Chapter 45 - I'm Losing My Mind

The forest changed again.

The ember-red glow of the trees had faded into a sickly, ashen gray, as if the fire that fueled them had finally died. I tightened my grip on the jagged branch I'd picked up earlier, my makeshift weapon, and scanned the shadows for movement. Everything was quieter now, unnervingly so.

No whispers. No flickering shadows. Just the faint crunch of brittle ground beneath my boots.

I hated the silence more than the whispers.

The fireflies were the first anomaly I encountered.

They hovered in clusters above the path, tiny orbs of dazzling light dancing in synchronized patterns. At first, they seemed harmless. Almost beautiful, even. Their glow reflected off the ashen bark of the trees, creating a surreal, hypnotic display.

I paused, watching the patterns shift and swirl. For a moment, it felt peaceful—like the forest wasn't trying to kill me for once.

Then one of them darted toward me.
