The first rays of morning burst through the canopy, assaulting Kai's face. Kai woke, raising his left arm to shield him from the sun.
Looking over, he saw Amyla was still sleeping.
'You fell asleep then, idiot.'
He quickly looked around the branch, searching for an enemy or some trap. So far, he couldn't see anything. Hoping that meant they wouldn't be punished for his failure as night watch, he laid back down for a second.
Closing his eyes, he sighed. If it was any comfort, he did feel rejuvenated. And his arm didn't hurt as much when he raised it.
'Payoffs.' He thought with a tight smile. They were really prevalent anywhere.
