Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. Kairan didn't move, his gaze fixed on Meredia. His knuckles were white from gripping the arm of the chair, and his entire focus seemed locked on her, as though by sheer will, he could bring her back. I, however, turned toward the door.
A messenger stood there, his posture straight and respectful. He bowed deeply.
"You Highness, Crown Prince Kairan," he greeted, keeping his voice steady in the presence of my brother's ominous silence. "high Lunarch Ancillin," he continued, turning to me, "the High Sanctifier requests your presence at the temple to deliver your report regarding last night's incident. He also wishes to question Lady Carter."
I nodded, not surprised by the summons. "I'II be there shortly."
