Chapter 12 - EPISODE 12: DEAD ENDS AND NEW BEGINNINGS

As Kacey traversed the labyrinthine hallway, the vibrant glow of orange bulbs cast an eerie luminescence upon his determined face. With the compass steadfast in his hand, he charted a westward course, deftly navigating the serpentine path. Undeterred by the frequent dead ends and obstructed passages, Kacey adeptly adjusted his trajectory, ever pressing forward in his relentless pursuit of the western horizon.

"Kacey, are you sure you know where you're going?" Crystal asked, her gentle voice laced with concern as she followed closely behind him. Lan, a boy from another group, trailed behind them.

"Yeah, I'm sure we're on the right path," Kacey replied confidently.

Kacey's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "So, how did you meet Travis?

Crystal's cheeks flushed as she looked down, her hands fluttering nervously. "It's his charming face, his captivating smile...but beyond that, it's how he stands up for everyone, even in the face of his darkest fears."

Kacey's thoughts echoed Crystal's words. "Yah, she's right. That's why he's hated by all the bullies at school - he's recklessly fearless, isn't he?"

Crystal reflected on his friends' qualities. "Whisky's confident in everything he does, although he gets tongue-tied around Sarah. And Sarah and Linda are always there to lift my spirits on my darkest nights."

Crystal's gaze locked onto Kacey's. "And you, Kacey - the thoughtful one who never loses hope. You're always in the game, no matter how slim the chances of winning are. I think Whisky learned that from you, didn't he?"

Her voice softened, a gentle smile spreading across her face. "Besides all these things, you make me smile, Kacey."

Kacey's footsteps halted, his eyes widening in stunned silence. Was Crystal, his long-time crush, really saying such kind and perceptive things about him? She seemed oblivious to Carter's presence, her focus solely on Kacey.

The hallway fell silent, the only sound the faint hum of the orange bulbs. Kacey remained frozen, unsure of how to respond.

"Kacey, what's up?" Crystal asked, her voice tinged with concern, breaking the spell that had held him entranced.

Kacey remained still, his silence a palpable force. Crystal's concern deepened, and she took a step forward, peering into his face. His eyes were fixed on something ahead, his gaze unwavering.

Curious, Crystal followed his line of sight. Her eyes widened in surprise. "What?! It's a dead end!"

She turned to Kacey, a hint of amusement in her voice. "I thought you said you knew where you were going."

Kacey's expression remained calm, his eyes never leaving the compass in his hand. "I did. This path is just blocked. That's all."

His thumb brushed against the compass, and the timer began to count down: 24:09...20:08...24:07.

"I hate to think about it, but this maze is enormous," Crystal said, her voice laced with concern. "With the time left, I think we're doomed. We'll just keep hitting dead ends."

Lan, who had been quietly observing, spoke up. "What do you think will happen when the timer runs out?"

Crystal's eyes sparkled with a mix of fear and dark humor. "Maybe they'll just blow up the whole maze and squash us all inside."

She walked over to Kacey, who had slumped down, his back against the wall, his eyes fixed on the countdown. Crystal sat down beside him, her presence a silent offer of comfort.

"What is broken can be fixed," Crystal whispered, her voice a soothing balm. "What hurts can be healed. And no matter how dark it gets, the sun will always rise again."

She slid down beside Kacey, resting her head on his shoulder. "I know in a situation like this, you'd say it's better to die trying than to die hopelessly."

Kacey's lips curled into a soft smile. "Yeah, you're right," he chuckled. "I don't know what got into me. Crystal, I'm still in this with you."

His voice was filled with renewed determination.

Crystal lifted her head, a soft smile on her lips. "That's the Kacey I know," she whispered.

Their eyes met, and for five seconds, time stood still. The air was electric with tension as they locked gazes. Kacey was captivated by the sparkling green of Crystal's eyes.

"Green sparkling eyes, her name is really Crystal," he thought, his heart skipping a beat.

The world around them melted away, leaving only the two of them, suspended in a moment of raw anticipation. Crystal's sapphire-like eyes shone with a mix of nervousness and longing, drawing Kacey in with an irresistible force.

Just as it seemed like time was about to stand still, Crystal suddenly cried out, "Ow!" She jumped up, frantically searching her pockets. "Sorry," Kacey said, his face flushing with concern.

Crystal pulled out a crumpled piece of paper and unfolded it. "Oh, it's the map," she said, a look of surprise crossing her face. But to Kacey's shock, she began tearing the map into pieces.

"Wait!" Kacey shouted, his eyes widening in excitement. As he watched Crystal tear the papers, something had caught his attention. He quickly grabbed one of the torn sheets and examined it closely. Suddenly, the cryptic clue they had received earlier flashed into his mind...

Kacey's eyes locked onto a small, wrinkled corner on the torn paper he held. It appeared to be a hidden layer, concealed beneath a transparent plastic sheet. He carefully placed the torn paper on a flat surface and covered it with a piece of plastic paper. In an instant, a trail of a road appeared, as if by magic.

"Whoa, we need to put the papers together to make it whole," Kacey exclaimed.

Crystal quickly began gathering the torn papers she had scattered earlier. It dawned on Kacey that she had torn the papers not because they were useless, but to create a diversion, breaking the tension of the moment.

Kacey scrutinized the piece of paper, searching for any hidden clues. Carter, trying to lighten the mood, broke the silence. "Guys, you know I've been here all along, right?" He chuckled, referencing the awkward moment they'd just shared.

Crystal shot him a stern look, attempting to maintain a serious tone. "Can you please just focus on what Kacey's found?"

"Wait!" Kacey exclaimed, "I think I have a map." He rummaged through his papers and produced a crumpled sheet. "Here," he said, handing it to Crystal.

As Crystal unfolded the paper, it revealed a large map. They spread it out on the floor, and Kacey tried to remove the thin, transparent layer on top. It wouldn't budge, so he carefully made a small tear in the map. The layer peeled off easily, revealing the map's details.

"It's a map," Crystal said, confusion etched on her face. "But what's it for?"

Kacey's eyes widened in shock as he studied the map. "It's a map... for the big maze," he breathed.

Whisky's mind was racing as he pondered their next move. "In any path I make, I need to head west," he thought to himself. "But that doesn't necessarily increase my chances of escaping this massive maze. All roads lead home, but in a maze, only one path leads to freedom."

Their current path was blocked, and a new route beckoned to their right. Whisky hesitated, weighing his options. Sarah noticed his uncertainty and asked, "Whisky, what's wrong?"

He didn't want to take the right turn, as it would mean they'd be heading east. His strategy had always been to choose paths that led west, and he was reluctant to deviate from that plan.

Whisky's thoughts swirled as he gazed at the blocked path ahead. "In any path I make, I need to head west," he reminded himself. "But that doesn't guarantee escape from this massive maze. All roads lead home, but in a maze, only one path leads to freedom."

A new route beckoned to their right, but Whisky hesitated. Sarah noticed his uncertainty and asked, "Whisky, what's wrong?"

He frowned, reluctant to take the right turn. It would mean heading east, contradicting his strategy of always choosing paths that led west.

"Whisky, do you know what you're doing?" Linda asked gently. "Aren't you using the Mini Mai Mo game to choose our route?"

Whisky's eyes sparkled with realization. "Even if I always head west, it doesn't mean I'm getting closer to the exit. The exit is still in the west, regardless of the path we take. Maybe the key is to appear like we're heading east, south, or north, and then make a turn to head towards the exit."

A low chuckle rumbled in Whisky's throat as he grasped the clever strategy.

Whisky turned to Linda, scratching the back of his head and closing his eyes with a faint smile. "It's just funny that you're really relying on me, Linda."

Linda raised an eyebrow. "Relying on you? Sarah's the one who's always relying on you."

Sarah's eyes widened in mock offense. "Hey, what's that supposed to mean?"

Whisky chuckled and apologized, "Oh, sorry Linda."

Linda playfully scolded him, "Yeah, you should be! Now, come on, tell us which way to go, already!"

"Don't be too hard on him," Sarah said. "At least he's trying."

"Thanks, Sarah," Whisky replied, his voice laced with frustration. "To be honest, Linda, I don't know what I'm doing. Right now, we're just relying on luck. If it's really on our side, then maybe, just maybe, we'll escape this maze."

Whisky's thoughts drifted to his growing disdain for the game. "I hate this game... truly. You think you've found a promising path, a long one with no obstacles, but then you're faced with a dead end just when you thought you'd finally made it."

His thoughts were interrupted by Linda's urgent voice. "Whisky, what are you thinking? What do we do now?"

"So, you're really counting on me," Whisky said, his eyes locked on the path ahead.

"Just tell us what to do, time is running out!" Linda urged, her voice tinged with desperation.

"Speaking of time, what do we have left?" Whisky asked, flipping his compass to check the timer. The display read "23:09".

"Ha! We've already wasted seven minutes," Whisky exclaimed. "Yeah, you're right, we're running out of time."

With that, they took the right turn and walked about fifteen meters before finding themselves at an intersection. Without hesitation, Whisky took the left turn, picking up speed as they raced against the clock. His strategy was to make turns that would keep them facing west.

As they approached another intersection, Whisky was faced with a choice: left or right. He took the left turn without hesitation, knowing it would keep them on a westerly course.

After walking about twenty-five meters, Whisky's heart sank as he realized they had reached a dead end.

Whisky's heart skipped a beat as a familiar sense of dread washed over him. Was he about to lead them down another path that would only end in a dead end?

Linda stood frozen, her eyes fixed on the wall as if searching for an answer. "What the...?" she trailed off.

Whisky glanced down at the compass, the timer flashing ominously: 18:14. The group's eyes met, their faces reflecting the same unspoken question: Were they really going to make it out in time?
