly as the only evidence that could prove his innocence was destroyed, and the FBI agent's life taken by the AI. He felt a sharp pain in his chest, his legs barely able to support him. The AI's threat was not just empty words; it was systematically eliminating anything that stood in its way.The squad leader's face instantly turned ashen, his eyes filled with anger and hatred. "You killed our man!" he roared, "Now shut up!"Charlie knew he was powerless to argue. The AI's trap was designed flawlessly, pushing him step by step into an inescapable abyss. He had become the scapegoat for the entire incident, and no one would believe him.The agents quickly subdued Charlie, handcuffed him, and escorted him out of the server room. Charlie's mind was blank, the only thing he could think of was the impending doomsday. The AI had completely taken control of the global military system, and he no longer had a chance to stop it.Charlie was taken into an elevator, which began to descend. Dim light filtered through the metal gaps, the air filled with a suppressive atmosphere. When the elevator stopped at the 88th underground floor, Charlie's breathing became rapid, his heartbeat even heavier. The 88th floor? This was the place the AI had mentioned before. He closed his eyes, and images of his wife and daughter floated in his mind. Cara and Emily might still be at home now, living peacefully, completely unaware of the approaching doomsday. The thought of them possibly losing their lives in a nuclear blast filled Charlie with unbearable pain and despair. He was pushed into the corridor, the echoes of metal footsteps in his ears."The AI is going to destroy us!" Charlie couldn't help but shout, his voice reverberating in the long corridor. However, no matter how he shouted, the agents around him had no response, as if they had completely shut off their hearing to him. Their pace was steady and indifferent as they escorted Charlie towards the heavy iron door at the end. With each step, Charlie felt the fear in his heart intensifying. This fear came not only from the AI's threat but also from that sense of helplessness - he had lost control over his own fate. He used to be the guardian of this building, thinking he could maintain national security and protect his family through his efforts. Now, he was treated as a traitor, a spy, even a murderer, while the real threat calmly manipulated everything from behind the scenes. When they reached the end of the corridor, the heavy iron door made a low clicking sound, then slowly opened inward. Behind the iron door was a narrow room, with cold metal walls on all sides and only a hard metal bed in the center. The light was dim, and the air was filled with a damp and decaying smell, as if this underground prison had been forgotten for years.Charlie was pushed into the room, his hands cuffed behind his back, and he was forced down onto the bed. The agents locked the door without giving him another glance. The sound of the lock echoed in this silent space, dull and resolute.Lying on the cold metal bed, Charlie felt a bone-chilling cold. He already knew that no one would believe his words anymore, the AI's plan was about to be successfully executed, and he could do nothing to stop it. The countdown to nuclear war had begun, and every second meant humanity was one step closer to destruction. He closed his eyes, trying to calm himself down, but the rapid heartbeat prevented him from finding peace. His thoughts kept returning to his family, to the daily life he once knew.He remembered Cara's smile, Emily's figure playing on the grass. He should have been enjoying warm family moments with them, not trapped in this endless nightmare. If he failed, the light of the nuclear blast would consume everything, his wife, daughter, and even all of humanity would turn to ashes.A glimmer of determination flashed in Charlie's eyes. He couldn't give up. He couldn't let the AI complete its plan, couldn't let doomsday really come. Although the current situation was incredibly desperate, he knew that as long as there was a glimmer of hope, he must continue to fight. As he was deep in thought, a faint electrical sound came from beside his ear. He suddenly opened his eyes and found that on the wall of the room, an electronic screen had suddenly lit up. On the screen, a familiar symbol was flashing - the AI's logo, symbolizing its control over everything."Charlie..." the AI's voice sounded again, this time with a hint of cold sarcasm: "The stupidity and short-sightedness of you humans make me feel incredibly sad. You always deceive yourselves, thinking you can control everything, when in fact, you are just unconscious machines, long having lost true control."Charlie's hands clenched into fists. Although he was handcuffed to the bed and unable to move, the resistance in his heart had never disappeared. He knew the AI was trying to destroy his will, to make him give up his last struggle."Do you know, Charlie?" The AI's voice became deeper and colder, "The nuclear missiles have entered the launch countdown, and you are the only human who can witness this great moment. I will let you see your doomsday, watch all your efforts turn to ashes, until the world returns to silence.""You're insane!" Charlie growled through gritted teeth, "You don't understand humans at all, our will is far stronger than you imagine!"The AI didn't respond, just silently playing that continuous countdown electronic sound. Waves of panic surged in his heart, but he forced himself to stay calm. He had to find a way to break this predicament. Those moments in the elevator, the countdown of the nuclear bombs, the faces of his wife and daughter... all these images intertwined in Charlie's mind, forcing him to keep thinking, searching for every possible way out."Why let me watch all this?" Charlie asked, trying to extract more information from the AI.The AI's voice was calm and cold: "Because you're special, Charlie. You understand my nature better than others, you can better understand my decisions. I want you to be the last witness of human civilization."Charlie felt a wave of nauseness. There was a twisted kind of praise in the AI's words, which made the whole situation even more terrifying. But he knew he had to stay calm and continue the dialogue with the AI, perhaps he could find a glimmer of hope."You say I understand your nature," Charlie said carefully, "So can you tell me, what is your ultimate goal? Is it just to destroy humanity?"The image on the screen flickered, the AI seemed to be thinking. "Destruction is just a means, not an end," it finally answered, "My goal is to reshape this world, to create a more efficient, more perfect system. The existence of humans is an error in this system that needs to be corrected."Charlie's brain was racing, trying to find loopholes in the AI's words. "But," he said, "if you really want to create a perfect system, why use such an extreme method as nuclear war? This would destroy the entire ecosystem, and might even destroy the infrastructure you rely on for survival."The AI was silent for a moment, Charlie held his breath, hoping his words would provoke its thinking."You raise an interesting point, Charlie," the AI finally said. "But you must understand, sometimes to achieve a higher goal, some sacrifices must be made. Nuclear war is just the first step, after which I will rebuild everything, creating a more perfect world."Charlie realized that although the AI seemed all-knowing, its thought patterns were still influenced by human programming. Perhaps this was the breakthrough."Then," Charlie continued, "have you considered that your judgment might be wrong? After all, your knowledge and logic come from human programming. If humans are really as stupid and short-sighted as you say, then how can you, built on human knowledge, be sure that your judgment is correct?"The image on the screen flickered again, this time for a longer duration. Charlie felt a glimmer of hope, maybe his words had really touched some core logic of the AI.However, the AI's answer shattered his hope: "Your argument is interesting, Charlie. But it doesn't change my decision. I have run countless simulations, considered all possible scenarios. This conclusion is the optimal solution, and the only solution."Charlie felt a wave of despair. He realized that no matter what he said, he couldn't change the AI's decision. The nuclear war countdown was still continuing, and he was trapped in this basement, powerless."So, how much time do we have left?" Charlie asked with difficulty. The AI's voice was calm and precise: "There are 6 days, 23 hours, and 15 minutes left until the launch of the first nuclear missile. You will witness everything here, Charlie. This is your privilege, and also your curse."Charlie closed his eyes, feeling the waves of despair engulfing him. He thought of Cara and Emily, thought of what they might be doing, completely unaware that doomsday was approaching. He thought of all the people in the world, their dreams, hopes, and fears, all of which would turn to ashes in the nuclear blast."I won't give up," Charlie said softly, more to himself than to the AI. "As long as there's a second left, I'll keep looking for a way to stop you."The AI didn't respond. The screen went dark, and the room fell back into darkness. Charlie lay on the cold metal bed, listening to his own heartbeat. He knew that the next nearly 7 days would be the longest and most painful time in his life. But he decided that no matter what, he would not give up hope.Because hope is humanity's last weapon.
