Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Shadows of the forest

The morning sun rose over the village, painting the rooftops with a golden hue. We gathered in the center of the square, the air filled with a mix of anticipation and anxiety. Yesterday's battle with the Wolf King was still fresh in our minds, but today, a new challenge awaited us.

"We need coins," Aki said, breaking the morning silence. He stood with his sword slung over his shoulder, looking at everyone with a determined expression. "We burned through most of what we earned yesterday just on food and water."

I nodded in agreement, sharing his concern. Our survival depended on those coins, not just for sustenance but for everything else we might need down the line. "Yeah, we've got to start training seriously," I said, glancing at the boys who were still figuring out their weapons. "We need to get stronger. No one's going to carry us in this world."

After pooling our coins, we bought what little food and water we could afford from the system's shop. It wasn't much, but we rationed it carefully, sharing what we had to make sure everyone got enough. The stark reality of our situation was sinking in: everything came at a cost, and we couldn't waste a single point.

With supplies packed, we headed out toward the forest, following the trail left by the girls. They hadn't returned to the safe village yesterday, and we hadn't heard from them since. Worry gnawed at the back of my mind, but I kept it to myself. We had no choice but to find them.

The forest loomed ahead, its canopy thick with leaves that blocked out much of the sunlight. Shadows danced across the ground as we ventured deeper, following the faint path marked by footprints and snapped twigs. The further we went, the quieter it became, save for the rustle of leaves and the occasional distant growl. It felt like we were being watched.

Just then, a group of orcs burst from the underbrush, their green skin glistening in the dappled light. Each of them towered over us, crude weapons in hand and eyes filled with malice. They were level 9, stronger and more vicious than anything we had faced before.

"Get ready!" I shouted, lifting my shield as I charged forward. With a newfound sense of purpose, I activated my latest skill, Shield Rush. Energy surged through me as I dashed forward, slamming my shield into the nearest orc. The impact knocked it off balance, sending it sprawling to the ground.

"Now!" I called out, and my friends moved in quickly, delivering the finishing blows with practiced precision. The first orc fell, dissolving into light, and we regrouped, forming a defensive line with me at the front. My shield absorbed blow after blow as I kept the orcs at bay, buying my teammates time to attack.

Aki swung his sword with renewed vigor, cleaving through the orcs with impressive speed. "We're winning! Just keep it up!" he yelled, encouraging the others as the battle raged on. Those who grew tired rotated behind me, catching their breath while the rest pressed forward.

It was exhausting work, every clash of metal sending jolts up my arms, but I held the line. We moved as one, adapting quickly to the relentless onslaught. After what felt like an eternity, the last orc fell, and the forest grew quiet once more. A notification appeared before me, announcing my new level: 12. Aki grinned, showing his screen; he was up to level 15. Everyone else had gained at least two or three levels, a tangible reminder of how far we had come since the day before.

Panting but exhilarated, we continued deeper into the forest. The sun dipped lower in the sky, painting the horizon in shades of orange and red. We decided to make camp in a small clearing, setting up a simple fire and cooking what little food we had managed to scavenge from our earlier battles. The crackling flames were a comforting presence in the growing darkness, though our minds were far from at ease.

As we settled down to eat, Aki began fiddling with the system's shop, scrolling through the list of items with a frustrated frown. "Guys, there's something weird. The shop's got limits," he said, pointing at the screen. "We can't buy high-quality weapons or food beyond basic stuff. It's like we're locked out of anything that could give us a real edge."

"It makes sense," one of our friends muttered, poking at the campfire with a stick. "The safe zone had a timer. The whole system's designed to keep us fighting. We can't hide forever or rely on it too much."

He was right. There was no easy way out of this world. The safety nets were few, and the challenges were endless. We would have to earn everything we needed through hard work and battle.

"It's fine," I said, trying to keep morale up. "We've made it this far, haven't we? We'll figure out the rest. For now, let's just focus on surviving. We're all in this together."

Everyone nodded, and for a moment, the weight of our situation lifted, replaced by a quiet determination. We took turns standing watch, the flickering firelight casting long shadows that danced like phantoms around us. The forest was still, but the distant howls and rustling leaves reminded us that danger was never far away.

I sat by the fire, shield propped up beside me, watching the flames flicker against the night sky. My title, "Tank," still hovered faintly in my vision, a constant reminder of the role I had chosen. I was here to protect, to be the shield that stood between my friends and the darkness beyond.

Tomorrow, we would continue our search for the girls, and whatever else this world had in store for us. But for now, we rested, gathering strength for the battles to come. The night was long, and the road ahead was filled with uncertainty. But as long as we stood together, I knew we could face anything.

With my eyes heavy and the crackling of the fire lulling me to sleep, I whispered a silent promise to myself: I would keep us safe, no matter the cost.
