With S.H.I.E.L.D. officially disbanded, there were still countless loose ends for Nick Fury to tie up. About a month later, once he had stabilized things on his end, Fury turned his attention back to HYDRA, determined not to let them make a comeback. The stakes were too high to ignore, and the past had taught him a bitter lesson.
"I'm going to send the Avengers to Sokovia," he said. "It's time to take down HYDRA's last stronghold once and for all."
On the list Thor had provided, Sokovia remained as HYDRA's final bastion, protected by the Mind Stone, which prevented S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Project Insight from tracking activity within the region. Fury knew that HYDRA's defenses there would be nearly impregnable—and that they possessed the power of the Mind Stone. This was beyond what S.H.I.E.L.D. could handle alone. The Avengers had to intervene.
However, when Fury approached Thor with his plan, he received an unexpected response.
"The time isn't right," Thor advised. "HYDRA is on high alert. If we attack now, they'll scatter, spreading chaos all over the world. Let them drop their guard. When they're comfortable, we strike—and none of them will escape."
In reality, Thor's reluctance was not just a tactic. He understood what HYDRA was trying to achieve in Sokovia. They were using the Mind Stone to conduct human experiments, hoping to create superhumans capable of rivaling the Avengers.
"Besides," Thor added quietly, "if we go in now, we risk losing two future Avengers—one of whom is stronger than me and Carol combined."
Fury listened, alarmed but convinced. He was aware of Captain Marvel's exploits, and he knew Thor's own feats, including decimating the Chitauri fleet. If Thor claimed that this future hero would surpass them, Fury couldn't imagine the power involved. For now, he decided to trust Thor's instincts.
In England, however, another problem loomed for Thor. Earlier that morning, Lady Sif had approached him with troubling news: Jane Foster had gone missing.
The previous night, Jane had detected a spatial anomaly near Stonehenge and had rushed to investigate. But after arriving, she had suddenly lost contact, and not even Heimdall could locate her—a rare and unsettling sign.
Thor, though somewhat aware of what this could mean, wasn't overly worried. He traveled to England and rented a room near Stonehenge, waiting patiently for Jane's return.
Meanwhile, in a dark, oppressive world, Jane Foster, now wielding Mjolnir as the Mighty Thor, cautiously advanced. Despite her newfound strength, her passions for astronomy and space science remained unchanged, which had led her here to investigate the disturbance.
Yet something felt terribly wrong. All her means of communication were dead, and the environment around her seemed boundless, trapping her with an eerie sense of dread. Her grip tightened on Mjolnir as she strained to catch every sound in the unnatural silence.
Ahead of her, she noticed a towering rune-carved stone split in two by a narrow gap. From within that gap, wisps of a crimson mist swirled and writhed like smoke.
Jane approached warily, her body tense.
In an instant, the red mist surged toward her, engulfing her before she could react. The force of it was overwhelming, and the mist penetrated her, sending a jolt through her body.
"Not good!" Jane thought, her heart racing. Whatever this mist was, it radiated malevolence. Before she could examine her body for any effects, her vision blurred, and she fell into unconsciousness.
In a barren, dead land devoid of life or sound, a massive ship materialized, looming over the desolate landscape. This was Svartalfheim, once the dark realm of the Dark Elves in the Nine Realms. Centuries ago, Odin's father, Bor, had led Asgardian forces to defeat the Dark Elves, leaving this world a wasteland.
Inside the ship, a pale figure stirred, his sunken eyes opening slowly. He is Malekith, the King of the Dark Elves.
Malekith's withered lips parted as he spoke in a hoarse, menacing voice. "The Aether has awakened us. The Convergence of the realms is nearing. This time, we will reclaim the Aether, restore our former glory, and plunge the universe into darkness once more."
He glared into the vastness of his ship's chamber, his voice rising with conviction. "Asgard has known peace for too long. This time, their end is upon them."
