After what felt like hours of magical torment, we finally stopped/ I collapsed onto the chair, limbs splayed out like a drunkard who had hit the jackpot at a tavern. My head lolled back, mouth wide open, and I was pretty sure I looked like an extra from a particularly tragic comedy.

"Well, if magic doesn't kill me, this chair will," I groaned, sinking into its embrace like it was the only friend I had left in this world.

Kairan stood across the room, his face as unreadable as ever. He took one look at me and then glanced out the window, where the first light of dawn was beginning to creep in. "The sun is rising," he said calmly. "You should go and rest now."

I blinked, struggling to comprehend his words through the haze of exhaustion. "Rest? Did I just hear you right? or am I having some sort of magic-induced delusion?"
