Chapter 27 - Fairy Spies

Outside, Leah, Emily, and Enna emerged to find that a crowd had formed near the gate and the gate was wide open, so they went to investigate.

"What's going on here?" asked Leah in a commanding tone.

"Someone said she saw a fairy over there." responded an amazon from the crowd.

Emily and Enna stiffened a bit, but Leah maintained her composure.

"Emily, Enna, go investigate." said Leah "If there is a fairy here, see what she wants with us."

"Yes, ma'am." said Emily.

Emily and Enna went out into the woods, and Leah told the crowd to disperse.

"It's been a while since I've seen a fairy." said a member of the crowd as she walked away.

"I wonder if they're planning another prank," said another.

"They better not fill the baths with dirt again, that one was just mean." said another.

Leah returned to her original purpose: to try and suss out what kind of opposition she would face if the tribe found out she was married and harboring her husband in the village.

Once Emily and Enna were far enough from the village, Lily and Iris came out of hiding to speak with them.

"What's taking so long?" asked Lily, as she and Iris landed in front of them.

Emily explained what they had done in the amazon village so far, omitting most of the sex. Then she explained that they are trying to figure out how to get the amazons to accept Titus living among them.

"Can we help?" asked Iris

"You can be our spies." said Enna, putting the things she recently learned about fairies to use.

"What are spies?" asked Lily, her interest piqued.

"A spy is someone who gathers information, secretly."

"Cool! We can do that." said Lily

"Okay, keep an eye on the amazons and let us know if anything strange happens."

"Send us some kind of signal if you want to meet again." added Emily

With that, Emily and Enna returned to the amazon village. They told anyone who asked that they didn't find any fairies.

Meanwhile, Leah was observing the amazons in the training area, standing beside one of the instructors. The amazons were throwing javelins, hitting posts with wooden swords, and practicing hand-to-hand combat.

"Come to observe the training?" asked the amazon instructor.

"Do you think any of them could beat me, now?" Leah asked the instructor.

"Hmm. . . Maybe Alex could. She is kind of dumb, but she has great instincts." said the instructor. "Plus, she's so big, I think it would be a tough fight for you."

"Do you know of anyone who might want to take my place as chief?"

"Are you thinking of retiring? As far as I know, most of us are happy with you as our chief."

"No, I was just thinking it has been a long time since anyone challenged me."

"I see. Well, since you've been doing a good job and most of us know how strong you are, I don't think many of us would be interested in challenging you. If anyone does, it'll be out of stupidity or excess ambition."

"I understand." said Leah, as she was leaving.
