Chapter 11 - Chapter 10: Fractured Truths**

Elena stood there, her mind reeling, her pulse racing. The words Jack had just spoken felt like a freight train barreling through her chest, leaving behind a wake of disbelief. Her father had been involved in something dangerous? Her mother had known? And she… she was meant to be a part of it?

She shook her head as if trying to clear away the fog that clouded her thoughts. It didn't make sense. None of it did. *How could she have been a part of something she knew nothing about?*

"Jack…" Her voice trembled. "This doesn't make sense. Are you telling me that my family wasn't just… normal? That everything I thought I knew about them is a lie?"

Jack's eyes were filled with sorrow, but there was no turning back now. He had said it, and now the truth was out there, waiting to be understood, whether she was ready or not.

"I wish I could say it's not true," Jack said, his voice rough. "But it is. Your father was involved in something much bigger than any of us. And your mother… she knew, Elena. She knew and tried to protect you from it. But it was too late."

Elena took a step back, feeling the weight of his words crush her. The idea that her parents, the people she had once trusted above all others, had been hiding something from her—something dangerous—was too much to process. She wanted to scream, to run away, but her legs felt like lead.

Jack must have seen the look on her face, because he softened his gaze. "You need to understand, Elena. This isn't about blame. It's about survival. And right now, you need to understand the choices they made."

Her head spun. "The choices they made? They lied to me! They let me live in ignorance while—" She stopped herself, her breath coming faster. She was spiraling, caught in the undertow of emotion and shock.

"They didn't want you to be part of it," Jack said quickly, his tone urgent. "They didn't want you to carry that burden, but they didn't have a choice either. The things they were involved in—things that were so much bigger than your family—they were tied to something ancient, something that had been passed down for generations. And when your father tried to break free from it… well, it all started to fall apart."

A chill ran through Elena. The idea of ancient ties, generational secrets—it sounded like something out of a twisted fairy tale, a nightmare her parents had shielded her from. But now, standing here, with Jack's words hanging in the air, it didn't feel so far-fetched anymore. It felt real. *Too real.*

"Ancient?" Elena echoed, her voice small. "What are you talking about? What kind of thing could be passed down through generations?"

Jack's jaw tightened, his eyes flickering with something she couldn't read. "It's hard to explain. But it has to do with an old society—an organization that's been around for centuries. They've always existed in the shadows, pulling strings, controlling things from behind the scenes. And your family…" He paused, taking a deep breath as if the words themselves caused him physical pain. "Your family was involved in it. *Your bloodline*. Your father didn't choose it, not at first. But once he was in, there was no way out."

Elena's head spun, her thoughts whirling. Her hands were clammy as she gripped the railing of the front steps, trying to steady herself. She needed to understand. She needed to hear it all, no matter how impossible it seemed.

"Tell me everything," she said, her voice barely a whisper.

Jack hesitated, glancing over his shoulder toward the house. "Not here. It's not safe. We're too exposed. Let's go somewhere private."

Without waiting for her response, Jack turned and began walking toward the side of the yard, toward the trees at the edge of the property. Elena followed him, her footsteps unsteady. She had no idea what she was walking into, but she couldn't stop now. The truth was just out of reach, and she needed to grasp it before it slipped away forever.

When they reached the old shed at the far end of the property, Jack paused and looked around. It was an old, decaying structure, forgotten by time. No one had used it in years. It seemed like the perfect place to hide, to speak freely without the weight of the past looming over them.

Jack pushed open the weathered door, and Elena followed him inside. The space smelled of damp wood and rot, but it was secluded—out of sight, away from the prying eyes of the house. He lit a small lantern that sat on a dusty table in the corner, and the room flickered to life.

"Sit," he said, gesturing to a pair of old chairs that had been left behind.

Elena sank into one of the chairs, her hands trembling in her lap. She didn't know what she was expecting, but it wasn't this. Her world had been turned upside down in a matter of hours, and now, sitting here in the dim light, she was waiting for Jack to finish what he had started.

He took the other chair across from her, his eyes intense, as if measuring her reaction. "I don't know how much you've pieced together already, but I'll start from the beginning. Your father, Robert, was always ambitious, but not in the way most people think. He wasn't just interested in money or power. No, it was something else—something older, something more dangerous."

Elena leaned forward, her heart pounding in her chest. "What do you mean? What was he after?"

Jack looked down, collecting his thoughts. "I don't know all the details, but I do know this: your father got involved with a secret society, one that dates back centuries. It's called *The Order of the Veil*. They've been manipulating history for generations, controlling events from behind the scenes. And they've always sought to maintain a bloodline of people—families that are *chosen*, that are meant to uphold their secrets and their power."

Elena's stomach churned. The words "secret society" felt like something straight out of a conspiracy theory, something that couldn't possibly be real. But the more Jack spoke, the more she realized how wrong she had been to dismiss it. She had no answers, no idea how deep this rabbit hole went, but she could feel the cold weight of something ancient pressing down on her.

"And my father," she said, her voice trembling. "He was a part of this Order? How? Why didn't I know?"

Jack's eyes darkened. "Because he wanted to protect you. But once you're in, there's no way out. Robert thought he could break free, try to protect you from all of this. But once they know you're involved, once they know you have the bloodline—well, that's when everything started to fall apart. That's why your mother left, why she tried to keep you away from all of it."

Elena shook her head. "My mother knew all of this? She never told me."

"She didn't want you to be a part of it," Jack said, his voice quiet. "She tried to protect you. She wanted you to have a normal life. But she couldn't protect you from everything. She couldn't protect you from *them*."

Elena's thoughts raced as the pieces began to fall into place. Her mother had tried to shield her from something she had never fully understood. And her father—her father had been involved in something dark, something that threatened to consume everything they had.

"What does this have to do with me?" Elena asked, her voice cracking. "Why does it matter now?"

Jack's gaze softened, but his expression remained grim. "Because you're the key, Elena. You always have been. They've been waiting for you to come into your own. And now that you've returned—now that you've found the journal—it's only a matter of time before they come for you."

Elena froze, her breath catching in her throat. "Who? Who's coming for me?"

Jack looked her in the eyes. "*The Order*. And they won't stop until they have what they want."
