Chapter 23: Shattered Resolve
The group exited the cavern, their thoughts weighed down by the inscription's ominous message. The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the desolate landscape.
"We need to keep moving," Eun Ha said, her voice firm. "The Shadow Citadel isn't far, and we're running out of time."
Min Jae, ever the optimist, tried to lighten the mood. "Cheer up, everyone. It's not like we're marching to our doom or anything."
No one laughed.
As they pressed on, the terrain became more treacherous. The ground was cracked and uneven, and a chilling wind howled through the air. Jin Soo couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched.
That night, as they set up camp, Jin Soo found himself alone by the fire. Hye Rin approached, her expression uncharacteristically soft. "You're worried about the inscription," she said.
Jin Soo nodded. "How can I ask anyone to make that kind of sacrifice? What if it's me? What if I'm not strong enough?"
Hye Rin placed a hand on his shoulder. "Strength isn't about never being afraid. It's about standing firm despite your fear. You've come this far, Jin Soo. Don't doubt yourself now."
Before he could respond, a distant roar echoed through the night. The group sprang to their feet, weapons drawn. From the darkness emerged a massive shadow creature, its glowing red eyes fixed on them.
"Looks like we've got company," Min Jae said, drawing his blades.
The creature lunged, and the battle began.
