Chapter 33 - Chapter 32: The Fool's New Clothes

CRACKLE!

The sound of flame blazing forth reached my ears when I grabbed hold of the item in the wooden box.

"Huh?"

Suddenly, I felt a strange sensation; like something was being sucked out of me and strangely enough, I knew what it was. It was...

The World Energy.

W-woah!

I recoiled instantly, dropping the strange object in the process.

CLATTER!

The sound of the object dropping back into the box echoed through the chasm as the flickering flame went out.

"W-what was that?!", I exclaimed as I held my hand, the feeling of the World Energy being sucked out from my body was still tingling my flesh, bringing a complicated expression to my face. It wasn't exactly unpleasant, just weird.

It was like running your hand on a smooth wall; an action that gave an irritating sensation.

"Tss..."

I let out a low hiss as I stared in the direction of the box, a difficult expression making its way to my face.

"L-let's try again..."

I told myself as I walked up to the box again and reached for its contents, once again I touched the strange object.

BWOOSH!

An ember of flame blazed forth once again, illuminating the chasm and chasing away the malfeasant darkness.

Once again, I felt the strange feeling; the World Energy was being sucked out from within me. I felt like pulling my hand away but I steeled myself.

Forcing myself not to lose composure, I looked back at the wooden box before gasping,

"A lamp! Finally light at long-"

Grateful as I was for finally being able to see again, I couldn't ignore what I saw next.

W-what the-?!

Books, strange instruments, cooking ware, a long rolled up paper, an odd-looking axe, a bow, an empty quiver and...

Clothes!

Despite all the intriguing items I found in the box, what caught my eyes was a piece of black leather I saw stuffed between two strange instruments.

My hand shot towards the black leather, sticking out and grabbed it.

Y-yes!

The instant I grabbed it, it suddenly fractured into a million tiny shards.

Baffled, I let go of the lamp, forcing the darkness to return and following that, the system spoke.

[You have gained an Epic Item: Veil of the Moon.]

"Ah!", I let out a shaky breath, falling to my hind in bewilderment.

I remained silent for a moment before laughing.

"HAHAHAHAHA!"

"Finally! At long last! I have clothes!"

In that moment, my inner voice chimed in.

You know without context; you sounded so homeless.

SHUT DA-Wait...that actually rhymes...

Of course, I've got that Eminem within me.

Alright, shut up.

I shook my head and then activated my inventory interface.

Inventory!

[Inventory:] School Uniform, Blade of Grass, Rock Pebbles, Twigs, Acolyte Leaves, Glass Bottle, Box of Seasoning, Hunting Knife, Quill-Book, Leather Map, Silver Lining, Veil of the Moon

Veil of the Moon! Describe!

[Inventory:] Veil of the Moon: When the moon rose, darkness blanketed the Earth making the moon the only source of solace. This wear was born to hide that solace from the encroaching and everlasting darkness. This Epic Item has the effect; Starless.

[Effect:] Starless: Even the light of the very stars will never tear the veil of the night.

Great...another ambiguous description...

I grimaced after I finished reading it, before creasing my eyebrows.

I thought about it for a moment before saying with a tone of finality.

"I think I'll assume that it makes me stealthier."

Don't know about that...the way the words are placed is bugging me.

My inner voice spoke in a disgruntled tone.

Figure out it out then Sherlock!

Shut up, Cheap Yuan!

"HRAAH!", I let out an annoyed groan. My inner voice had once again one-upped me.

Tsk...the bastard can't keep getting away with this.

I thought, eager to get back at him before taking a deep breath and calming down.

Letting out a sigh, I turned back to the interface.

When I looked at it, a smile spread across my face.

"Well...what am I waiting for? Let's try it out!"

I got up to my feet and said, "Inventory Open!"

Suddenly, I felt something vanish from my body, leaving me completely naked. I was startled for a moment before realizing that it was just my school uniform. I also felt some seams of the hunter's attire fall off.

Following that, I felt another thing latch onto my body and instantly I felt a pleasant sensation.

So... soft!

I melted in the confines of my new wear; it was so much more comfortable than any other cloth I had worn in my entire life.

"W-woah!", I exclaimed as I checked myself out or rather...made the movements. I couldn't see after all.

But I didn't care about whether I could see it or not, all I cared about was the silky feeling of the cloth.

It was too damn comfortable.

Damn...how come they don't make clothes like these in real life...?

I thought before instantly figuring out the answer.

This is fiction and that was reality.

Here, perfection could be achieved but out there, imperfection was the law.

Suddenly, I felt somber.

Stupid thought! Don't spoil the mood, I just got new clothes!

I shook my head to chase away the thoughts before turning back to box's direction.

"This likely isn't the only item I can salvage from there...in fact, I think am going to be doing a lot of inspecting.", I said as I stretched my fingers.

Approaching the box once again, I grabbed hold of the lamp and once again a flame illuminated the chasm. The irritating feeling returned but I endured it.

"Alright, first things first...", I said before raising the lamp up.

Bringing a hand to my chin, I swirled it around, inspecting it.

"Hmm..."

The lamp in question wasn't very extravagant. Being plainly cylindrical in shape, having black for color along with some stripes of ashen brown and wielding a chain with a metal ring attached to it which was covered with strange cryptic text. The lamp looked very minimalist, like it was merely an experiment.

"I like it though...", I spoke with a small smile as I examined the plain lamp, "Has a nice aesthetic."

I bet you're into plain girls who cum non-stop in the bed.

Ayo! What the hell?! You're gonna get me cancelled!

I grimaced at my inner voice's profane tongue. Even though I regarded myself abnormal, my inner voice's comment was just down bad.

And how the hell did he draw that kinda conclusion? I just like the lamp that's all.

I facepalmed and shook my head dejectedly before turning back to the lamp.

My face had a thoughtful look as I said, "Oh well...I guess it will work."

Store.

With that, the lamp shattered into a hundred shards and the system spoke.

[You have gained a Common Item: Inept Lantern.]
