Chapter 11 - Chapter Eleven: True Culinary Skills

"You made this?"

Melissa's movements paused in midair as she removed her hat, her gaze at Klein filled with astonishment.

She took another sniff, letting the aroma waft into her nose, and her expression softened, as though she'd found some reassurance in the delicious smell.

"Did you really make this?" she asked again, her tone filled with genuine doubt.

Klein couldn't help but smile, feeling a rare sense of accomplishment from her reaction.

"Yes, I did. It's a… surprise. Thought it was time you had a proper meal after all the instant dishes we usually put together," he replied, trying to sound casual while stirring the stew in the pot to hide his own hint of pride.

Melissa seemed hesitant, caught between disbelief and growing anticipation.

"Are you worried I'll waste the lamb?" Klein asked with a smile, and before she could respond, he added, "Relax, I specifically asked Welch how to make this dish — you know, he has a great cook."

"First time making it?" Melissa's brow furrowed slightly but was quickly soothed by the enticing aroma.

"Looks like I have a talent for it," Klein chuckled. "It's almost ready. Why don't you put your books and hat down, wash up in the restroom, and get ready to try it? I'm confident you'll like it."

Hearing her brother's calm, steady instructions and seeing his gentle smile, Melissa stood in the doorway, stunned and momentarily lost in thought.

"Do you like it cooked until it's really tender?" Klein asked with a grin, nudging her.

"Ah, yes, okay!" Melissa snapped out of it, grabbing her bag and hat, hurrying into the other room.

Klein lifted the lid of the stew pot, letting a burst of steam rise. He had placed two slices of rye bread near the lamb and peas, allowing them to absorb the aroma and warmth, softening perfectly.

By the time Melissa had put away her things and washed up, a plate of tender lamb stew with peas, potatoes, carrots, and onions was waiting on the table. Next to it, the two slices of rye bread were lightly stained with a hint of the stew's rich broth.

"Here, try it," Klein gestured to the wooden fork and spoon placed by the plate.

Still somewhat dazed, Melissa didn't hesitate long before picking up the fork. She speared a piece of potato, bringing it to her mouth and taking a small bite.

The soft, slightly sweet potato and the rich, savory flavor of the meat's juices spread throughout her mouth, making her saliva flow freely. In just a few bites, she had polished off the piece of potato.

"Try the meat," Klein said, gesturing toward the plate with his chin.

He had already sampled the stew and thought it was just passable, but for a girl who rarely got to eat meat, it would be plenty satisfying.

Melissa's eyes sparkled with anticipation as she carefully forked a piece of lamb.

The meat was so tender that it practically melted in her mouth, releasing a burst of flavor that filled her senses.

The taste was an unparalleled experience, so captivating that she couldn't stop herself.

By the time she regained her composure, she had eaten several pieces of lamb.

"I… I… Klein, this was meant for you…" Melissa's face flushed red, and she stammered, flustered.

"I've already snuck some bites. It's a chef's privilege," Klein reassured his sister with a smile as he also picked up his fork and spoon, alternating between bites of lamb, peas, and a piece of rye bread soaked in the stew's juices.

Melissa relaxed, influenced by Klein's calm demeanor, and continued to savor the delicious meal.

"It's really good. I never would have guessed this was your first time making it," Melissa said, looking at the empty plate with genuine admiration.

"This is still miles from Welch's chef's level. When I start making some money, I'll take you and Benson to a restaurant to enjoy something even better!" Klein found himself looking forward to the idea.

"Your interview will…" Melissa began, only to be cut off by an involuntary hiccup of contentment.

Flustered, she quickly covered her mouth, her face full of embarrassment.

It was all that delicious lamb and pea stew's fault!

Klein chuckled silently, deciding not to tease his sister. Instead, he pointed to the plate. "Your turn to clean up."

"On it!" Melissa eagerly stood up, picking up the plate and heading to the kitchen.

When she returned from washing up, she instinctively checked the spice jars and cooking items in the cupboard.

"Did you use these?" she asked in surprise, holding up the black pepper jar and lard tin.

Klein spread his hands and smiled, "Just a little. It's the price of good flavor."

Melissa's gaze flickered, her expression shifting a few times before she finally pursed her lips and said, "From now on, maybe I should do the cooking."

"Mm... But you should focus on your studies and prepare for your interview. You've got to think about your career."
